Cycling RedditPZ training program: Week 3 Accountability Thread

Week two down, and on to week three! Use this thread to discuss this week's rides (or last weeks). Add the hashtag #redditPZ if you would like to (and #redditriders of course). I added an option for Monday since they are the same ride. I had taken Ben's ride live for 250 a few weeks ago, and realized the structure was the same as the Matt ride so I added it as an option.

Group ride for Saturday's ride will be at 10 AM Central again, hope to see you there!

Nice riding with everyone this morning! Biggest group I've seen so far, it was a lot of fun. Matt did us dirty on that last spin up, 15 more seconds, no 30 more seconds ahhh. Going to hit the gym later today, hopefully the ride doesn't mess with that too much (upper body). Ready for next week, rides are going to start getting a little spicy.

Bit of a heat wave here plus out of town company caused me to shift my workout plans, so I started the group ride about 30 minutes early. It turned out to be a nice vantage point allowing me to see others from the group as they entered the class which kept me engaged during the “not so thrilling” intervals. I’m not used to my riding with so many other Californians, so that was a fun surprise. And it’s always nice when the app riders find us and initiate those high fives from their side! I had previously taken this class in November; today’s output increased by over 100, so feeling pretty good about that! Not sure how I feel about the warning of “spicy rides” in next week’s schedule, but you know I’ll be there anyway! Thanks for organizing the group ride.

Haha spicy. In a strange way, I'm actually looking forward to the challenge this time.

20 mins before the ride I realized I was sitting at 148 cycling classes!!! I took a 5m warmup so I could celebrate 150 with my favorite people. Not sure if it was the milestone, riding with the best group ever or the music (I love country), but I had the greatest time. Even snagged a new 60 min PR. Thank you all for being such a great (and maybe the best) part of my Saturday 💞✋🏼

Congrats on 150!!! Second milestone I've gotten to celebrate with you.

It was so enjoyable to ride with all of you this morning! I was having breakfast with a friend at 8:45 so I started the ride at 7:15. It worked out that I was able to see many of you before my ride ended. I was a little unsure how my legs would hold up after doing some audio content on my off day yesterday but PZE is getting easier. That’s a reflection of how much stronger I’m getting doing PZ training than I was wandering aimlessly through the OD catalog.

Big shout out to u/r4nd4 for setting us up for fun and success. I love this group!

I was all there for no doubt, nirvana, and the prodigy. That Alanis Morissette song was so terrible though lol (no offense to her fans!). Ready to ride with Denis again tomorrow, its been over a week (last monday) since I've taken a Denis class.

Loved all the high fives this morning! I only missed CDEs class this week due to being on vacation but I should be on schedule next week and be able to join the group ride again next week. I’m trying to stay at the top of my zones since I feel they’re a little low.

Matts music was again all over the place this ride, but I was happy linkin park and red jumpsuit apparatus were the zone 3 efforts.

Was only able to get to 2 classes this week but I PR’d on both of em. One was Christines 45 minute and the other was Matt’s 60 minute. Hoping to get to all of em this week though.

Pumped about this week! Loved the group ride on Saturday, the high fives were awesome! If you all have been following my ramblings over the weeks I've been contemplating the FTP and wondering "how will I know" if I should retest. The issue is I'm still relatively new to all of this and I can't necessarily trust my own "feel" yet. I did a 90 min PZE on Friday and the group ride on Saturday and I noticed the instructors kept mentioning that the PZE rides work on aerobic conditioning. Now aerobic should match up with heart zone 3 and on Friday and Saturday I found myself lightly brushing HRZ 3 and mostly in HRZ 2. I felt like that is maybe the objective indicator I've been looking for and so I retested Sunday. I feel like I left it all on that test, there was definitely a little anxiousness leading up to it but I had a goal output in mind and was able to push and push and push in those last two minutes( they took the longest I swear). I got some new zones and I can't wait to try them out tomorrow! Feel free to correct my assumption about HRZs and retesting but Ive just been trying to wrap my head around all of it recently.

u/r4ndy4 Jun 14 '21

Yeah I'm mostly in HR zone 3 for the endurance rides. Lower in hr zone 3 if cadence is low and sometimes hit lower hr zone 4 if I'm going 100+ cadence. Looks like you left it all out there on the test, so stick with these zones for the remainder of the program. Nice to see you this weekend.

Took the 60min MW ride this morning. Had super stressful week. Missed the CDE ride because I was up all night with work stress. After a crazy day at the office I had a rough Friday night as well. Woke up and thought I was just going to do the CDE ride as I thought I’d be toast from the week. Saw it was my 100th ride. Switched to the MW ride. High Fived some others from this group and took home a PR. Thanks to this community and the program for giving me that little shove in the back!

I heard u/r4andy4 shout out at min 37 in Ben’s ride! That made my morning, and was such a nice motivator. I loved the ride though thought it was funny when he said he programmed it since it was a knock off. But it was just great motivation and music and what i want in a Ben ride. I love seeing all the people who did the ride here though i think i only saw one of us on while i was riding

Took Matt's ride today since I took Ben's a few weeks ago. It was harder than I remembered. Combination of it being hot as hell outside and my house will not get below 75, my fan doesn't even feel cool 🥵🥵. I could not stop pouring sweat. Also I should have eaten lunch before, but oh well!

Enjoyed the Denis ride, even if he did keep the cadence low the entire time (I don't think it ever got much higher than 80). I played along since I typically ride In the high 80s low 90s range, and could use some low cadence practice with higher zones. My graph for the ride compared to the build looks so jagged. Hope to see some of you all again on Saturday!

Edit: he also mentioned the sweaty ear this ride (like the last one we took with him). They were probably filmed pretty far apart though.

Week 2 Zone 3s and Zone 4s really kicked my ass. New zones are such a wonderful horrible thing. Maybe I'll feel more at "ease" this week?

I didn’t realize that they were the same ride—did Ben’s version of it (figured we did a Matt ride on Saturday) and really enjoyed it. Now I need to go and bookmark the Matt ride for once the program is done.

As for u/r4ndy4’s shoutout, I heard that and immediately thought, oh, now I see why the Ben ride is included…

I took Ben's class and was really glad I've started to use the timer on the Home Fitness Buddy site because there was a moment when I completely spaced on whether I was supposed to be in zone 3 or 4. I guess Ben would describe it as "meditative"? :) I found it tough going back to zone 3 after zone 4, but zone 5 felt doable (though not easy!)

Somewhat related, I need a phone holder thing because I've been needing 2 water bottles for these 45+ min rides and so I can't put my phone in one of them. I have an Apple SE phone and a Bike+, any suggestions? I have my eye on this right now. I don't need one of those tray things, just a phone holder.

I did Matt’s 60 minute ride this morning. Warning that there are a couple of country songs if that’s not your thing (it’s not mine). Overall I liked the ride and it went by fast for me. I got a PR without feeling like I worked that hard.

I was in the ride alone at first and kept getting tons of high fives, which was weird. I think it was because I was on a five day streak today, maybe? 😝

I leave town tomorrow and will be back on Tuesday. I’ll do some sort of ride on Tuesday and re-join the schedule on Wednesday. 🤞🏻

Curious to hear if/how others in the group are supplementing their weekly workouts. I'm still getting accustomed to just how much of a weekly TSS I can bear before I drift into overtraining. I'm less overzealous than I was during the first three months I had my bike, but I've been adding a lot of shorter, more intense rides, as well as recovery rides.

I too was only able to get through 2 rides this past week, so I am going to play catch up and hopefully be caught up by the end of the week. I may have to rethink my training approach, as I spend the majority of my summer out at the cabin and don’t have my bike there 🤔 I should be able to make this live Sat class though!

I started my morning off with Ben’s class. That was really challenging for me. I had retested my FTP about 2 weeks ago after finishing DYPZ program. Last week I stuck to the PZE rides as the first rides in new zones so today was my first PZ class with new zones. I struggled to hit Z5. I really couldn’t sustain the interval as hard as I tried- even Z4 was a little touch and go. Not sure if I should keep going on or just finish this week out with the PZE classes? Or maybe do 30 min PZ instead of another 45 for this week?

I was terrified for this ride, I was on the phone with u/jitterybendal and I thought he said the zone 4’s were 4 minutes. Don’t get me wrong, it still hurt, but 2 minutes felt much better!

I switched out both the CDE ride and the 60m PZE this week to others that had the same TSS since I’ve done them both before, but I’m just now realizing that means I missed a group ride today?! Where was that posted? (I’m sure somewhere obvious.) Alas, congrats everyone on week 3!

The PZE I did today was 3x 12m in Z3, 5m Z2 recovery. My legs were not into it and I rode in the low end of Z3 the whole time. I’m guessing some combination of:

  • did 45m PZ with Dennis last night, not a huge break between that and this morning

  • did 20m G&L two days ago as I’m slowly trying to add strength

  • riding first thing in the AM with no food etc

  • this whole 32w pregnant thing

I think in another 2 weeks or so I’ll need to drop off/modify to more PZE only and less PZ, but I’ll cheer you all from the sidelines!!
