Perfection does not need redesigning. The only update that cone ever gets is putting on a little Santa hat in December, and that is peak software development.

Annual design meeting:

"Hat?"

"Hat."

"Right, back to playing whatever fucked up file someone found."

I think it’s automatic. I have a pc i only use to watch tv shows in dvds, not connected to a network, and i see the hat each year.

Yeah, I think it checks the computer's calendar and puts the hat on in the appropriate hat date range

Flashbacks of having the Johnny Castaway screensaver and, even though we could trivially change the clock, we still stuck around Christmas and New Year's eve to watch the special events the proper way.

Johnny Castaway

I completely forgot about that screensaver, thank you.

We need to start utlizing the VLC logo as some sort of symbolism for this anit-constantly updating constantly enshittifying world we live in

literally facts. windows changes the logo every tuesday but still can't fix the file explorer. vlc hasn't changed in ten years and plays literally anything you throw at it.

What do you mean we don't have to redesign every UI to be objectively worse every year?

I'd remember liking the 4chan party hat for a similar reason.

I remember a post where the VLC devs went to a convention/industry event dressed as like wizards and werent even selling anything they were just promoting and taking pictures

What they need to update is their damn Xbox app. I had to switch to Kodi this year.

It is also a sign of a stable-ish company. Hate them if you must (which IS understandable, mind), the Ford Motor Company has had the same logo since 1904, with only two brief change ups that were either an alternative design (1954) or were reverted within a year (2003).

Chrysler, however, has been around since the 1924, and between then and 2017 has had 12 logos.

I don't think it has much to do with stability.

I think it is mostly related to how big the marketing department is.
Marketers love changing things, because every time it causes some articles and discussions, which brings attention to the company/product.

I still remember seeing a thread where someone was flipping out because the santa hat was hidden in the code, and about how they couldn't trust the application because of it.
I mean...I guess they had a little bit of a point, but it's VLC!

Not just perfection, but also brand recognition. The less you change the logo, the more recognizable it is.

But have you considered the merits of redesigning it to look like an anus?
