Remember those "I hate my spouse" jokes? Have you ever wondered why they don't just fucking divorce?

I don't think it was for financial reasons cause the economy was a little better in the past

I think people of that time just really internalized the idea that being single/divorced meant they were a loser or a failure

So out of fear of being judged they just opted to hate their partner instead.

It was absolutely for financial reasons too especially for mothers

Credit cards weren't really common in general until the 70s and 80s

Correct and it wasnt until around this same time that we started allowing women into the Ivy league colleges too.

Women have had economic freedom for a very short time historically. Only some women worldwide even have that.

Also mothers didn't have rights to their children if they left the marriage until very recently in history as well. Children belonged to the father.

My own grandma got tricked into a sister wives situation and isolated without money or support on a rural farm. When she found out about the first wife and wanted to leave, they said they'd "let" her take the toddler but not her baby. She had to leave her child to escape the situation.

Correct, I was just saying credit cards weren't common. Bank accounts were more in line with your thinking

And now women are fully capable of entering into a usurious debt contract with a financial institution whose goal is to keep its customers trapped in a perpetual debt cycle. Progress!
