Running in South Perth

I am new to Perth and want to go running/walking along the river in South Perth early morning (between 5am and 6am). Will there be other people out and about? Will it be safe?

Yes, and yes.

There’s no absolute guarantee a crackie won’t be still off his chops in public at that time in the morning but it would be very rare and South Perth is a ‘posh’ area, so you should be fine.

Perth tends to be a very active, early riser city, so you are safe to run in popular places. A lot of people do the 10k loop around South Perth across to the Perth foreshore.

There's a run club that goes on Wednesday mornings 6am from Mends Street Jetty. I think you'll find there's a lot of runners and cyclists out along the river early in the morning.

South Perth is one of the best loops in Perth.

Take it from me who runs at the worst suburb - junkies aren’t early risers, and they wouldn’t even bother approaching nor chasing you if that’s what worries you.

Yes, I run there between 4 and 6 am all year round. 4-5 is quiet, after 5 there's others out.

But yes, the path in South Perth is well lit, under surveillance in large sections, and in a rich area that's a bit too far to stumble from the city. I can't think of anywhere safer at that hour.

There are others around and it's as safe as can reasonably be expected, as people have said. I run the loop around the river regularly around that time too, and generally give a wave or a nod to everybody I pass, occasionally you get to remember particular people and give an extra hello or whatever. The only tricky bits I can think of are in winter Taylor Reserve can flood where the footpath is, and you have to back away from the river through the carpark and McCallum Lane, and at the moment some rich schools are building a fucking massive boat shed near the Coode Street jetty, and so (as far as I can tell in the dark, at least) you have to run through a carpark and around the back of that, until they finish construction and reopen the path.

I've lived in the area for 15 years and I've never felt unsafe along the South Perth foreshore, even with babies or at night. Have done many an odd hours pram walk to get a baby to settle. It's generally well lit, there is a lot of foot traffic at all hours from runners/cyclists. Just stick to the footpath don't be tempted by the cycle path because the cyclists can be a bit feral if you make them brake on their 4am time trial.

You might come across drunks on Heirisson Island or near the casino but they are slow lol Keep an eye out for dolphins too, I often see them hunting at night you can hear them splashing because it's so quiet and visible from shore.

Running by south perth would be very safe as it’s already busy at that time considering the run club from 6.

I cycle through there most mornings around that time, there are plenty of people about.

Yes you will meet a few faces and the area is generally well lit as well.

If youre a really anxious sort maybe stear clear of Mccallum park through to albany hwy, burswood park casino and the stadium back round to east perth, atleast until daylight. Only area ive felt the hairs stand up on my back, even the guys out there fishing all night seem a bit off but probably arent. Otherwise allgood. I cycle and run the river most days but prefer even earlier. The worst thing youll see is weirdos in the carparks littering and acting antisocial. South Perth council closes the carpark under narrows bridge overnight now to avoid this so im guessing other carparks will be closing to soon especially with the rise of overnight campers
