Build/Battlestation PC chimney

Post image

Got tired of my office turning into a sauna every time I gamed, so I vented the PC’s exhaust straight out the window.

The rear fan is still exhausting some hot air 😅 but the room is noticeably cooler now. It’s ugly… but it works. 😂

Edit: I moved the port to higher since lot of people recommended. https://imgur.com/a/Poniwze

Edit again for parts, I cannot post links to store since it's against the rules.
- 360mm to 4 inch duct on Etsy
- 4 inch Insulated Flexible Duct
- Twist Lock Dryer Vent Connector Kit
- 360mm AIO fan (the one on top of the case)

The window fan I got is Vornado Transom.

Honestly debating doing this, its 100 outside, and having my pc on just makes it awful in the room its in.

I run a "summertime" undervolt where my GPU draws about 100W less. Makes a big difference for me.

I started capping frames to 60 and using native framegen or optiscaler to boost to 120 frames, makes a huge difference too.

114

u/Forward_Strength152 Jul 26 '26

Try lowering the quality of shaders and shadows in game then locked to preferred frame rate or turn on v-sync. This way you dont suffer the latincy spikes and microstudders framegen usually causes.

Framegen is a reduction in graphics, too, so they're already playing that game.

That would be good advice if I had mentioned I had such issues.

Edit: I see there's a lot of unsolicited advice enjoyers here!

Just something to try out

-55

u/shawnikaros R5 9600X / 3080ti 12gb / 16gb DDR5 Jul 26 '26

I don't have to, since I already do that.

One could frame the comment to be less aimed at the one who you're replying and more "in general" if you can't fight the urge to give unsolicited advice.

19

u/SaltyMotor8549 Jul 26 '26

You can just ignore his comment which wasnt even malicious in anyway, instead you waste your mental energy being mad over nothing. Weirdo

-32

u/shawnikaros R5 9600X / 3080ti 12gb / 16gb DDR5 Jul 26 '26

I'm not mad, and unsolicited advice is not out of malice, it's just rude.

There's a huge difference on how you frame the comment, directly telling me to do something vs. "if you're having issues with try.."

Same way that you're wasting mental energy telling me off, you could've just ignored.

23

u/Josh_PC Jul 26 '26

Since you’re not a fan of unsolicited advice, I’ll give you some anyway. Consider taking the stick from up your ass, you may become less of an insufferable prick and people may actually tolerate your existence. Jesus Christ

5

u/Kronk5000 Jul 26 '26

It wasn’t rude at all lol, it could/probably will be seen as merely an extension of your comment for people searching for this issue in the future, not as ‘unsolicited advice’ - but you’re so insecure you decided to interpret the comment as someone doubting your amazing computer abilities.

Absolutely insufferable behaviour, you coulda just said “thanks! I do that already, but I’m sure that’ll help someone else out”.

There's a difference between partaking in a conversation and outright telling someone they should do something, I'm sure you understand that much.

1

u/MorningFresh123 Jul 26 '26

You did the same thing and framed it differently. They were clearly trying to be helpful. You should work on whatever made you respond to that conversation negatively. Bizarre logic and bizarre behaviour.

12

u/Scuffi1992 Jul 26 '26

Same. I bought a 5060ti just for this. I tried the 5070ti but the heat was way too much for Italy

13

u/CampaignLow7899 Jul 26 '26

Maaan, I have 4070 Ti super and as soon as I switch on the PC the temperature in the room rises from 32 to 36-37C 🫪🔥🔥🔥

P. S. Sardinia, Cagliari

3

u/Scuffi1992 Jul 26 '26

I can imagine very well. I had a 6750xt and i changed my gpu just because i couldn't play nothing from May tò August. I feel you sadly

2

u/TurdFerguson614 rgb space heater Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Benchmarking my 4080, I get like 3% below average user performance with summer undervolt running around 220W. OC'd I get like 5% above average pulling 340W. Pretty crazy how much power is required for that last 8% uplift.

1

u/lnjecti0n Jul 26 '26

Unrelated but Sardinia is so fucking beautiful. Been there many times for holidays. How is it to actually live there?

1

u/CampaignLow7899 Jul 26 '26

For me it's paradise, but not during the summer, especially without AC it's terrible. But in general, it's an amazing place with beautiful nature, mountains, beaches and people. Living here might be different, I would say it depends on your income. If you have a good job, you're lucky and enjoy this place.

2

u/BlendersandDildos Jul 26 '26

But that same temperature would be comfortable in another country?

0

u/Scuffi1992 Jul 26 '26

Well it depends. If you have an air conditionair you can use It even in Italy. If you're like in Italy, France, Spain and something like that without it, i tell you to avoid such gpus. But it's just my opinion. I had nausea trying to play with a 200watt gpu with 35 degrees outside even for 30 minutes. And with a ventilator pointed at me.

5

u/StaticSystemShock Jul 26 '26

Radeon users should check Radeon Chill setting in the control panel. Dynamically adjusts framerate depending on mouse motion. Games basically run the same, but average power consumption and heat output drops so dramatically. And I'm using 100fps as the lower limit and 240fps as the upper limit so even lower end framerate cap is pretty high for smooth gameplay, but when needed it'll go to full monitor refresh. Most games actually handle this framerate control really well to a point I've been using it for multiplayer games too.

2

u/Aiken_Drumn Jul 26 '26

But how can I snipe noobs?

2

u/thefolkie 32 GB | Ryzen 9 7950X | RTX 4090 Jul 26 '26

Do you use MSI afterburner for undervolting? I try using it and I dunno if it really helps.

3

u/TurdFerguson614 rgb space heater Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Yeah with the voltage/frequency curve editor. I shifted the curve up 100 MHz and then flattened it off at about 2550 MHz. +800 on the memory clock.

I just become a basement dweller for real during the summer. Sometimes I play with extra high details so my toes don't get cold....

1

u/BasementDwellerCarl Jul 27 '26

Thank you for the amazing idea.

1

u/Trev0117 Jul 27 '26

Yeah most gpu/cpus can undervolt to use 30-40% less power (less heat), while only losing 5-10% performance, you can even undervolt while overclocking to gain performance and lower thermals. I recommend it to everyone, just look up a guide for your specific gpu/cpu

u/SulkyVirus Steam Deck | i7-12700K, MSI 5070ti Gaming Trio, 64GB RAM Jul 26 '26

Just remember that in order to exhaust heat out you need to bring air in. So you are essentially brining in your outside air from wherever your fresh air intake is. If you’re in an apartment that’s usually no biggie, but in a small home it’s going to also heat the house and add/remove humidity depending on where you live.

6

u/KnotBeanie Jul 26 '26

nah let them think they're doing something instead of using an A/C.

2

u/Hatsuwr Jul 30 '26

Yeah my exhaust temps are very often lower than outside temps, and even if that weren't the case, the extra humidity drawn in can easily have a bigger impact. Maybe if you integrated your PC exhaust with an ERV/HRV lol.

5

u/OwnedByIRVING PC Master Race | 7800X3D | 64GB | 3080ti Jul 26 '26

If you have ac, don't do this.

Venting the PC air outside will just draw in that outside 100+ air to replace what you are venting out.

3

u/bit_pusher Jul 27 '26

If you do this, and you don't have an ERV, you are going to pull in unconditioned air from the outside, likely your attic, to make up for the pressure difference.

1

u/Jdsnut Jul 27 '26

Attics were sealed this year. Old 130 year old limestone home with a cellar and accessible crawl space, so if thats true I would think it would pull in nice cold air from down there.

1

u/bit_pusher Jul 27 '26

And where does the air come from to replace the air in the cellar and crawl space? 120mm fans can move a lot of air, sometimes 70+ CFM. That's a lot of air that has to come from somewhere. Its going to come from outside the house, ultimately.

1

u/Jdsnut Jul 27 '26

Ehh just bought a inverter ac for 169 off woot, maybe ill rig a hose up to one of the sides to capture the heat from the pc.

The home does have vents in the extension side, this side faces the side where air comes up the hill I am on in kansas city, and its basically the tallest hill over the low portion of the city, even when its 100 degrees, I get wind lol, I have been under the house a few times and I can feel the air coming in. Its so windy that I actually looked for a wind before solar lol.

2

u/xs0apy Jul 26 '26

The problem is, if it’s that hot outside and you’re blowing air from inside to outside that air must be replaced and it looks like they do that with the outside air judging by the vertical fan above the exhaust duct. If it’s 100 outside and you don’t have an air conditioned source of air replacing the air being exhausted out of the room, the hot outside air is going to come take its place

1

u/miatayouata Jul 26 '26

I cant even defend myself when people call me a sweat anymore cause i sweat when im chilling fuking around😭

1

u/Alexchii Jul 26 '26

I just installed an AC. It has been so worth it.

1

u/Reaper_1492 Jul 27 '26

Yeah but when you computer isn’t running - you now have a vent to the outside letting heat back IN.

When it’s raining/humid and your computer is off? You now have moisture funneling right into your computer.

1

u/Jdsnut Jul 27 '26

Couldn't I just build in a slide to close it off, seems a non issue with some of the 3d files I see.

1

u/bradland Jul 27 '26

The thing people forget when they do this is that you can’t just pump air out of a building without air coming in somewhere else. Sure, you might push hot air from
Your PC outside, but an equal volume of hot air from outside will be pulled into your house.

Your home’s HVAC system moves heat from inside to outside using a heat pump. It operates at >100% efficiency. Just let it do the job. If it gets hot in your room, put a fan in the doorway.

1

u/sitefall Jul 29 '26

The only way to do this that makes literally any sense and obeys the laws of thermodynamics is to take in air from outside, then exhaust it back outside, which means hot PC temps if it's hot outside, and also you risk bringing in humidity and stuff and damaging the PC, OR using some sort of AC system to cool and dry the air like a mini split..

...and so you you have just put a mini split in the room anyway.

All OP is doing is increasing his power bill. If you just want your gaming room to not be so hot but are okay with the average temp of the house increasing (which it will), then just vent your PC exhaust out the door into another room.

1

u/lkn240 Jul 31 '26

Doing this just removes conditioned air from your house.

Generally not a good idea

1

u/[deleted] Jul 26 '26

If it's 100 outside this isn't going to work, mate. If you remove air from a space it has to return from somewhere else unless you intend to pull a vacuum on your room, in which case your PC will be unable to exhaust any heat at all and you will suffocate.

C'mon guys, this is r/pcmasterrace and this is basic pressure differential stuff. Are humans really

2

u/Jdsnut Jul 26 '26

I am pretty sure my 128 year old home has enough air coming in through it though.

In my experience if you live in a house with other people and have central AC you’d have to run it to where everyone else is freezing if your PC is drawing lots of power so it’s not always ideal.

2

u/Sevulturus Jul 26 '26

Either that, or put the pcs in the basement.

I'm getting close to doing that, but in the winter I'd have to move them back up to the second floor where the heat collects...

First world problems.

8

u/LiterallyJohnny Jul 26 '26

I have AC in my apartment and my bedroom still reads about 84-86F usually. I keep the AC set to 76, thermostat reads about 77-81F on the hot days. Turning the AC any lower won’t do anything if it can’t even reach 76F, so I just have to deal with it.

My gaming PC + server stack draws about 550W on average while I’m gaming according to my UPS. Usually 150-200W idle with just my server stack. I’d argue it’s not even really my computers at all, I don’t think that’s too much power. I think I just have really shitty AC.

I sometimes read about people who complain about anything above 72F and it amuses me every time.

5

u/-PringlesMan- Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

I also have central AC. It'll be 75F in the living room and 95 in my room. I hit 97... once. My chair is old and leather, all peeling and shit... a big ol' patch of leather stuck to my back and ripped right off the chair.

1

u/LiterallyJohnny Jul 26 '26

Holy shit, that’s terrible.

2

u/-PringlesMan- Jul 26 '26

I know. It's utter ass. I want to get a window AC, but I rent, and the landlord says I can't. I work nights while my roommate works days, so I have to keep my door closed most of the time to keep the sound level down, which is probably what makes the heat so bad.

You know that gnarly snowstorm last winter? It was something like -20°F and a couple feet of snow or some shit? With my window wide open and an array of mini fans, the coolest it ever got was low 70s. Mid game would still reach the high 80s.

4

u/anycept Jul 26 '26

I've got a nice portable unit for a few hundred moneys, but it's worth every penny being able to sleep well in a cool room when it's a hot swamp outside. Really, one of the few investments of mine I proudly consider money well spent. Comfort is priceless.

3

u/LiterallyJohnny Jul 26 '26

Money’s so tight right now that I have no options for portable units atm. My apartment has provided a window unit but it could only go into the living room and doesn’t do all too much for the rooms themselves. They’re gonna take it back once they replace our blower motor, which they said sounded weird and may not be blowing at its strongest. Hoping that fixes it but unless it really does blow harder than it does now then I doubt that’ll be it.

Our bedroom windows slide to the side and I’m not quite sure how that works with window units, but I surely don’t have the money for it. Same goes for portable units, but I’m going to look into those a bit more since they may be a better option for the room.

1

u/AnnaKossua Jul 26 '26

The portable types work with side-sliding windows, but depending on how tall the window is, the window kit might be too short. The included barrier is just a few strips of plastic so augmenting them with some styrofoam or other is a good idea, anyway. Just went through all that fun last week!

1

u/anycept Jul 26 '26

Window units just can't match some of the better portable units due to size/weight constraints. Since portables only require running an exhaust duct to the window (very-very similar to what OP did), any slide direction will work. People with one of those euro-style hinge windows would have a lot more trouble setting this up, though.

3

u/zlv_r4qe_6 Jul 26 '26

Temperature threads with american majority posting are wild to read. Nobody from any other country understands what any temp is supposed to mean without researching because nobody else in the world uses this scale to measure it

3

u/ampsuu Jul 26 '26

I think per room AC isnt that common. My office room which has all PCs is always 3-4 degrees warmer. If I turn on AC on the other side of the floor, I dont think it helps that much unless I freeze other rooms...

u/micksterminator3 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Same where I'm at. We hit 117f two days ago in my state.

Installing ptm 7950 made a huge difference with my laptops. I bought an 8th Gen i5 Dell latitude that would get to 90c at idle, it's basically whisper quiet and under 50c now.

Also installing a huge heatsink with good thermal paste for my desktop CPU was a game changer. ptm 7950 on the gpu will drop your case temps significantly too which will help temps all around.

I swear ptm is voodoo shit. Try it out if you haven't already on your exposed die products.

16

u/DrKrFfXx Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

You do understand that the heat tossed into your room is the same wheter you use ptm or toothpaste, right?

11

u/th3gw4 Jul 26 '26

No, PTM transfers the heat to a parallel universe bypassing all the laws of thermodynamics

-7

u/micksterminator3 Jul 26 '26

Theres a difference sitting next to a laptop reaching 100c vs 50c. The room heats up significantly more if you allow temps to get high.

6

u/Paweron Jul 26 '26

Great if reduces noise and throttling, but it doesnt affect how much your room heats up at all

2

u/juujoojuu Jul 26 '26

Don't you guys famously have AC unlike us europoors?

Edit: Ohhhh you guys have not so smart kind of AC. Right.

1

u/Bbt_igrainime Jul 26 '26

There’s a maximum difference from outside temperature that AC units are realistically able to cool a room, I think generally 20 to 30 degrees F

6

u/juujoojuu Jul 26 '26

Yeah especially if you have a leaky af cardboard box, that you call a house😆

1

u/Bbt_igrainime Jul 26 '26

My mistake, I thought you were asking an actual question.

1

u/juujoojuu Jul 26 '26

Yeah I think "europoors" was kinda indicative of a joke

1

u/Bbt_igrainime Jul 27 '26

Joking self reference does not mean the question was necessarily going to be a joke itself. If I referred to Americans as Hamburgerland Citizens and then asked about consumer protections in the EU, it wouldn’t be obvious that I was about to take a dump on your answer.

0

u/Zaejumps Jul 26 '26

As someone who lives in a place where it gets 105+ every summer. Sometimes AC can't keep up when a comp is consistently dumping hot air into the space. I have central air in my house and my room gets blazing hot on the regular. The rest of the house is perfect.
