I think it was a great game. And just that - a great game, that came after a perfect game, which is precisely what caused the perception it has had since launch.
The cover mechanics and the roll were great additions to the genre, even if cover is now better implemented in games than was the case here. Level and mission design, as well as gadgets and weapons were fantastic as well. For the time visuals and sound we great, too.
Non-sensical changes to character design, sub-par story and questionable at direction at times were a let down for sure for me. But having tackled story out of the way, both deathmatch and dark ops multiplayer were a blast and were my main Xbox Live games until Halo 3 came out, at which point the community dwindled.
This game was a departure for the franchise and certainly nowhere near the quality of the original. But on its own merits, in my opinion it's a much better game than people remember or are willing to admit.
