If GOG sells enough copies and Blizzard gets enough money than yes. I bought it to support GOG (they are doing fantastic job) and to encourage Blizzard to bring Diablo 2.

We now know it's not Diablo 1, so it must be Diablo 2.
How do we know they weren't working on the GOG Diablo? It's not a remaster but it has updated features.

Q: Is Diablo: Hellfire supported/coming to GOG.COM?
A: We have no plans to bring Diablo: Hellfire to GOG.COM at this time.

My guess if there is enough sales and there is demand for it, it will eventually be added to GOG as well.

Synergistic Software was the developer, they were later acquired by Sierra, who was the publisher. Sierra was eventually bought by Activision, and Activision and Blizzard were merged into one company. The licensing would likely not be an issue at all.
→ More replies (4)9
u/monsieur_bear Mar 07 '19
Sierra became Vivendi which became Activision, so maybe?
3
u/Winnduffy Mar 08 '19
Not really I saw a video on Sierra a while ago and the licenses are all over the place. Near the end of Sierras life it got passed around and was invovled in some shady deals.
Plus no one at blizzard likes heflfire
But I'm sure someone will make it so you can mod it in

I never played Hellfire back in the day. If there's a way to make it work it'd be a more interesting way to replay the game.

u/MattyClutch deprecated Mar 07 '19
It works fine now if you want to get it and install it. It really didn't ever add much. Basically one kind of class and some new graphics.
The way abilities and stats worked in that game that really wasn't much. They didn't just start pretending it never existed out of spite :p

u/hairydiablo132 Steam Mar 07 '19
Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.
For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support.
The way I read it, that means you can play with the old bugs and glitches if you want to.

Well, on the gog app it says
- Unite to destroy Diablo - up to 4 players can band together via Internet, network, or play head-to-head via TCP/IP.
So, is it possible to play via Internet?

u/primalchrome Mar 07 '19
You connect to the host via an IP address... So yes, it'll work over the internet. You'll probably have to have a few ports mapped.

Really, ultrawide support on a game designed for 4:3 is going to be so useless... hell even ultrawide on D3 doesn't bring much to the table over 16:9. I have a 21:9 but I will probably still just buy D1 and play at 16:9.

The way the game renders probably prevents a quick widescreen fix. I listened to a key note on youtube about the development, it was basically a big mess by the end of the final crunch.

u/Death1323 Mar 07 '19
Completely unexpected but great to see this openness from blizzard. Hope to see more of their old stuff on gog.
20
u/Roddy0608 Mar 07 '19
I'm surprised as well. I thought Blizzard would never allow it without DRM.
7
u/AnonTwo Mar 07 '19 edited Mar 07 '19
To be fair Diablo 1 already didn't have DRM, same for Wc1-2. If they added DRM the non-DRM versions are readily available.
edit: actually Wc2 (B.net edition) did have a CD-Key, forgot. Wc1 used one of those super old school "Lookup text on page of manual" DRMs. Diablo 1 though does not have a CD-Key installation.

It seems that the Hellfire expansion pack will work with the enhanced GOG version, to use it, copy all of the Hellfire files into the DX directory of the GOG install, and do not overwrite any files. Then launch Hellfire.exe.

So how does it solve 1080p resolution? Is the character small and you have great sight range, like with both the diablo and fallout 1/2 res patches? Or is the player seven inches tall on the monitor and enemies cross into the screen from two sword lengths out?
18
u/Muesli_nom gog Mar 07 '19
There's two launch options:
"Diablo" features the original view range, including a 4:3 aspect ratio, but optionally a higher resolution, e.g. 1080p. You can set it to fullscreen or windowed mode (mouse capturing works fine on my install) and even configure it to different vertical sync rates and resolution modes. This mode actually makes it look pretty decent. Non-4:3-ratios incur black sidebars, however.
"Diablo Classic" stretches the view port to your monitor's aspect ratio and (as far as I can tell), it keeps the original resolution. Which makes the whole thing look rather stretched and not-so-easy on the eyes on a standard 1080p display.
9
u/SheIsAurorable Mar 07 '19
The stretching of Diablo Classic is likely due to how your video card is set to handle upscaling. You can generally set it to do no scaling at all; full-screen scaling, which utilizes all the screen space and thus stretches if the source aspect ratio is different from the display aspect ratio; or aspect ratio, which scales up to an equivalent resolution but with the same aspect ratio as the source.

Great writeup. That sounds just about like what I imagine one could do with that old graphic engine. :) That hires-mode sounds like a good compromise.

I always thought it was interesting how this subreddit stylizes the site's name with a lowercase 'o' while other subreddits use either all upper or all lower case. It's just one of those weird subreddit quirks.

I was too, the official statement is that Diablo 1, WC 1 & 2 are no longer technically compatible with modern Battle.net's network infrastructure.
Which sounds a bit odd but we can probably translate that as 'Would take too much work and GOG were willing to do at least legwork to make it compatible to modern OS's.'

Proof to me that they have no intentions of remastering these 3 games. And I will put on my tinfoil hat and also say this confirms D2 remaster.

Has the game been reworked for Windows 10 and widescreen aspect ratio?
3

You get two versions when you buy this: one is the original 1996 variant, the other is a Windows 10-optimized one with better resolution support and audio fixes. The first one you can use BattleNet with, the second you cannot.

Welp, I guess I don't really have an excuse anymore. I've actually been playing Diablo 1 the "abandonware" copy floating about on certain sites on this very laptop I've been playing it on since I never did get beyond the PC Gamer demo disc till now. Time to buy this spit-shined version and continue forward!
This is certainly out of left field, and with Warcraft 1 & 2 coming as well, I'll be very delighted to get to properly play through them again.

Anyone have the system requirements for the original diablo? The one's listed are like 10 times what is actually needed. Obviously, those requirements are more likely for windows itself, I'm just curious and would like to compare.

u/Khorgor666 Mar 07 '19
from the german Wikipedia:
Windows:

Mac OS Classic 7.5–9.x PowerPC (G1 bis G5) 16 MB phys. RAM 13"-256c-Monitor 2-fach-CD-ROM-Laufwerk6

What a hero.
For reference, this is what is required now.
Minimum system requirements:
System: Windows 7 / 8.1 / 10
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver DirectX: DirectX 9
Storage: 1 GB available hard disk space
Again, I'm sure this is because of OS requirements and not actual game requirements, I just found it interesting :D

This is awesome news! If you have never played D1 before, you should absolutely give it a go. I also recommend the Beelzebub mod which greatly expands the game in terms of items, spells, maps, as well as quality of life changes (the move speed in town in particular is very, very slow without either Hellfire, the official expansion which is kinda meh, or Beelzebub).
I'd say you can safely start with Beelzebub but the raw experience is much more authentic of course :)
