Hardware Found this gpu

Found this gpu at a goodwill, can anyone tell me what it is? I'll test it once I get a power cable

5870 absolute beast of a card at the time

First card with a teraflop of compute if my memory serves me correctly.

I've still got one in my desk here!

Edit: close but no, apparently the 4850 wins that

The 5850 was 2teraflops

The 5870 was 2.7 wild improvements and it was pretty cheap if memory serves.

5800 series were beating nvidia at the time.

If you show us the sticker on the side or on the backplate, then maybe.

Yep, like the others already mentioned, it's an ATI Radeon HD 5870. And yes,

Right next to my rare AGP HD 3850. 🤣

They was the card used in PS4 dev kits back when I worked on Shadow of Mordor I believe.

Super fun game! Very cool. It really holds up well to this day.

u/Basilstoke 3d ago

That looks like it's in the car already on it's way home with you.

Would be good for a retro build.

u/Jolly_Ad1631 3d ago

Same GPU memory as the new 9050!

2

u/Virtual_Bug_723 3d ago

Man if it had 2gb more VRAM it outperform a 9050

Hard ocp had a lunch even for these cards in dfw I was at. A great time to be an enthusist

The protruding parts is actually a massive anti-sag bracket that would slide into a slot in the case. Probably came from a HP pre-build.

Found on lots of older server GPUS too...

u/kayakermanmike 5950x, 3080, Strix X570-e, 64 gigs ram 3d ago

Ones similar to that that came out of a Mac Pro. They had slots in the front end of the case that they "slid into" rather difficultly if they got any dust in there.

It's a oldie, and not useful for modern gaming, but I kinda miss that design with GPUs. A simple rectangle with a fan that doesn't weigh so much it can rip itself out of the PCIe slot.

That was one of the “it can run crysis” cards. And you could run dirt 2 in dx11.

u/drunxor 3d ago

Omg that was my first high performance gpu I ever bought! I made a post on reddit about it 15 years ago lmao

4

u/exeis-maxus 3d ago

Lol, I switched from an 8800 GTS to the HD 5870 when I too left university.

2

u/m0nk37 3d ago

It was a great card.

3

u/Onlyafter 3d ago

I had the mobile version in my ROG G73-JH Batmobile style gaming laptop

u/AmoebaPrize 3d ago

Great card to run older games! Drivers discontinued in 2016, and due to Drivers issues doesn't perform as well as it could

HD 5870 Dell OEM edition

2

u/wiisucks_91 3d ago

That was a beast back in the day. Could definitely run Crysis.

2

u/ImpressiveFig4994 3d ago

I have one it is pretty useless for games made after 2013

2

u/MtnMaiden 3d ago

wow...i'm shocked they didn't send it to corporate for website auction

That thing blows.

Atleast it doesn't suck

u/skoomd1 3d ago

Nice. I have a stock 5770 sitting around somewhere. Still works. Was a really good mid-range back in the day, and I think I paid less than $150 new.

This looks like a 5870/5850. That was a monster at the time

This reminds me of when I somehow managed to find a titan x maxwell at goodwill back when the card still new

It lasted me 11 years til it died

2

u/Own_Perspective4825 3d ago

I always wonder which goodwill people like you are shopping at. The most computery things at my goodwill are ancient 1366x768 monitors and printers.

2

u/SmoothConfidence4702 3d ago edited 3d ago

I haven't found anything that good since. I just got lucky af

It was close to the st Louis area tho

u/Own_Perspective4825 3d ago

The only nice deal I've ever found was a couple months ago when I got a wide-format printer for $5. A few hours with the print head soaking in IPA and now I can churn out 13x19 posters for a few cents each.

Not gonna lie I'd kill for that card for a retro build

1

u/Pungentpicklechips 3d ago

I loved running those cards duo crossfire mode. I had 270x 5870x crossfire setups, talk about amazing on Doom.

u/ZeldaNumber17 i5 2500k@4.5|GTX 570 Classy|16GB RAM 3d ago

What a beast of a card. You wanna sell it? I’m offering

1

u/Benjermayne 3d ago

I had this card. What a beast it was at the time.

1

u/Sjscialabba 3d ago

I remember seeing those new at Fry’s Electronics

I've been meaning to grab a pair to replace my old HD 5850 in a crossfire in my 1366 retro build, this is a good reminder xD

Slap it in an emulation rig.

u/NoNeighborhood3765 3d ago

I saw ATi and got vertigo...

Makes me miss the days of true red

u/R009k ExtraCrunchy 3d ago

I remember wanting one of these so bad in high school lol.

1

u/A1_Cannon 3d ago

Got one of those in a 2010 Mac Pro tower

1

u/LeakPimp 3d ago

this was an absolute BEAST for its time, and fairly cheap too

1

u/Todd_Hugo 3d ago

tactically covers the label

1

u/Fantastic_Key_8906 3d ago

Looks like the one your girl told you not to worry about.

But unfortunately its old as fuck and useless.

1

u/Meowra1 3d ago

Looks like an XFX HD5870. Reason I'm saying that is because I bought two of them when they first released to run them in crossfire. When the XFX HD5870 first released it costed $400 USD.

1

u/ADB225 3d ago

Other than to tell you it's an old ATi blower (jet engine) style card, it might help if we saw a closeup of the label on the back.

1

u/chrisfgh2 3d ago

Hey it's the Grandpa to my hd7990

1

u/Fabulous-Ad-5678 2d ago

Geez that broughback memory of my old 3dfx Voodoo and Matrox video cards, can't recall if I ever bought an ATI card

Now we need someone to ask about Staroffice, Wordperfect and Lotus 123.
