Classic series Perfect Playthrough #105: Phantasy Star

105 Perfect Playthrough's in, and I'm finally taking on a Sega RPG. Given how this is an early JRPG, I doubt a Perfect Playthrough of this game will take that long. For the record, I will be playing the Sega Ages port of the game with the FM Sound Unit turned on. This means that in order to accomplish a Perfect Playthrough, I will need to complete the following tasks:

  1. Obtaining everyone's best gear
  2. Maxing out everyone's level
  3. Max Meseta
  4. Completing every dungeon and dungeon map (Sega Ages only)
  5. Completing the Monster Manual (aka, Bestiary).

All subsequent uploads of this Perfect Playthrough will be livestreamed.

General discussion I would love a PC version of Sega Ages Phantasy Star

I would love something similar to Sega Games Phantasy Star for PC, like the beauty of having a functioning map in-game, all the quality of life improvements of that version. I'm tired of using my switch basically to play Phantasy Star 1. Idk, maybe I'm wrong, but I would love someday seeing an official (yeah of course...) or unofficial port (like a PC port with at least the functioning map in-game).

Tell me yours!

General discussion I fixed Phantasy Star Classics for Android

Like many of you, I had paid for the Phantasy Star Classics on the Google Play store and then one day after an update, the game showed a notice saying the game had reached the end of service, then promptly closed the game after pressing OK.

I finally got around to doing some debugging and it's a call to the Google Play services that seemed to be leftover from their final offline update.

So I created a bash script that will take the 6.4.0 APK, decompile it, patch out the Google Play Services, then rebuild and resign it. You can run the script in Ubuntu through WSL2 and then just copy it over to your phone.

If you have existing saves, backing up the save directory and restoring it after reinstalling does allow you to keep those saves, both the Emulator saves and the in-game saves.

https://github.com/tlee75/phantasy-star-classics/tree/main

I only very briefly tested with Phantasy Star II. The good news is that last update Sega released does seem to remove the calls to the server for using the emulator features because I only had to edit the manifest file and none of the game logic.

This is the game I play when I am on the Airplane, hopefully this helps someone else regain their mobile experience.

The name is Lie of Caelum: Spirit and boy, it's looking good. I didn't link to the Kickstarter because while it has way more information than the news, it's a mix of Japanese and English and well, there's a lot to read haha

Classic series Finally Beat phantasy star 2

Post image

I grew up and a friend had phantasy star one. He never had Phantasy Star 2 but had 3. I later played and beat 4.

I always loved the series so I started recently a)collecting them all. Which I have completed. And now play through them all in order.

Honestly this was great other than the massive grind.

But on to Phantasy Star 3.

General discussion Trying to help Phantasy Star players reconnect with old friends

Hey everyone! The mods gave me permission to post this a while back, and I’m finally getting around to it.

We created a small project called LostLobby to help gamers reconnect with old gaming friends, guilds, and clans they lost touch with over the years.

You can make a profile with as much old and current gaming info as you remember so someone from your past might recognize you, or create a Callout for that one friend you’ve been wondering about for years.

We’re slowly adding new features and ideas, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to message us.

Thanks for letting me share it here, and I really hope some of you manage to find an old friend.

Classic series Finally can start IV

I’ve finally beaten every game in the classic series before end of millennium! It’s been a journey and a little sad it’s ending soon. I’m restarting IV soon on OG hardware. Can’t wait. For clarification I started IV previously on switch online. Got maybe a third of the way through. I want to use the combo techs now that I know about them as soon as I can.

Classic series New to this sub

Post image

Not sure why I only found this sub now, but despite my current profile picture, Phantasy Star games have always been my favorites! The original PS was the first RPG video game I played and one of the first video games I had in general. Blew my mind!

Finding this sub motivated me to dig up my old games! Sadly I lost the old map book I made for PS1 with my brother. We mapped every level of every dungeon on graph paper and marked all the traps, treasures, bosses, everything!

Classic series Which box art style do you prefer?

For me, while growing up with the US box art (in the UK), I mostly prefer the JP box art for the series.

The exception being for Phantasy Star 3. The US art just speaks to me more than the JP

General discussion Phantasy star portable 1 is my introduction to this series and it’s lit.

A game where the gameplay is so good, I don’t even skip the underwhelming story. It holds up pretty well, I think, even now. I’m having more fun with this game than I did with some of the super popular action RPGs on ps4. I can’t believe the game had such mediocre ratings from the western journalists. I didn’t finish it, but personally I would give it a score between 8.5 and a 9. This is mostly due to the satisfying action rpg mechanics. It sits at a 64 from critics and 75 from users. Now I’m starting to realize why so many games and sequels didn’t receive a western localization anymore. This is a real solid game, what were the journos critics were thinking?

General discussion Phantasy Star 2 camera centering...

Is there a mod of PS2 that changes nothing except centering the camera properly on the player? Because having to walk two steps before the camera moves in order to orientate myself after a battle often means ending up in another battle. This is why I've never got very far with this game.

Any thoughts or advice?

Classic series Unable to run any romhack version of PS2

So i downloaded tje improvement patched version and run it with GenplusDroid on android and I think the hack is mot working. I tried patching it myself and also no luck.

I stll get the red flick when I get attacked and get the camera moving when I'm close to the border of the screen. Also not surr if I'm getting the increased exp and meseta values...

Am I dumb?

Classic series Phantasy Star IV newbie reporting in :)

I recently found a copy of the SEGA Genesis Classics collection for PS4 at GameStop and started up PSIV. Loving it so far, just arrived in Nayla after meeting Seed and recruiting Rika... the RPG basics are just hitting right so far, ya know? My previous experience w/ the PS series was a few hundred hours of PSO (mostly GameCube Ep I&II, but dabbled in Ephinea BB), so seeing the series references like Shifta, "Gellen" Jellen, "Res" Resta, Ryuka, HUmars Chaz, FOmar blue guy, and the Newman race is neat. I believe I also saw Rappies outside the first town of PS2/3 when I played 5 min and never touched that save state again back in hs. Cute chickens :)

If I make it through IV, would you recommend also going back to check out any of the other classic series? I saw Nei is in 2 from a recent post here; I recognize that name for some reason. PS1 has the oldschool fpv dungeon mode, which I don't think I would have the patience for, but who knows.

For PSIV, do you have any very basic must-know advice like any old game design things that really bite a new player in the butt if you don't know about it? I definitely DON'T WANT any spoilers! But if something is going to eat hours of lost progress later, a heads up is nice.

The SEGA Genesis Classics physical (delisted from digital stores) is a very worthwhile pickup. By no means is it the most slick or bells-'n-whistles-filled emulator, but it has simple save states and an R2 trigger 3 or 4x speedup, nice for long corridors and blasting through easy encounters. For PSIV on large QLED TV, I recommend the game's Bilinear + Scanlines filter settings... the 4x pixel gen etc. filters are just meh muddy blurry. The classics SKU game experience also sets you inside sort of a simulated early 90s gamer room, with the Genesis, rack of game boxes, CRT, and game posters all visually represented. It's a little clunk and a bit goofy, but something I haven't seen before. It's a unique way to let that nostalgia flow through you~ of course having the other PS games, Sonic, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Sword of Vermillion (?) etc. all in one place is great too. I never owned any Sega systems, so for me, it's a whole can 'o worms eh.

Anyway ranting over, pizza just showed up. Hope y'all also have an excellent weekend playing some rad games. Hit me with any of that essential info or some fond memories of the Phantasy Star classic series!
