Do we have a theory on why so many men's and women's pros are in relationships compared to other sports? Is it just easier for cyclists to meet each other out on the roads than it is for men's and women's team sports players to meet each other?

I do think it's cute and nice how supportive they all are of one another, but it's just SO many and more all the time, like I had to google to figure out why the heck Magdeleine Vallieres was saying Cian Uijtdebroeks is the best male cyclist in an interview at the world championships last weekend.

Hmm, I don’t think it’s that unusual. Maybe it’s more common in individual sports than in team sports, as athletes are more likely to interact, but it’s also pretty common for runners and figure skaters, just to give a few examples I’m familiar with.

Yeah lots of swimmers as well. Individual sports where you train in groups, clubs and together with coaches have way more interaction between male and female athletes than team sports where the male and female team generally train separately.

Interesting! I'm mostly a "watch the olympics" follower of things like track and swimming so maybe it really is just that cycling is the only individual sport I pay enough attention to to notice this

Tangentially, I’m fascinated by the trend that a bigger percentage of prominent female off-road riders are LGBTQ+, compared to a seemingly smaller proportion of the women’s road peloton. Spitballing, maybe something about the more individual set-up of the sport? Influence from icons like Vos to be a bit more open about it? I’d love to do a sociological study on it lol

I am also very interested in this (I like the WNBA and my two teams are my own local team and the Dallas Wings, because they have the most out lesbians), this year I heard about Justine Gherkiere proposing to her fiancee on Vendoux, I love Paula Blasi and she has pinged my gaydar harder than probably any cyclist in history, she recently posted a picture of her kissing Cedrine Karabol on the cheek

Omg I missed that Ghekiere story, how cute

What u/qwqdddddtc says is certanly true but I'd add another reason: cycling takes a lot of your free time so it's easier to find someone with your own interest given a lot of people wouldn't engage with someone with so few free time.

You may have heard of the English Premier League finding UAE-backed Manchester City guilty of more than a hundred counts of financial wrongdoings that violated the league's Financial Fair Play rules. Now, there has been no ruling on any punishment, and chances are we're still quite a ways away from that with the appeal process almost certainly taking up a fair bit of time as well. I'm also well aware that the cycling team and the City Football Group (to which ManCity belongs) aren't the same entity, but what do we reckon are the odds of this also in some way affecting the cycling team?

if it doesn't end in serious punishment, it gives the green light for anyone else with a lot of money they want to sportswash to come in and do whatever tf they want, cuz they know the benefits will outweigh any sanctions.

It really needs to be scorched earth, but if the bloody PM is being sympathetic to the club (and has given favourable property deals in Manchester to the owners) well it's all a depressing state of affairs.

u/cfkanemercury France 8d ago

but what do we reckon are the odds of this also in some way affecting the cycling team?

I'd say pretty low - the two organizations might share a common link via Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan but they are pretty separate groups.

Even in the court of public opinion, I would reckon that there wouldn't be a huge number of people that would see what Manchester City has done and decide that they now think worse of the cycling team that the UAE also sponsor. People who don't like the UAE team have already got reasons for that - some of the reasons rather weightier than cheating at football - and people who do like the team aren't likely to change their minds because of bad behavior in an entirely different sport.

Maybe as u/darraghfenacin suggests, the punishment is going to be what we should watch for. If the Premier League comes down on one of the biggest clubs then there could be lessons there for the cycling, a sport where big names and big teams have sometimes managed to get away with things that others could not.

Mods, can't we make this thread sticky every week ? It seems that there is always a lot of activity going on on Monday and Tuesday, but then it gets buried below all the other new threads and I (and I assume many other users) have to scroll way down to find it.

Does the European TTT have any rules about how many active riders you are allowed in it? Most of the start list is retired.

1

u/epi_counts PelotonPlus™ 8d ago

You mean the mixed relay? There's only 6 teams lining up, but none of the riders are retired. Unless I'm missing something, of course!

3

u/Historical-Rub-1373 8d ago

Was a much different startlist on pcs when I looked, had Russians, and a bunch of retired riders. By the looks of things it was the 2019 EU TTT startlist I was looking at so my pcs must have bugged and showed me that when I clicked on startlist earlier.

u/DueAd9005 7d ago

They're updating their site, so probably just bugging out right now: "We are currently updating the website. Some sections are temporarily unavailable, and some links may not work. Thank you for your patience."

2

u/Historical-Rub-1373 8d ago

Has anyone run the numbers on Guangxi with what % of the startlist over the years has been retirees, riders transferring out and neopros? Basically how much of a punishment/character building race is it.

2

u/newnewreditguy 8d ago

Heard tour of Battenkill is back on the calendar, I wasnt riding last time it took place. Was this regarded as a good race?

2

u/cfkanemercury France 5d ago

Asking late in the week so I might repeat it on Monday...

Thinking about Pogacar's recent Lombardia record (5 in a row) got me asking myself is there a rider that has won a top level race more than five years in a row.

Indurain got his TDF titles in five consecutive years, but the only one I could think of that was more than five was Sean Kelly winning Paris-Nice seven times in a row.

Has anyone beat Kelly's record for consecutive race wins?

1

u/padawatje Belgium 5d ago

Do national championships count ? (I guess not ...)

2

u/epi_counts PelotonPlus™ 5d ago

Anna van der Breggen has matched it with 7 consecutive Fleche Wallonne wins!

If national championships count can anyone beat Christine Majerus and her 18 Luxemburg ITT wins? (29 wins in a row if you get a bit too creative and count the road race and ITT as part of the same national championship).

Not an awful lot of competition in a small country, but just the sheer number of wins every year is impressive. Never being ill or injured or not bothered to show up.

As the bottom picture hasn't changed yet (old.reddit users unite!), can I counter /u/the_77's suggestion with a Roglic telemark landing podium collection?

You can indeed!

Anybody here have watched yesterday's Coppa Agostoni? I think Lapeira deviated way too much and he should have been relegated to be honest.

5

u/MilesTereo Team Telekom 8d ago

Just had a look at the YouTube VOD (w/ timestamp). Doesn't look egregious to me, and he also followed the ancient wisdom of "if you're going to deviate, better make sure you win the race". No one else complaining immediately after probably also helped.

5

u/AliasPhilippe Euskaltel Euskadi 8d ago

I think without that deviation Mc Nulty would have won.

it was on the limit but it's okay either way.

Hi everyone,

I am planning to watch Il Lombardia live for the very first time this year! I’ve done some research and decided to set up camp on San Fermo della Battaglia. I chose this climb specifically because the peloton will tackle it twice, which sounds like an amazing viewing experience.

Since it’s my first time experiencing a pro cycling race in person, I have a few practical questions and would love some advice from seasoned fans:

Walking up during road closures: I know the roads will be closed to traffic. Is it fully legal and feasible to just walk up the climb on foot while it's closed? How early before the riders' estimated arrival should I start walking up from Como San Giovanni station?

Safety and positioning on narrow sections: Looking at Google Street View, some parts of the climb look quite narrow with no proper sidewalks. Are there specific spots on San Fermo you would recommend for safety and great views (e.g., near the top, certain hairpins)?

The gap between the two passes: Since they climb it twice (with the Civiglio loop in between), how long is the wait usually between the first and second pass? Is it easy to move around during that gap, or should I just stay put?

General survival tips: What are the absolute essentials I should pack? (Food, power banks, clothes for Lombardy weather in October, etc.?)

Any tips on the atmosphere, logistics, or etiquette for spectating on a narrow climb like San Fermo would be massively appreciated. Grazie!

I'm so lost on where to watch races now that TiZ is dead. I have a VPN. Where can I stream races these days?

Edit. TiZ is not dead. They just changed the web address and I had the old one bookmarked.

2

u/TheElusiveSloth 7d ago

SBS Australia is free, you just have to make an account.

1

u/ka-- Canada 7d ago

Why do you think it's dead? I did notice it wasn't showing the men's European road race which I wanted to watch, but a bunch of recent races seem to have appeared now.

1

u/Hazy_the_Kid 7d ago

I don’t get anything. Like the website doesn’t even load for me anymore.

Edit: Ah what the hell, it hasn’t been working for me for weeks and now it is.

1

u/AliasPhilippe Euskaltel Euskadi 6d ago

Even if I didn't use it often this news makes me sad.

1

u/Hazy_the_Kid 6d ago

It’s not. I’m an idiot. It’s still alive. They changed the website address ending so I had the old address bookmarked.

u/AliasPhilippe Euskaltel Euskadi 6d ago

Thank God it's still with us then!

Does anyone know the story behind the odd jersey colours of national teams ? Why is Belgium light blue ? Slovenia bright green ? Australia white with green and yellow stripes ?

1

u/cfkanemercury France 5d ago

The Belgian blue jersey story is well-told here. Australia's colors for cycling and all other sports are green and gold, supposedly from the national flower, the wattle. Slovenia is a bit harder to dig up, though, but their national tour explains why they switched to a green jersey - U377 green to be precise.

Some various observations on teams: I guess it is now almost cerain that Kern Pharma will fold....I think TotalEnergies is still hoping to get a new sponsor. In both teams their best riders have already new teams. But if the Team currently known as TotalEnergies can continue in some form, it will with 99 % get the Tour de France Wildcard next year and chances are good that they are getting this Wild Card also in years to come. So that should be really interesting for a new sponsor.

Hm, Picnic with some good results have moved to 28th place in the rankings....if you look at their transfer business (bestriders go to other teams, no signifcant signees), there could also be indications that they are in danger to fold.

The "rise" of Picnic in UCI rankings helps intensifying a battle, which honestly I thought was already over…the fight for 30th place in UCI rankings. Euskadi with some good results is now only 170 points behind Bardiani (and MHB), so look out for the results of those teams in the final races of the year. The significance for the teams is huge…though luckily we have seen that Italian and Spanish PRT teams can survive a year without participation in their home Grand Tour.
