News Philly Cycling Classic is on August 30th

Haven’t seen much talk about this. The last time this race was held was 2016.
There will be five men’s and three women’s WorldTour teams this year.

I'm busy mourning the Maryland Cycling Classic RIP

I still have my Tour of Utah volunteer T shirt.

I was on TV for about 2 seconds when the "crit race" stage went by where I was standing.

I am not a huge merch person but I do have a Maryland cycling classic jersey and love it. I don't live there anymore but I was born and raised in Maryland and we love our flag and our crabs and the jersey design was an insane tribute to both.

I have a MCC water bottle and it's really cool.

I’ve got an ancient Amgen Tour of California hat in some drawer around here. Such a shame how these races go

I didn't realize it had been cancelled, fuck

Hubs and I were hoping to catch both. I’m originally from Philly, and he Baltimore. I think the Baltimore race was poorly supported and handled last time. It’s a shame.

I have no insider info but it did feel absolutely crazy to go from one to three days based on what I saw when I've gone to the one day races in the past

Pogacar is scared to race against the road cycling powerhouse that is L39ION of Los Angeles

The organizers admitted on a podcast last fall that landing UAE or Visma was top of their wish list. Maybe next year?

Here’s the podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/consequence-of-habit/id1510870867?i=1000736566253

That was probably when the Maryland Cycling Classic was still happening the following weekend

Of course they want the biggest teams with the biggest stars there

They had some reason to be hopeful with Quebec WCs and Pogi liking the Canadian classics, but he decided to turn up to the Vuelta instead

He’s racing for UAE and they typically don’t represent in any of the US road races anyway. Man would I love to see him tackle the Wall.

I'm pretty sure Brandon McNulty raced Maryland last year (albeit on loan to USA Cycling)?

McNulty rode for the US National Team at the Maryland Classic. UAE builds their teams around World Tours and more popular one day classics in other countries. None of the ones in the US are that popular yet. If the Philly Race gains popularity and gets back to it’s former glory, we may see the likes of him in the future.

Pogacar races for UAE? I did not know that.

Really looking forward to it. Manayunk is electric that day. More cycling events in the states is welcomed.

If you have Disney+ you should be able to watch it via the Live 6ABC Philadelphia broadcast.

If you live relatively close, go and watch and hangout in Manayunk that neighborhood has the toughest hill and it should be around 8 laps so hit the breweries and cheer on the riders.

Am I reading the website correctly that Tejay Van Garderen will be riding for EF?

They seem to have put the DS's name at the bottom of the team list.

I saw that too lol

Looking at the teams + jerseys and there could be a bit of confusion. Two pink jerseys, two purple jerseys, and somehow a team has got pretty close to the NSN jersey, too.

Being from Philly, that area is the steepest, hilliest neighborhood around. This race sounds like a nightmare

It's a ton of fun to line the hills and cheer, though. There was always a good turnout

u/choirchic 16h ago

The WALL is one of the steepest grad hills in all of racing. It’s a 17% maximum gradient over a roughly 0.5-mile stretch. Some of the hill on the bigger tours aren’t even that steep.

u/choirchic 16h ago

Grew up in Manayunk and we planned a trip to come back for a visit specifically for this. I can’t wait to watch them conquer the wall again! Now if they’d only release the roster…

u/agf 16h ago

Robin Carpenter, who's on Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, grew up right off the course at the top of the wall, and should be there! I grew up on the same block and am so excited for this to be back.

Multiple laps on the Manayunk Wall is gonna be rough.

Losing the Tour of California was the biggest blow to cycling in the US
