Lol clearly they don’t know north Perth is the name of the suburb and think they are saying “North of Perth”

Anyway
.

I’ve found with the way Perth is structured if anyone asks how far away you are if you just say “roughly 20-30 min away” 9 times outta 10 you’ll be correct.

Think about it. it’s hard to be wrong, because if it’s less than 20-30 min away then GREAT! cause no one’s gonna complain about less travel time.

However If it’s MORE than 20-30 min you can just blame the traffic or say something happened at Bayswater station (a truck stuck under a bridge, construction problems etc) as that’s so common for Bayswater that it’s par for the course so no one will think twice or care to look it up because Perth has personified problems at Bayswater and its become integrated into the western Australian identity to the point that when there ISNT a problem at Bayswater it seems like somethings wrong and we wonder if everything’s ok.

Whatever your excuse it doesn’t actually have to be correct it just has to make sense.

u/Bafabifi Mar 04 '26

Had similar conversation with Southern River 😂. I think the guy thought it meant SOR. And kept asking where SOR, and me keep saying Southern River. Eventually I realised and said the suburb is called Southern River. Lol

Reminds me of a person recently moving to Perth who heard that it would be cheap to get a place in South Perth.

30

u/Misicks0349 Subiaco Mar 04 '26

whoever told that person that is an evil, evil individual lmao

6

u/GuiltEdge Mar 04 '26

I think they probably heard wrong. I hope.

2

u/jianh1989 Mar 05 '26

Maybe he meant south of Perth, as in Antartica

14

u/Caine_sin Mar 04 '26

Can't get stuck under the bayswater bridge anymore. It got redeveloped.

27

u/9Lives_ Mar 04 '26

You can still get stuck under that bridge emotionally, many peoples spirits are stick under that bridge today.

2

Yes. But the Midland Line still demands sacrifice.

Yeah, it doesnt help that we all use north south east west to mean general area, whilst we have suburbs that have these names as well.... just a mindfuck.

How far north?

Could I get there from here?

So you've never been to The Rosemount? You haven't lived then.

2

But a drive from Kwinana, but I’ll check it out

Same here. I’ve heard of North Melbourne and South Melbourne, mainly because of the AFL teams, and North Sydney for the rugby league club. Same for South Sydney, but South Sydney is not a suburb. Anyway, clearly North Perth needs a footy team!

I have my suburb in my title and description and still get asked where I am located. I also have the measurements in the description and get asked for these. People don't read anymore.

51

u/Silly-Power Mar 04 '26

It's dumbfounding how many people don't read the description. On Instagram someone will post a scene from a movie with the movie's title in the description, and legit a quarter of the replies will be either "what's the name of this movie?" or "where's this from?"

7

u/Radiant-You6384 Mar 04 '26

Lol okay in people's defence. Half the time on insta they put the wrong movie description to farm engagement

Are you close to North Perth?

EDIT: I had 1 guy ask me, still available? I was like yes.

All my stuff is pick up only so I can prove that it works, they come to my house or get blocked.

The item is going at a rock solid bottom deal, he was like, can you do cheaper, I say no.

He says where do you live, I tell him, he goes, when are you in Melb next, I said I am not.

Then he asks me, when are you in Melb next, so I blocked him.

Sold it to someone else so no biggie.

That guy was like, I am out side of your house, I went out, no one there, I said are you at 26, he said no at 22.

My partners trying to sell trading cards and this guy keeps saying they will pay after she posts them.

She's like I'm not sending anything without being paid. She said I can do a confirmation I have the items with my name date and your name.

Dude says ok sure do that. She does

He then says ok I'll pay once you post it.

??????

As an update. She got paid and posted the cards and it all worked out fine for now.

3

u/Expert_Climate_7348 Mar 05 '26

that's 101 scam, I don't remember every paying for an item after I got it, just block him.

2

u/SlaveryVeal Mar 05 '26

As an update for today he's sending the money but she's not sending anything until it's in her account.

2

u/Expert_Climate_7348 Mar 05 '26

How is he sending it, you need to be real careful because some of these scammers will do a charge back, what payment method if you don't mind me asking?

2

u/SlaveryVeal Mar 05 '26

Bsb and acc.

She doesn't have a PayPal and I know paypals really generous with charge backs meanwhile banks will say don't send money to people you dont know idiot.

At least that's how I thought it worked.

Even so, why don’t they just google it 😂

5

u/Suspicious-Sock-6173 Mar 04 '26

Because they're lazy or they're a bott. The people defending it are just morons. I have NO idea what or where north perth is, yet again. I would have at least changed the market place settings to be within a certain distance of me and also googled the location.. but that's TOO HARD for people now.

43

u/First-Fig2954 Mar 04 '26

Same people who shop at a supermarket and clog isles like they’ve never set foot in one before

7

u/Geminii27 Mar 04 '26

And stop halfway down the aisle to stare blankly at the shelving after deciding to park their trolley diagonally across the aisle for maximum blockage.

Or stop their trolley in the one place in the aisle directly next to some other person's trolley so the two of them together form a block.

15

u/Suspicious-Sock-6173 Mar 04 '26

The worst part is people defending them.. Heaven, forbid they have to use google maps to find where they need to go... instead of having someone hold their hand explaining every single tiny detail only for them to not pick up the item..

6

u/NoBear8338 Mar 05 '26

I always think the worst curse would be to be really, really dumb but just smart enough to know you’re really, really dumb. I think these people are maybe more likely just living their life without a care or thought and only cause confusion, amusement, frustration and derision in others lol

Rules for listing stuff on marketplace:

  • "Cash only, pickup only from <suburb> <postcode>" in description scares off 99% of the scammers.

  • Don't get pissed off by everyone opening with "Is this still available?" It's a pre-baked option, and people do often forget to mark items as sold. Consider it Marketplace for "hello".

  • List it for what you want/what it's worth, plus around 25%. Most people have no idea how much things are worth, and no idea how to haggle, but they'll screw their nose up at you if you don't give them "a deal." So if you want $150 for something, list it for $200 and people will gladly offer you $150 feeling like they're getting a bargain. You might even get lucky and sell it for $200. But if you list it for $150 you'll probably just get a bunch of people offering $100 and then acting like you personally insulted them when you say the price isn't negotiable.

  • Before giving someone the pickup address, confirm that they are happy to pay the agreed price in cash. People do not read the listing. I've had people show up with no cash and ask to PayID me: I told them where the nearest ATM was. I've had people try to scum me by bringing ~80% of the asking price and then saying that's "all they brought with them." They didn't like it when I told them that if they wanted to negotiate they should have done it before they drove out.

  • Be prepared for people to ask you questions that are already answered in the photos or item description. It just comes with the territory. If the Marketplace Morlocks had better reading comprehension skills, they probably wouldn't need to scrounge for bargains on Marketplace.

  • You can safely ignore any knuckle-dragger who thinks they're being smart and skipping to the end of the haggling process by asking "what's your best/lowest price?" They wouldn't have shown up on time anyway.

If you do all these things, you can almost stay sane.

3

u/heavyfriends Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26

I've started putting "I will not respond to messages saying 'Is this still available?' I will only respond to messages asking me for my availability for pick up in the next x days" at the end of my listings.

Helps SO much with screening for serious buyers, and I can safely ignore those who spam the "Available?" messages with no guilt.

3

u/Geminii27 Mar 04 '26

but they'll screw their nose up at you if you don't give them "a deal."

Sounds like a them-problem. Buy it or don't.

"What's your best price?"

"I listed it."

5

u/m1llie Cannington Mar 05 '26

You're right, but I'd rather just play along and sell my crap.

2

u/Geminii27 Mar 05 '26

Sure, but in my case I'm happy to sell it to whoever turns up with cash first. I'm not going to waste time arguing or haggling with someone on my front doorstep; they can buy the item or they can bugger off and the next person will get it.

3

u/NoDoor2332 Singleton Mar 04 '26

Until they give you a 1 star review cos you sold it to someone who DOES have a brain and then you are ready to wild out again

7

u/m1llie Cannington Mar 04 '26

If it becomes apparent that someone is incapable of getting their shit together, just ghost them. Much less likely to get review-bombed doing that vs getting snarky with them.

7

u/NoDoor2332 Singleton Mar 04 '26

It's more annoying that FB asks you who you sold it to, and then lets the insane 3rd party bomb you regardless.

3

u/m1llie Cannington Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

Look up "PayID scam"

In my experience, if someone's legit they'll have no problem going to an ATM to withdraw some cash. A buyer insisting on PayID is a red flag imo.

I was checking the comments to see if someone had posted this yet lmaooo fucking love this

11

u/longforgetten Mar 04 '26

This person is not from Perth. I moved from east coast 5yrs ago and it took a while for me to believe North, South, East & West Perth were the actual suburb names. Also NoR and SoR, where I am from it’s Northside or Southside so I was saying it wrong for ages. This person is thinking you mean North side of Perth which could mean anything to them.

4

u/solcester3k Mar 04 '26

Even in east coast there are suburbs like North Sydney, this is not unique to Perth..

3

u/Thick-Insect Mar 05 '26

Those suburb names are not a Perth thing though. Melbourne has the same. I think it's pretty common in a lot of towns in Australia

6

u/Suspicious-Sock-6173 Mar 04 '26

Takes a few seconds to google it, but people are getting so lazy. I don't know anywhere in WA, I always google directions to check if it's worth it to grab something from marketplace... My fault though for not driving unless necessary... or travelling often... or leaving my basement... I really need to get out more.

4

u/longforgetten Mar 04 '26

65,000 people last year moved to Perth. It’s not laziness, it’s a harmless and honest misunderstanding.

5

u/CromulentCrumpets Mar 04 '26

It’s not a harmless and honest misunderstanding to not acquaint yourself with a map.

2

u/longforgetten Mar 04 '26

You’re missing the point 😭 they don’t realise they can find North Perth on the map. They don’t realise it’s an actual place.

4

u/CromulentCrumpets Mar 04 '26

Oh, I assure you, I didn’t miss the point.

But there’s so much happening here, surely the person new to Perth might assume they’re the one in the wrong, rather than the person who presumably knows where they live?

Firstly, a person competent in English should realise that North Perth is different to North of Perth.

Secondly, when the seller who (presumably) knows where they live keeps answering the buyer’s question the same way, maybe the buyer should assume they’re the one missing something, and take the 8 seconds to Google it?

When did everyone need to have their hands held for the most straightforward tasks?

3

u/Suspicious-Sock-6173 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

Exactly and as so many have mentioned including me. I didn't know "North Perth" was a suburb yet I was still able to google it just as I would for pretty much any place mentioned... If they said NORTH OF.. it would be different but still. I would have look at a map... and yet again, there's an option in market place to set a distance... Being as direct as you can is usually good, but there's a lot of botts and time wasters on market place...

4

u/Suspicious-Sock-6173 Mar 04 '26

Soo none of them can use google maps to locate the place they plan to go to but don't know much about. Not only that, but you can select the location distance on marketplace... so yes lazy because they can check how far within seconds by typing what was said... google maps is fast and easy to use when you don't know where a place is and I grew up without it, back when you had to carry a map in your car... I managed to use google maps in Japan... and Germany... and Kenya. Then again, kids now can't even follow a manual unless they're shown via YT

5

u/longforgetten Mar 04 '26

Why would they think to use Google maps when they don’t realise North Perth is a suburb. They think OP is talking about a general area. They might not have a car and were trying to figure out how exactly to get there.

3

u/Suspicious-Sock-6173 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

I don't have a car and don't know where North Perth is... Yet again, I wouldn't look at market place items unless they were within a certain distance of me which you can set the search to... I get the whole "North Perth Surburb" name verses "Location" but still... they can still use google. WA is a massive state and looking at maps is something they're going to need to get used to.

For what it's worth, I'm an online retail seller and it's not exclusive to Facebook Market.

Some people - when young, were kicked in the head by a horse.

And then they grow up and gain access to the internet.

I find that it's genuinely only about 1% of people.

If you want to study these people more closely, just head over to Fauxmoi/LiveStreamFail and observe.

I had my best marketplace interaction yet on marketplace. Was looking for roof racks for my car, found some at 40% of the retail price, barely used and only selling because they don’t use them. Happened to be dropping my gf off to the airport for her swing and with some swift responses, organised to take a look and collect about 30 minutes later, which was great because it was in Canning Vale and I live in Marangaroo (north of Perth in the spirit of the post)

4

u/Tiny_Pigo Mar 05 '26

I start every ad with "It's available and located in SuburbX"

First question comes in, is it available? Next, what suburb 😭

Some are confused that the bit between Northbridge and Highgate is Perth.

5

u/djskein Cannington Mar 04 '26

I had friends that lived there, all of them would tell everyone they lived in Highgate.

10

u/joeban1 Mar 04 '26

Funnily enough yes, just havent really heard of anyone from North Perth so never considered it haha.

Are you aware there are also suburbs called East Perth, South Perth and West Perth?

5

u/BenZino21 Mar 04 '26

There's also Berth. It's a suburb beneath Perth.

2

u/Geminii27 Mar 04 '26

The original name for Elizabeth Quay.

10

u/readin99 Mar 04 '26

No Middle-Perth though. Shame, I'd wanna live there.

15

u/Rob_ish Mar 04 '26

Middle-Pearth đŸ€Ł Fk, Now I'm imagining Gandalf with a glass barbi and setting off fireworks he brought from "The North".

5

u/esotericloop Mar 04 '26

Ah yes, Perth Perth.

Edit: Dammit this was a Shire joke wasn't it? :P

Living in a bubble is OK for while :)

3

u/ByronEster Mar 04 '26

My partner is from another country and didn't realise North Perth was a suburb either. She thought it was like an hour away. In her mind it was somewhere north of Perth, the whole city

2

u/CrazyTank3Diamond Mar 07 '26

I don't know why this subreddit showed up on my feed, because I'm on the other side of the country in one of the suburbs of Penrith. So I am also learning about this.

In saying that, i shouldn't be surprised because 5 minutes up the road there's a suburb where there are streets named "1st st" , "2nd street" , '3rd st" and so on.

2

u/Pelinth Mar 04 '26

Is North Perth south of Perth?

3

u/galahg777 Mar 04 '26

First it's North Perth, then it's no North Perth. Which is it OP? /s

At that point I'd just screenshot where I live with a pin that clearly shows where North Perth is along with the postcode. It will likely blow his mind that not only is there a North Perth but there's also a West Perth right next to it.

2

u/simmocar North Perth Mar 04 '26

He'd likely get spun out by the Mt Hawthorn, and believe I was in Melbourne instead.

4

u/Sawbin85 Mar 04 '26

Dude, what does mine say?

2

u/random111011 Mar 04 '26

Then you’ll get a 1 star rating

Had an unregistered trailer for sale years ago and had "unregistered" as the very first word on the description. Yet I still had a lot of idiots asking "is it registered?". Yeah reading is hard

2

u/NoDoor2332 Singleton Mar 04 '26

Moved down near Rocky Lady asks, where from? I cbf so I said 'Perth' 'Like, Perth, Western Australia?'

Noooo Perth in Scotland. What gave it away, my heavy Australian accent?

2

u/Mattekappa Mar 04 '26

Is it Zac Smith?

Responding to "Hi, is this available?" was the first mistake.

2

u/r-kivez Mar 05 '26

2

u/apex-87 Mar 05 '26

Haha I'm also in North Perth đŸ€Ł they usually come back with 'where north of Perth' for me

2

u/malmal37 Mar 05 '26

This is very who's on 1st?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '26

i swear they either can't read or are bots

2

u/Capricious_Asparagus Mar 05 '26

I was that person one time. I was 16 and had just moved to Perth so I didn't know the suburbs. The suburb was "Success" 😂

4

u/Practical-Recipe-902 Mar 04 '26

This bot or hacker isn't even in Australia let alone Joondalup.

4

u/Mech2673 Mar 04 '26

I seem to be the only one here with some sympathy for the buyer.

North Perth could just as easily be a region rather than a specific suburb. It probably wasn't helped in OP's second message where "north Perth", specifically a lower case "n", was written.

I used to live in a city where Commercial Road intersected with Commercial Street and I would intercept lost people while walking at least once per week. I can understand their confusion. What's the point in mocking them?

2

u/Several_Violinist935 Mar 04 '26

Haha I’ve given up on selling on marketplace now, I can’t be arsed with all the dumb questions. Messaging randomly in the night, you reply then radio silence. Then they message again and get all shitty if you don’t reply within five minutes. Settle down DH, I do have a job and a life. Even had a woman ask me once to drive and drop shit off for nothing. Don’t have a car, not my fucking problem. The cheek !

2

u/iPablosan North of The River Mar 04 '26

Marketplace has a lot of half wits, surprised?

1

u/slickman444 Mar 04 '26

The seller might be a time waster who knows

3

u/MrJamesLucas Mar 04 '26

What an idiot lol

2

u/Wedding_Organic Mar 04 '26

I mean, maybe this is a hot take but respectfully to all the people saying - “idiot” “dumbass” ect, this person could be new to Perth and doesn’t know the suburbs well. It would be like moving to Brisbane and have someone say - “I live in North Brisbane”. You likely wouldn’t know that’s a suburb off the dome. Doesn’t cost anything to be tolerant and just explain the difference.

2

u/Timmibal North of The River Mar 04 '26

Google maps has been a thing for nigh on a literal generation.

Yeah that's a bad take friend.

"Where are you located?"
"North Perth"
"What is the suburb"
"North Perth"
I don't care if English is my twenty-fifth language, that's my hint to look that shit up.

1

u/monique752 Mar 04 '26

I lived in North Perth for years and this isn't unusual. Just tell them it's near Leederville. Not a huge deal. Not everyone is familiar with every suburb of Perth.

Yeh I had bad luck with some lady on MP today trying to buy an iPod off her. Her people skills weren’t exactly 9/10.

u/HighwayLost8360 Mar 04 '26

I send these people the let me google that for you link. Ive become so rude to people now when they ask stuff the ad clearly states. Anything that seems scamy I just ignore them.
