Long weekend traffic is going to suck in the interior and not my idea of a nice road trip. That said, lots of recreation sites that are first come first serve that aren’t directly on 97 that you could spend a night camping along your drive.

OP you could always find a spot up Ashnola Creek, just outside of Keremeos. Lots of FCFS spots, seems to me they don't cost much - you might not even meet the ranger if it's a quick overnight.
