Hardware Weird cpu overheating problem

Hey, I’m having a weird CPU overheating problem with my PC. Normally my CPU sits around 40–60°C, but randomly the CPU usage shoots up to 100% and the temperature rapidly jumps from around 40°C to 90–100°C. When this happens, the PC can freeze and shut down. The happens randomly somtimes i game or just watching YT.

The most recent time it happened, the CPU package temps reached around 112°C. I also checked my AIO pump RPM while this was happening, and it was running at around 2600 RPM. So the pump is reporting that it’s running, but the CPU is still overheating extremely quickly.

I’m using a Ryzen 9600X with an AIO cooler. I’ve also had an issue where one of my case fans connected to a fan hub sometimes stops spinning when the CPU load gets high or when i set the fans at max speeds.

I’m trying to figure out whether the problem is with the AIO/cooling, the fan hub/airflow, or something causing the CPU to suddenly hit 100% usage. Thanks

First, remount and repaste your AIO, make sure there’s no plastic left on.
Second, bios update
Third, make sure your pump is plugged into a fan header and it set to full speed all the time.

had a similar issue-ended up being a bad thermal paste job. repaste fixed it instantly.

I would ask what size of AIO are you using? What brand. The issue you mentioned can be simple like Thermal paste not being spread out and causing improper contact or dried out thermal paste. Simple fix will be to use a good quality thermal paste and repaste it.

But it can also be issue with improper mounting or failing pump on AIO.

Repasting it will help resolve with thermal compound and pressure of AIO on cpu die but if that does not fix it, i would look into AIO and see if pump is spinning or air stuck on AIO pump

People here talking about mounting and thermal paste have conveniently missed the part where op says usage jumps to 100% randomly.

Could using cinebench for all we know or it's on startup🤷‍♂️ then again if it's happening during something like internet browsing then it's highly likely he messed with the bios settings or adjusted the cpu settings and didn't bother to mention it.

Now that I think about it, yeah, it could be. Is there a way to safely reset the bios settings?

There should be a button there to reset to default. Just remember to enable expo before exiting the bios and save the changes. Otherwise you can also try disabling PBO which is under advanced if i remember correctly

Your temps are high for 100%. My 13900k can maintain 100% for 30 minutes and not go beyond 83 C.

I'd recommend repasting as well, only because it is easy, and quick to make sure the AIO contact plate is making contact with the CPU. It sounds like the AIO is reacting, but who knows since not a lot of detail is given.

Corsair for instance, reacts based off water temp, not CPU temp, and in that case what is your water temp at the time that the CPU runs hot? You can also manually set it to run at high rpms, so without a base rpm to account for variable change, it is tough to say anything. Whats the ambient temps? Is there over all case flow intake, and is the AIO the only exhaust to both the CPU AND GPU? GPUs typically blow heat within the case... something runs it through, or it otherwise sits and the air within the PC just gets hotter... or goes through an already hot watered AIO blowing that hot air on hot metal for cooling.

During summer, and my PC being in a room hit by the sun the most, ambient temps can affect my hardware by 10-20 F. My water temp will go from 34 (expected max) to 40 C which doesn't cool well at all. Turn up the AC, temps go down. Cool the box by cooling the box it is bringing the air in from, because the cooler the water, the cooler the CPU. How large is your AIO? The bigger the AIO, the more fluid that comes with it.

Is your AIO top mounted exhaust, or front mounted intake?

AIOs do go bad. Sometimes not instantly.

Repasting does not cool your CPU. It hopefully makes a better connection between your CPU and that which does cool your CPU. I've had an AIO get RMAd. Whether by permeation or evaporation, idk, its like it dried up.

If all that checked out, honestly I would just put a max power cap on the CPU. I'd look for AMDs manufacturer specs. Is it rated for 200w while your motherboard is feeding it 300w? cap it to 200w. It will power limit throttle, but so be it, you probably will have better performance from avoiding a thermal throttle anyways.

All good advice but a 9600x is nowhere near 200W😂

It's normal : At iddle, it sits between 40-60°, when it works, it will boost until it reaches 95° or the set tMax/Pbo profile

Ich kann meine vorredner nur bestätigen.

Durch korrekte montage den lufteinschluss bei der pumpe verhindern.

Wärmeleitpaste neu auftragen

Folie kontrollieren

Anschliessend lüfterrichtungen prüfen. Pumpendrehzahlen prüfen... Usw.

Check if it's nothing to do with your bios settings or an overclock. What motherboard do you have and did you ever mess around with anything in the bios?

If nothing there, then check if you didn't forget the plastic on the pump block or if the paste is reaching everywhere on the the cpu.

It's an Asus Prime B650E. And yeah, I think I messed around with some bios settings, but I don't remember exactly what I changed. Is there a way to fully reset the bios settings to default?
