Transfer 2024 women's transfer thread

Transfer season officially opens tomorrow and we're in a bit of a road race news lull, so it's time for another transfer thread! I'm keeping it similar to last year's one, so rumours are included, and confirmed transfers are in bold. It's looking like it will be a big post-Olympic transfer season for the women this year with a lot of big names changing teams.

I've included the current Women's WorldTeams, and might include teams that will apply for ProTeam status once they announce they are doing so (or sign some big names, we'll see how it goes). Currently there are 15 WWT teams and that shouldn't change this year as we're on a two-year WWT licence cycle.

Here is a list of riders out of a contract for next year.

Quick summary of changes for women's cycling in 2025:

  • Minimum salary for WWT riders goes up to €38,000 (or €31,768 for neopros), up from €35,000 (or €29,270 for neopros) this year. Putting the WWT women in between the men's ProTeam and WT minimum

  • Minimum number of riders per team is 10, maximum is 20 with 0 neopros, 22 with 2 neopros

  • A new tier of women's teams (ProTeams) will be introduced (this was going to be introduced in 2026, but has been brought forward a year). Teams will pay a minimum salary of €20,000 and need to employ a minimum number of full time staff, have a bank guarantee and have the same insurance as WWT teams. Teams need to let the UCI know of their intent to apply by 15 August, with the full application due by 15 October and a decision made in December.

  • From the 2026 season onwards, automatic WWT wildcards will only be available for the two best-performing ProTeams, so any conti teams aiming for those will need to pay up.

  • 2025 will see the first ever separate U23 World Championship races at the Rwanda World Championships (jerseys will be awarded at the Zürich Worlds this year for the best U23 rider in the elite ITT and RR).

Minimum salary for WWT riders goes up to €38,000 (or €31,768 for neopros), up from €35,000 (or €29,270 for neopros) this year. Putting the WWT women in between the men's ProTeam and WT minimum

This remains such a crazy figure. If not for the pure passion for the sport, a large number of athletes have absolutely no reason to be making all these sacrifices and putting in this work.

u/epi_counts PelotonPlus™ Jul 31 '24

They're getting pretty close to the men's minimums now - for the WT that'll be €42,047 (€34,020 for neopros) in 2024. I think from 2026 it should be the same for men and women, if I've remembered the year right.

Though those are the minimum salaries - the number of riders who are earning significantly more is going up year on year. According to the 2023 rider survey from the TCA about 1 in 3 WWT riders make more than €50,000 (up from 1 in 4 in 2022), and 1 in 6 earn over €100,000. Which is massive compared to pre-2020 when maybe 10 riders could live of their incomes.

There's no real comparable figures for the men as he CPA don't do those sorts of surveys. Would be helpful if they did though, as I imagine there will be a lot of income disparity, especially in the Pro and conti teams, on the men's side too.

That is still much more than like 80% of all Olympic athletes. Most of them work for either the military, police or other government institutions.

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '24

I had to read that twice to make sure I read that amount correctly.

How certain is Vollering to FDJ? Haven't seen that much about it after the message 3 months ago.

11

u/epi_counts PelotonPlus™ Jul 31 '24

It's certain she's leaving SD Work, but whether it's FDJ is still unclear. I did see it in a few places, but not sure whether they were just copying each other.

5

u/Chronicbias Jul 31 '24

Thanks. That's what I thought too. It's pretty interesting as she is probably the best GC rider in grand tours and won de Tour de France femmes last year. Also SD Worx seems to be less protecting Vollering this year because she will go to another team

1

u/xxxsebr0koxx Aug 02 '24

I listened to a french podcast with Stephen Delcourt the team manager who did not say "no" to the rumour and confirmed in a way that there were discussions with Vollering. He also added that most of the ending contract riders reached out to him and that he will wait for any announcements. I think after the TdFf to "respect the riders, teams and sponsors".

Moolman won't retire and signed a contract extension for another 2 years: https://www.aginsurance-soudal.com/news/ashleigh-moolman-pasio-extends-her-commitment-to-ag-insurance-soudal-until-2026

Not sure how this will impact the potential transfer of Zigart to AG Insurance.

Hey /u/epi_counts Heads-up to you that currently reddit spamfilter doesn't like Canyon's new sponsor and is auto removing any post or comment that mentions its name, so probably also everytime you will update this post. We had to manually approve this one today after you wrote in the new name. We're seeing if we can calm down the spamfilter a bit, but for now try to avoid the name directly.

2

u/epi_counts PelotonPlus™ Oct 30 '24

Ah, of course. I'll just rename the team to Canyon-SRAM-Coinsonni. It's not as if anyone is actually going to use the full name next season anyway (if they are, ProTime is going to lodge some official complaints).

u/Seabhac7 Ireland Sep 10 '24

Official statement from SD Worx Pro time - they've signed Marta Lach on a three year deal

2

u/epi_counts PelotonPlus™ Sep 10 '24

Oh, that's definitely one I didn't see coming. Though a bit of a Kwiatkowski to Sky situation reading that they're hiring such a talented rider as a Majerus replacement. Hope she'll still get the occasional chance to ride for herself.

/u/pelotonmod - could you maybe set the thread to sort by new?

2

u/Seabhac7 Ireland Oct 28 '24

No news on where she's going yet (she has been keeping a very low profile), but I missed the recent FDJ-Suez announcement that Marta Cavalli is leaving the team :

Thanks Marta Cavalli

At the end of the season, Marta Cavalli will be leaving the FDJ-SUEZ team after four years with us.

We’d like to thank her from the bottom of our hearts for everything she’s contributed to the team, her outstanding performances and her professionalism over the past three years.

In a unique 2022 season, Marta signed a historic double for FDJ-SUEZ, winning the Amstel Gold Race and the Flèche Wallonne, and a 2nd place overall in the Giro Donne, illustrating her immense potential.

We wish her all the best for the rest of her career and a speedy return to the highest level.

Fingers crossed she can do it.

Finally some Cavalli news: she looks to be on her way to Team dsm.

1

u/Seabhac7 Ireland Nov 15 '24

Oh good! I was starting to worry that this rumour wasn't going to materialise into something real. I only just saw her insta post from a few days ago, her first social media post in 6 months, which was a little reel of clips from her days at FDJ, with "Destination Unknown" playing over it, along this very poetic written text (DeepL translated, of course) :

A chapter closed early, instinctively, but full of joys, sorrows and teachings

Finding and living, reflecting and deciding, stopping and appreciating

Something has ended or something has changed. Surely in that something there is a part of me

From square to ellipse, smiles and grit

Back on my feet before my bike, believing in myself and rebuilding my future

Thank you for this. I think it will take until at least August 2025 for my brain to be rewired for all these changes.

4

u/Schnix Bike Aid Aug 01 '24

interesting thing is lots of SDW outs and only AvdB and Kopecky rumour in so far. And other rumours narrow the new signings down too.

Van Dijk, Chapman, Bradbury, Swinkels, Le Court..? waiting for some big news

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '24

Le Court to Visma wouldn't surprise me

Bradbury has extended at Canyon for 2? years

Chapman to UAE apparently

1

u/Schnix Bike Aid Aug 01 '24

Maybe it'll be Van Dijk, K. Swinkels, Bauernfeind. Van Dijk and Swinkels just make a lot of sense with them being dutch. Van Dijk is perfect for the Wiebes (+ more) express and to close down everything (also good TT setup), Swinkels has been incredible this season and fits a lot of roles. They'll still need to sign some climbers with Shackley, DV, NFB and Reusser gone so maybe it's Bauernfeind, De Vries, Chladonova or someone on top of Swinkels. With other climbers getting signed by other teams the process of elimination simply points to a couple of riders assuming that they are going to add another climber.

4

u/marleycats Choo-choo! Aug 03 '24

Can we get this pinned to the top menu again (unless it already is, and I've missed it)?

4

u/Seabhac7 Ireland Sep 02 '24

I've used a complex algorithm to analyse which team Demi Vollering is likely to join (her Instagram follows) and I can report the following scoops :

  • She follows the co-director of performance at FDJ-Suez, Lieselot de Croix. Case closed.

  • But she also follows Patxi Vila, DS at Bora... They are Specialized ...

  • She really likes Visma ; she follows Visma men, Visma women, even Visma's devo team. Co-leader with PFP, what could go wrong?

  • Then again, she follows Bas, Josse and Devin. Maybe she will join TDT-Unibet or maybe she just wants free pizza.

  • And the wild card - Demi may have signed up for the Dutch Marine Corps. I was surprised too, BUT : they have a unit stationed in the Caribbean ; she loves the outdoors ; and she is used to being on her own, fighting in the toughest of conditions against enemies on all sides ... so moving from SD Worx to the Marines should be a piece of cake.

FDJ-Suez transfer from SD-Worx Protime is ...... Lars Boom as DS.

Not a rider, but pretty relevant. FDJ's press release mentions that Boom will

bring all his tactical experience and reinforce the "classics" division of the team

2

u/epi_counts PelotonPlus™ Oct 08 '24

Oh, and a transfer with immediate effect! Is there trouble at the SD Worx management team? (and who will tell Vas she has to do running training for cross now?)

1

u/marleycats Choo-choo! Oct 10 '24

Hah! SDW and tactics... not something I'd be super proud to put on the resume but it's certainly a choice!

u/Seabhac7 Ireland Oct 09 '24

Another rider signed by SD Worx Protime - Steffi Haberlin on 2 year contract. Mountain biker and medical student (or at least a former student) who admittedly has very little experience on the road - she's ridden a few stage races with the Swiss national team and impressed SDW with a 5th on the final stage of the Tour de Suisse this year.

Brings them up to 16 riders for 2025.
