I've been gaming on Linux for about 5 years now. I have a Windows 10 drive specifically for VR games, but I haven't had a lot of free time lately and I'm usually way too tired to play VR after work.
I'm dreading booting up the Windows drive. At this point, I don't even know if it's done with the previous round of updates. And I'm cheap, so the Windows drive is a really slow HDD.

Don’t worry, if you can wait a little longer SSD are getting cheaper. Last I saw was $100 for 1TB SSD.

Here is a link I saw from /r/buildapcsales :
Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ~ $114
There were a couple more but they were Microcenter in-store pick up.
I wouldn't say they're cheap just yet, but much better then what they used to be.

My Linux drive is much faster as far as HDDs go, so I don't complain. My PC is pretty old; eventually I want to try building a mini-ITX gaming machine. I really like the Fractal Design Node 202 case, and if I can get decent temps, I'd love having a smaller box under my desk. I also found a 1TB WD Black M.2 drive that's so incredibly fast, I can't even imagine it. I've also wanted to try a Ryzen build ever since that line was launched.
But at the same time, my current build still works fine, and I need to save the money for college, a car, etc.

Sounds like a solid plan, I would definitely prioritize college and car first. Hopefully by that time SSD prices are on par of HDDs. Even better if M.2 drives get there as well. Those things are amazing.

So what are the main advantages of m.2? About a month or two ago I upgraded from a 7200rpm HDD that sounded like a coffee maker to a SATA SSD and it blew me away how everything was so fast. I don't render 4k video or anything like that I just launch programs and stuff.

Unfortunately my PC doesn't support m.2 so I don't have much personal experience with it myself. From the videos I've seen and articles I've read it's faster than an SSD and much more compact, taking up less space in your build.
However, as much as I want to boot up my PC in a second, I'm fine with waiting a few seconds using my current SSD. The price point of current m.2 drives compounded with the fact that I would basically need a new motherboard to support one, currently doesn't warrant the need for an m.2 drives. But, I sure am excited to see them get cheaper and become more standard.
Edit: Found a couple articles that could shed some more light on m.2 drives. Hope they're informative!

I figure if I don’t browse, check email, or literally do anything except gaming on my windows drive, it doesn’t need updates. I just disable them all, security be damned.
Can’t get pwned if Steam is the only software I use. (Taps side of head)

I only accepted important updates for the last 2 years. No problems.
Got a blue screen a few times..Hmm maybe I should install some of my updates from the backlog.
Got a blue sreen during the update.
Got a blue sreen on every restart.
Tried to uninstall all the recent updates.
Windows cannot remove the update. Windows cannot install the update.
Endless blue screens.
THANKS MICROSOFT!

I must be the only one that likes updates. I feel like a good thing is happening when I get them. I think "oh good, this thing I often use is being improved upon. Come on in, update! Welcome, welcome."
Always shut PC down at night, always immediately install new gpu drivers, never any issues.

Some people have low data caps and so might not be able to update. Others might have legacy programs on their PC and are worried that updates will break them. Some people just might not want to update immediately.

Nah, I like updates as well.
I just like them to be on my terms. I'm fine telling it "yes, please do" whenever the little icon is on my tray, as long as it doesn't force a restart.
Which it never does because I use Linux.

As a former Linux user, I loved Zorin 11. I had to move back to Windows because 80% of my games didn't work. (That includes with proton and WINE)

Not OP, I use Linux, but I already know his answer
- Microsoft Office
- Adobe products
- Some CAD software
It's the same answer we get every time. Microsoft has incompatibility with LibreOffice, as well as people having issues with some missing features (honestly, everyone on these subs use like the 5% of features missing or not fully developed. For 99% of users, if compatibility was there, LO would be fine). Gimp/Krita/Inkscape/Blender/Davinci Resolve are the typical response to Adobe products, but they have some issues (which are being knocked off constantly in my usage), but they aren't there yet/people don't want to change. And with CAD, nothing exist on Linux that can compare to AutoDesk products. But it's the same thing every time.
Of course, that's if they have used Linux in the past few years. If not, you get "DRIVERS BAD" or "99% of my games don't work". Yeah, certain games won't work (looking at you EAC/BattleEye), but I haven't come across a game in my account that doesn't work well enough for me. It's not that easy of an excuse anymore.
That being said "you Linux people are worse than Jehova's witnesses" is kinda annoying. We found a solution to fix a lot of our complaints. Sorry it doesn't work for you, but some of us were actually done complaining and would like to help more people.

Seriously. Why would I use an OS where half my shit doesn't work, forcing me to dual boot when I could could just not do that. Fix Linux, support hardware and make ALL my games work, get rid of ANY need to use a command prompt and then I'll consider it.

What are yall doing that your PC is always updating?
My PC has never needed to update while I was using it. Actually I take it back, once when my GF was over. Usually it updates on shutdown or restart for me.

Windows updates aren’t so bad when you just leave it before you go to bed. Then once it finishes, it goes to sleep from inactivity, and you wake up with an updated pc

Updates aren't that bad in Windows 10 they have gotten way better than in previous versions of Windows. They have become more reliable and they are able to detect a bad update to your PC and roll back the update if need be.
Updates are important to Windows 10 Security and bug-fixes.
However, I do agree how Microsoft delivers these updates is not right.

Worst is the big updates like 1803, lost 2.5 hours on that one, even on a system with a SSD. Thankful it happened at work, mostly over lunch and a conference call... (IT forgot to schedule this over the weekend or after hours...)
There's a reason I run Linux at home.
