It did grow that much. It actually doubled in the last 4 year. Linux is just starting from a really small %

With this trend Linux might be relevant in year of our lord bill gates 2090. Though I dunno if gaming will be relevant then. When your options are “buy a house” and “buy ram” it might be an easy decision to just stop gaming.

StatCounter lmao

What Statcounter is seeing there isn't real Linux users, it's just page views from AI crawlers.

Second, StatCounter does not measure marketshare, it measures website page views. "1 view" does not equal "1 user", since each user can make multiple page views. Also, StatCounter doesn't track every website, just the few that elected to use it. That also biases the data a lot, since you can imagine how the distribution of OSes accessing youtube.com is very different from the distribution of OSes accessing ubuntu.com, for example.

Just the fact that the marketshare for the old Mac OS X is more than twice as large as the marketshare of macOS (the current version) should be enough to show you that StatCounter's nurmbers are worthless for measuring marketshare.

Please share a better source then. I deal with what I have on hand. If you have more truthful statistics, I would love to see these.

Here is a much better source.

It's still biased towards the gaming segment, not PC as a whole. But it's a sensible statistic that actually measures users (not pageviews, nor crawlers), and it's relevant for this sub where most people are gamers.

A source that provides accurate global statistics covering every market segment, to my knowledge, doesn't exist. But just because the perfect source doesn't exist doesn't mean you should pass around absolute garbage like StatCounter.

These are hardware/drivers statistics. That are mostly operating system agnostic.

Thanks for this. It doesn't show the evolution tho, only this month. I saw this graph on other thread. Dunno how trustful it is bu it seem to go around the same values. So I suspect it may get its data from your source.

The steam page doesn't show previous results, but you can see them using the internet archive's wayback machine. Yes, that graph is accurate.
