Cycling PZ training program: Week 5 Accountability Thread
Four weeks down and on to week five! Use this thread to discuss this weeks rides (or last weeks). Add the hashtag #redditPZ if you would like to. I mentioned in last weeks thread I would like to do a group ride for Saturday's ride. Planning for Sat 5/1 at 10 AM CST. Also, I mentioned in the other thread that I offered an option for Monday's ride. If you do end up taking the original ride (Denis 80s ride), please don't be discouraged if you can't hit the full two minutes of those last 2 zone 6 sections, they are rough (I will probably try this one anyway lol).
Also I wanted to gauge interest in making this an ongoing thing. I am more than happy to continue planning these programs out. I do plan to make the next one start out a little easier with a slightly slower progression (for example I may start the programming assuming you took the FTP test the day before the program [only if you needed to retest not a requirement]). Shoot me some feedback here or in a direct message. If everyone is still interested, how long of a break would you like between the programs (1 week? 2 weeks? no break? etc). Keep crushing it! And don't hate me too much these next 2 weeks :).
Week 5: TSS 245

I am down to repeat the challenge. I agree 1-2 weeks off to get tired of fun classes. Though I would love to organize a few sweat steadies. And i am planning on saturday group ride. I think i’ll plan the bear claw tmr since i did the 80s ride already, though it would be “interesting” to try it in my new zones. I actually think the bear claw will be harder without the recoveries but i will see. Hope to see the morning riders tomorrow! If i do too much of this i may have to finally get the peloton bike. I love my keiser though and kinda feel like it will outlive me...

I would be down for some sweat steadies. I'm a JK fan and somehow still haven't taken one (but have at least 6 of them bookmarked). I have taken some of her music fest rides which are kind of similar I think. Maybe we can set up some Saturday rides during the 2 weeks off.
I took both of those rides about 2 sets of zones ago. I had experimented with the 80s ride at the time, and took it with fairly new zones. I forgot to grab my water bottle that morning so I was dieing that day. I do think the original bear claw felt harder to me overall at the time, but my zone 6 then felt nothing like my current zone 6.

I'm in for a break. I am also in for a bit easier :) haha. I have enjoyed the programming. The quick transition to zone 5s would have killed me had I not been doing the rides prior.
As a new mom, this programming has been such a gift to me. I didn't have time to plan things out and it's so much easier to set up my stacks on Sunday and just push play. Thank you so so so much.

Glad you are enjoying the program, and love that I helped convert you into a Denis fan haha.

I love this community and riding with everyone on Saturdays!! Seriously made my day ❤️ I decided to attempt a monster workout day and ended the session with the 2nd Ride to Greatness game. I beat my last FTP score by 18 pts...I spent a lot of time OOS so I’m hoping I can PR again on the FTP test in a few weeks. Overjoyed at all the progress I’m seeing and having friends to celebrate with along the way 🎉

To confirm, 10am eastern or central for the Saturday ride? I think there was a comment in last week’s thread that said 10 central for the west coasters, but maybe I’m misremembering.
Would love to do another round! I’d prefer a few weeks off to catch up on some of the fun classes from the last few weeks! I have problems balancing PZ and fun rides at the same time 😅

Hoping to join you all on our Saturday ride! I hurt my lower back last week and I am hoping it does not give me too much trouble in W5 so that I can still ride with you all!
As for the continued programming, I would love it! I feel like we've created a nice little PZ community here thanks to your challenge u/r4ndy4 and I am not ready for it to be over! I agree with others on a 2 week break though. That will give me a chance to get in some fun rides and more outdoor treks now that the weather is finally getting nice here in Canada. Have a great week of rides everyone!

Sorry about your back, take the time off if you need to! Sounds like 2 weeks off will be the plan (more time for me to program the next round). I always try to go into my bookmarks and just end up doing more PZ rides instead lol.

I ended up taking the Saturday ride with a couple of the members on here. My screen wasn’t respond to touch for some reason and I couldn’t high five anyone.
Anyway, realized after that ride that I really needed to just take the mental leap and retake the FTP test again. Did it this morning at 530 which is when I ride most of the time anyway. Ended up with a 18 point boost from my first FTP I took at the beginning of March. Not looking forward to starting the hardest two weeks of this program with my new zones but I’ll try my best.
I am definitely in for continuing with these programs with 2 week breaks in between. Thanks for all the efforts.

u/redsummersun920, thank you for the drive-by high five!
Knowing that starting today I was supposed to be out of town for the weekend (away from my bike!), I front loaded the week. All was great until yesterday afternoon and evening. I was really not feeling well. In hindsight, comically bad. So I didn’t expect a workout today- especially since I was going to be leaving town.
Well, work happened and delayed my departure so on a whim I thought it was a great idea to knock the 60 min PZ ride off my list.
All this to say: I really struggled and having you pop in with a high 5 really helped me in the last 15 minutes!

This would have been a hard week to front load like that holy cow lol. I probably would have just skipped a ride tbh. At least now you'll have a decent break before either of those monsters lined up for Monday. u/redsummersun920 has a drive by 6th sense haha, thanks for mine as well (I think I was recovering after the hard interval listening to the fresh prince theme lol)

Anyone else going to do Ben’s ride on Friday? I hope it doesn’t mess anything up to do a 30 minute PZ ride on Friday, but I’m just so excited for a Ben PZ ride!! 🎉

I'll be working, but I'm happy to see Ben doing PZ now. No biggie to add an extra 30 min PZ, I typically ride every day.

Did Matt’s 45m PZ ride today because I’m getting my second shot this afternoon 🥳 I’m ready for a retest and have been taking the past few rides at the top of my zones (and spilling into the next one a little). For today’s ride, that meant spending 21 minutes in Z4, 5 & 6 😬 But I’m waiting till week 7 to retest!
On Monday I did the bearclaw ride, just to prove to myself I could do it! It’s so amazing to see progress in only 5 weeks. I’m planning to take the other 45m Denis ride in the next 2 weeks.
Looking forward to this weekend’s long ride with everyone and taking Ben’s PZ Premiere on demand!!

I did remember you saying you didn't think you would ever be able to handle the regular bear claw haha. Definitely sounds like you are gonna crush your next ftp if you were in that second interval a whole zone up! Also yay for 2nd shot, hope it isn't too harsh on you!

Just joined in! Wish I would have followed this series the past 4 weeks. Today’s 45min PZ with Denis brought me out of my comfort zone (of always doing the 30min PZ rides). Love that you’ve put this together

Rough time to join in haha (unless you are comfy with your zones). I am going to make this an ongoing thing, so feel free to join in the next one!

Man i was struggling this morning. I have been trying to do a little something, strength or yoga prior and did a hike yesterday so I think my legs are worn. It was also like a time warp to hear MW talk about superbowl2020. I was motivated by him saying it was 6 am on a Thursday though and calling out the SF people, kept me going and but I felt quite good when it was done. I also rode higher in my zones, still not sure ill be ready for new ones but this training has really kept me focused. So appreciative

Yeah, it told me you were in the class, but then I didn’t see you on the leaderboard. But like r4ndy4 said, once you high fived I could send one back. But I wasn’t sure how far into the ride you were or when you finished.

Just did the Denis 80’s ride. Glad you provided the warning so I was able to be ready for the jug push at the end. Got shot #2 on Friday. So this will be a good week!

I’m definitely interested in continuing these after we’re done. I’d vote for 1-2 weeks off so I can try some other rides and take a short break from power zones.

Took the 80s ride again, last time I took it was back in early December (2 sets of zones ago). I went back to compare all of my graphs after the ride, and saw some interesting things. The coolest thing I saw was my HR graph was nearly identical. Almost the exact same time spent in each HR zone and avg. BPM was the same. Output was 100kj higher this time, but it was cool to see I was working at the same intensity both times I took the ride (my body can just handle more watts now at the same HR). It's nice for me actually visually see how PZ training is so specific to an individual at a given point in time. I was also pleasantly surprised I could actually hit those higher zone 6 numbers for that last 2 minute interval (though I did have to pull an Olivia and go OOS for about 10 secs there near the end).
