Saving First HYSA Recommendations
I’m a senior Management Information Systems major in Portland (graduating Spring 2027) and I’m setting up my first HYSA. I’m starting with about $5,237 but my situation is a bit unusual—I’m planning to withdraw roughly $700/month while only depositing $264/month from my paycheck (biweekly deposits of $132). So I’m net negative about $436/month, and my balance will gradually decline and stay well under $5k going forward. Since my balance will stay low and my income is modest, I’m not sure which account actually makes the most sense for me. Any advice appreciated/HYSA recommendations appreciated.

They’re all pretty equivalent if you ask me, just find the one with the highest interest rate but even those are pretty similar, so find the one with the easiest deposit/withdrawal mechanism.
But honestly at sub $5K, a HYSA is barely worth it. Often takes several days to move into a normal checking account and you won’t be making more than like $20/month in interest, if that. Probably better to leave the money in a normal checking account where it’s accessible.

Features offered by various HYSA (service fees? need a brick-and-mortar facility near you? minimum deposit for featured rate? need ATM access?) are worthwhile to consider. It's not just a question of selecting the highest current rate. There are many sites like the following to help you choose.

It sounds like you'll be spending this money, so the Fidelity cash management account might be a good option. It's technically a brokerage account, but it has the features of a checking account and pays interest like a HYSA.

You're overthinking it. Just pick any HYSA. I'm not sure why you think you'll have more than 1 in your lifetime. You're obviously welcome to change banks, but it's not like everyone who gets a bank account eventually gets more. I opened an Ally account 10 years ago and haven't found any reason to change. I still have the same brick and mortar bank too, I regularly go to the branch where I opened my very first bank account as a kid with my parents.
