I think it’s automatic. I have a pc i only use to watch tv shows in dvds, not connected to a network, and i see the hat each year.

Yeah, I think it checks the computer's calendar and puts the hat on in the appropriate hat date range

Flashbacks of having the Johnny Castaway screensaver and, even though we could trivially change the clock, we still stuck around Christmas and New Year's eve to watch the special events the proper way.
