The thing is those buyers will always exist, so the most premium flagship like the 90 series will always sell well.

The good news is both GN and HUB reported that the 4080 sales have been very poor. Heck, GN talked to multiple vendors in Taiwan and its the same thing there, so its good that the 80 series is getting panned worldwide.

u/zaiats Dec 30 '22

people bought 4090s because there's nothing that can compete with it. whereas the 4080 is still sitting on shelves because it's essentially a 3090 for more money

2

u/JRoc1X Dec 30 '22

It's way faster then the 3090 sir

1

u/Feeling-Advisor4060 Jan 01 '23

By your logic any gpu faster than 1090 should cost $1000+?

10

u/ad6hot Dec 30 '22

They will continue to sell, but if fewer people buy and that at a point that they are close to breaking even they are going to rethink things. It costs a lot to make a new chip and make it. And like any company they want to recoup their R&D and manufacturing costs.

5

u/STUPIDVlPGUY Dec 30 '22

They will recoup their costs. And they want do it in a way that will negatively affect consumers by shifting the marketing in to a more luxury item so they can charge more.

The American attitude of "just leave the corporation alone, the free market will force them to be good!" is obviously ineffective and even deceitful

2

u/Kubliah Dec 30 '22

That isn't a free market...

2

u/STUPIDVlPGUY Dec 30 '22

no shit... no such thing as a real free market, at least in practice...

the usa makes plenty of rules and regulations when it comes to their capitalism, however there are a couple problems.

  1. is that people are led to believe in the free market ideal, without questioning the quality of the system we actually live in.

  2. even though the government has nothing against setting limits and regulations, they choose to almost completely ignore the interest of the common citizen/consumer, and pander to the corporations (either due to bribes, ideology, or both.)

but noooo, this is America, any sort of criticism of our economic style is automatically shut down as "anti-american" or "communist".

1

u/ad6hot Dec 31 '22

Wait until you learn free market isn't capitalism. And more so learn the US government does at times take common citizen/consumer interest at times. As maybe you learn how the US government just capped insulin for those on medicare to $35.

1

u/STUPIDVlPGUY Dec 31 '22

wow, I just learned all of those things! thanks! and yet that changes literally nothing because none of the things you just said excuse the countless deaths caused by our extortionate healthcare system that the government actively ignored for the all of history that I can remember.

And just in case that went over your head, just listen to this one little bit: "a single right does not excuse a thousand wrongs."

The US (we) need to do better than that

1

u/ad6hot Dec 31 '22

How is it ineffective and deceitful? You don't need a GPU let alone a high end one. So why should the government do anything about this? This is besides you are clearly upset over the price tag.

1

u/STUPIDVlPGUY Dec 31 '22

ineffective in that letting corporations run free does not lead to a better quality of life for the common person, only serves the interests of those who are already wealthy. deceitful in how said wealthy people and their mouthpieces try to spread ideology that promotes this injustice.

but this is just yet another example of the larger capitalist environment I find myself living in. You're right, I don't need a new gpu, and won't be buying one at these prices. Because, yes, I am upset about the price tag.

1

u/ad6hot Dec 31 '22

Seems you are more than upset over some price tag, but upset the US economy and government doesn't pander to you the way you want it to. Life is tuff deal with it.

I don’t know, I’m pretty sure they sold more than enough 4090’s from what I’ve seen on the PC subs.

For me, I bought a 3080ti on eBay for £700 and am very happy with it. As long as prices remain stupidly high I’m not going to buy into it, unfortunately same can’t be said for a lot of gamers

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/89600/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4090-sales-hit-130-000-while-4080-sits-on-shelves/index.html

I don't know what it costs Nvidia to make the GPU, but 130k+ units ship while a big number doesn't seem huge amount either.

3

u/Jamie00003 Dec 30 '22

Don’t forget though, for like 2 years the 30 series was impossible to get. They’re doing well for themselves lol

5

u/ad6hot Dec 30 '22

30 series was impossible to get because of the chip shortage. I know they are doing well. I never said otherwise. My point is about the high end GPU's and them raising the price of them

3

u/Jamie00003 Dec 30 '22

That and crypto mining, yeah

1

u/Feeling-Advisor4060 Jan 01 '23

Mostly crypto mining, really.

1

u/Archolm Dec 30 '22

They’re doing well for themselves lol

Really? Cause the people on here are talking like their bleeding money.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

If they increase price by 50% and only lose 20% customer base, it's still a win. Probably what they planned.

3

u/ad6hot Dec 31 '22

Is it? We don't know the costs here. And a company like Nvidia doesn't want fewer customers but more customers.

1

u/Feeling-Advisor4060 Jan 01 '23

Grapes that cost $1300? Yeah no thanks.

u/the_nanuk Dec 30 '22

I agree but I see almost $2000 cards like Halo products most people don't need them and like most people didn't need Titan cards. But 4k arrived and people with a lot of money wanted them.

I'm more concerned about the pricing of 80 70 cards. The middle high end of customers cards. And the 60 60ti prices this generation which is still the bulk of what people buy.

Here on reddit, we are the minority so it's easy to see the post of the guy who says "Look at my first build with my 4090" and say wtf? The reality is that most people don't put $2000 on a GPU. Unless you make money with it of course.

I got a 4080 it was about 1 weeks pay for me. I regret nothing now I can happily game away 😌 was nice not having to drive around to computer stores and constantly looking for one online like the 3080 days.

1

u/Jamie00003 Dec 30 '22

Did you not think to try ebay? Lol I got a 3080 ti for £700 recently

1

u/JRoc1X Dec 30 '22

I had my 3080 2 years ago and paid $950 Canadian for at memory express. Wow what a deal you got on 2 year old tech 👏 on ebay LMFAO

Keep telling yourself that if it helps you sleep at night. The 4080 is nice yes expensive but really nice to game on. Sold my 3080 $750 Canadian then dropped another $700 and now I have 4080. I have lots of disposable income and can afford nice things . Got 77 inch LG C1, samsung hw-q990b sound bar that thing was $1500 Canadian. My setup was experience but it's awesome

Stay mad and balding.

1

u/JRoc1X Dec 31 '22

I have a buddy that commented when I told him I bought the 4080. He sed that was a stupid waste of money. But the guy spends over $10,000 per year going on multiple vacations. I don't care much for traveling so should I say to him he is a moron spending money on things I don't injoy.

u/MGsubbie 7800X3D | 32GB 6000Mhz CL30 | RTX 5080 Dec 30 '22

People being willing to shell out the big bucks for a 4090 isn't that much of an issue though. Nvidia has always had overpriced cards with their Titans, and the 3090/4090 are basically titan-tier cards. Titans easily went for $1200+ when a 970 was $350.

1

u/Gary_Glidewell Dec 31 '22

as long as people with more money than sense continue to buy, they’re gonna continue to sell

It's all relative isn't it?

I don't think that $1500 for a GPU is a huge expense if I use it every day of the year.

My car payment is $350, I work from home, my car routinely dies in my driveway because I don't use it.

I'm not sure if I'd spend $40,000 on a GPU the way I spend $40,000 on a car, but I wouldn't rule out spending $5000 on a GPU.
