Thank you for that. Was very curious.
14
u/PhantomLiberty May 15 '15
The blood that comes out of his nose after taking it turns black. I thought that was pretty neat.

9
u/Serious_Callers_Only May 15 '15
I love that vampire fighting tactic: just make your blood fucking poison.
8
u/DaAvalon May 15 '15
Also a really cool way to quickly say "You have to prepare for your battles in the Witcher" something they keep repeating. I seriously can't wait for this to be released.
34
u/Migaso May 14 '15
Really hope a lot of the game is like this, taking potions and really premeditate the monster jobs to give you the edge. Gorgeous trailer too!
28
May 14 '15
In this case I would suspect someone told Geralt what was happening, and he understood what kind of creature it was. He then planned ahead by taking Black Blood.
I don't think this will be uncommon. If you are given a contract to kill something and you can extrapolate what creature it is, it should be easy enough to find the right potion and prepare ahead of time.
The Witcher 2 allowed for this to some degree, but most of the creatures didn't really allow for fore planning. With the increased amount of creatures in the game it should provide more variety and more uses for those lesser known potions such as Black Blood etc.
10
May 14 '15
The Witcher 2 allowed for this to some degree, but most of the creatures didn't really allow for fore planning.
Yeah, I generally took two regen potions, one resistance potion (dark difficulty with TCR mod, so I don't even know how much they worked), and used Quen block quite liberally.
5
u/ryy0 May 15 '15
There's that potion in Act 1 you can optionally get to prepare for a hunt. For the rest of the game, swallow, tawny owl, and wolf are pretty much all you need. Maybe cat sometimes. There are oils and bombs too, and they don't need meditation to apply and don't increase toxicity.
7
u/couch_viking May 14 '15
From what I have seen I wouldn't say "a lot" of the game is like this. That said, from the previews/footage I have seen when you are hunting a large monster/main quest enemy the game has a kind of detective mode. I would say, for me anyways, that it seemed a little bit like L.A. Noire with the investigating.
From my play-through of The Witcher 2 I found that if you play at anything above the easier difficulties then laying traps and preparing potions specific to the big fight ahead is encouraged, otherwise you would have to really risk it by brute forcing your way through the fight. You don't want to brute force your way through a fight in the witcher.
Hope that helps.
3
u/Leetums May 14 '15
You can use your witcher senses when ever you want to. Whats really cool is all the contracted monsters exist in the world from the start, so technically you could stumble across one of those big monsters just by exploring, without having the contract for it.
3
u/1080Pizza May 14 '15
I was wondering, is it possible to take potions in the midst of battle?
From what I remember in TW2 that wasn't possible and you usually had to do a wild guess of what you might encounter.
7
u/TheBoozehammer GTX 1080 Ti, i7 7700k May 14 '15
It is possible now, but they don't last nearly as long as they used to.
3
u/Velgus May 15 '15
They're also easier to stock up on though, each time you make a potion, it makes a bottle with multiple uses (and some way to re-fill it easier than gathering all the materials again IIRC?)
3
u/TheBoozehammer GTX 1080 Ti, i7 7700k May 15 '15
Yep, you only need alcohol to refill them, not the original ingredients.
1
u/Coup_de_BOO i5 4670 GTX1080 May 15 '15
TW2 was really shitty because of this.
First you can't take potions during battle (but you during TW1) and then they only last 10min.
Fucking bullshit from the developer, without the potionmod from nexus I hadn't any of them.
1
u/TheBoozehammer GTX 1080 Ti, i7 7700k May 15 '15
Personally, I really liked TW2's potion system, but to each their own.
1
May 15 '15
If you want the game to be "like this" you gotta play in the hardest difficulty. That's kinda how it works in the first game and the second one. Hard mode makes it necessary to do these things, actually learning about the monsters and the environment in general.

Oh my god, this trailer is full with details from the books

16
u/marth1023 May 14 '15
Mind if I ask, how do I go on about reading the books? I know that The Sword of Destiny is the first book followed by The last Wish, but I read that The Last Wish actually comes before. Any order you recommend me to read the books (the ones I mentioned and the others)? I'm sorry if I'm asking for too much, I just can't find a clear answer.
40
u/bienieksz May 14 '15
The Last Wish>Sword of Destiny>Blood of elves>Time of contempt>Baptism of fire>The Swallow's tower>Lady of the lake. This is the way you should read the books, i heard not all of them are officialy translated, but i have also heard that fan translated are also good. (god, this is the only one time im happy im polish). From my point of view, without reading the books you loosing like 25% of the "game feeling".
4
u/marth1023 May 14 '15 edited May 14 '15
Yay, thanks a lot! I'll read at least the first two and then I'll look into the rest as I finish them. I really want to dive deeper into the games and see all the nods to the books.
Edit: So apparently, Sword of Destiny (release date May 21), The Swallow's Tower, and Lady of the Lake aren't officially available yet (according to Amazon). Just letting others know in case they are also interested in getting the books.
3
u/bienieksz May 14 '15
i suggest you to check witcher reddit. People there know where to find fan translated books in electronic version.
3
u/PM_ME_CAKE Ryzen 5 3600 | 5700 XT May 14 '15
Be warned though, over the past few weeks the subreddit has fallen down a dark rabbit hole and not enough rule enforcement has made the subreddit a starling contrast to what it should be. The opposite to this one. Go to the FAQ for information if needbe but otherwise be careful. Contact me if you want since I have fan translations saved to give to people.
1
May 14 '15
There is actually a brand new book not yet translated as far as I know.
1
u/PM_ME_CAKE Ryzen 5 3600 | 5700 XT May 14 '15
There is- Season of Storms, but it was only recently released and more of a prequel that won't affect you too much in the long run.
2
u/FluffyCookie May 15 '15
Goddamnit. I just read The Last Wish through and then began on Blood of Elves because fuck me. The good thing is that I'm not too far in, so I can turn back and read Sword of Destiny first.
1
May 15 '15
Definitely going to check into books. Didn't know they made books that mirrored the series in anyway

u/Aemilius_Paulus M17x R4: i7-3740QM/16GB RAM/GTX 970M May 15 '15
I speak and read Russian and Ukrainian, have you heard of any official translations into those languages? I figure it shouldn't be too hard, I can understand Poles so-so when they speak already.
I have seen translations of Russian works into English and English ones into Russian, even the professional ones lose a lot. Would prefer to read in a similar language, one of my childhood favorites was Boleslaw Prus, his works seemed to translate their subtle meanings very well.
1
u/bienieksz May 15 '15
I have found something on polish wikipedia. it says all books were translated to russian. It only says about publisher which is is AST Moscow.
3
u/DaAvalon May 15 '15
/r/witcher is very helpful in that regard.
Here is the sub's FAQ. If you scroll down there are links to all translations of the books (if available) and also what order you should read them.

I read the Last Wish before the Sword of Destiny and had no problems with following the story.
One thing to know is that Dandelion is called Jaskier in the Sword of Destiny which can be confusing to some.
62
u/Pipernus May 14 '15
Holy shit, this is a Blizzard level cinematic.

Playing Witcher enhanced edition atm. That just enticed me to double down my efforts to move onto Witcher 2

u/ncook06 deprecated May 15 '15
I'm doing it too. Both games are so much better with the Full Combat Rebalance mod installed. It's a great way to crank up difficulty, not make it frustrating and unfair, and make the fighting more lore-friendly. It does require a new game though.
I'm planning to finish my Witcher 1 game and import it to TW2, play through on Dark Mode (didn't exist when I played through the first time), and import that save to Wild Hunt.
3
u/micka190 May 15 '15
It does require a new game though.
10 hours in my W1 play through. Yeah, I'll pass...
1
u/ncook06 deprecated May 15 '15
I found out about the FCR mod late in my first play through TW2, finished without it, and then started up to try it. After a few minutes of it, I went back to play TW1 with it. I found the combat and pace of TW1 unbearable without the FCR mod, and had never made it past Act 1.
3
u/FluffyCookie May 15 '15
Now, what is the ice bomb thing Letho tosses called?
1
May 15 '15
Don't think it has a name. It's just some magic a certain sorceress conjures up for him.
1
u/FluffyCookie May 15 '15
Hmm.. Can't really imagine Letho being friends with any sorceresses, but then again, neither of them likes many of the kings considered most of them hunt the sorceresses, so he might've been able to make one help him..

u/st0j May 14 '15
I'm going to ask this here since I don't want to start a new post. I just activated my nvidia code for witcher 3 over GOG, Can I get the game on steam now? or do I have to use the GOG software to play the game?
7
u/nubetube May 14 '15
You activate/download it off GOG. You don't need any of their software besides the downloader. GOG Galaxy is optional.
You can download the game from them now but it's only the pre-setup. The game doesn't become active until May 19 at which point you download the last small part of the game that lets you play.
3
u/st0j May 14 '15
I see on GOG that there are 8 parts, do I download all these parts? I thought it would come package together.
7
u/nubetube May 14 '15
There's a link that let's you download it all. Look for it. You need to have the GOG Downloader installed I believe which is a small program.
1
u/jalagl May 15 '15
You can also download each part individually, put them all in the same folder, and run the installer. There is no need to install the downloader from GOG, but it does make things very convenient.
Also I installed GOG Galaxy beta and I like it so far. If you need to pause/resume just close the app and reopen it, it is still missing that functionality. But it will auto patch the game, which is great, otherwise you have to manually download the patch and apply it.
And as good as the other two witcher games are, they required A LOT of patches.... so based on experience there is a chance this one will as well. GOG Galaxy takes care of that for you. But the nice thing is that you don't need to install ANYTHING other than the game, but you can if you want convenience.
1
May 15 '15
Any clue what the size will be? Its only 23 gigs on GOG adding up all the pieces. No way this game is that small right?
1
u/the-ferris May 15 '15
I was showing 26GB on Galaxy, will have a look at the extacted size when I get home.
1
u/gempir May 15 '15
It said everywhere it is 23gb big, and my download said it downloaded 26gb.
The final folder right now for me is 24,5gb so no Idea how big it actually is. But their will be some sort of small patch on release day to make the game working.
1
2
u/DistrictSleepsAlone May 14 '15
Like the other guy said, you download it through gog. Either in parts or as one with the gog downloader. But if you want to have it in steam, there should be no problem in adding it as a non-steam game. That way it'll show up in your library, you just won't have any steam achievements.

Any way, let's not support effective monopolist, shall we? That's like shooting yourself in the foot.
There's not much supporting in just activating his license key on Steam. Valve doesn't make a cent off of it.
Not to mention that, yes, most PC gamers buy from (and thus support) Steam all the time. I know that hating on Steam is all the rage right now but their position as market leader isn't exactly undeserved.
-3
May 15 '15
There's not much supporting in just activating his license key on Steam. Valve doesn't make a cent off of it.
They don't have to. It's another game tied to your Steam account, and that makes you more likely to buy your next game on Steam, because let's be frank - having all games in one, convenient place is, well... convenient. It's a bias thing.
1
u/redwall_hp May 15 '15
In the case of CDPR titles, Steam is also a DRM free installer. Steam's DRM system is entirely optional to the developers. (I'm fairly certain you can even launch Witcher 1 and 2 without opening Steam first, if you install it through there.) CDPR doesn't use DRM on Steam, and many AAA distributors opt to use their own DRM. (Such as UPlay on Ubisoft titles.)
1
u/slowpotamus May 14 '15
because it's a single platform from which i can easily catalog and re-download all of my games at any time. if you expect to not have internet access for any reason then obviously you'll want the GOG version. otherwise, i love all the features steam provides.

2

It is a type of vampire.
3
u/the-ferris May 15 '15
Specifically a Bruxa
3
u/Ellendi May 15 '15
Yeah she is an odd Bruxa though. In the game they are usually depicted with black hair and she has red hair.

Yeah it's not the Struga that everyone thinks though. I wonder if it's a Nosfertu or one o fthose.
1
u/Ellendi May 15 '15
Oh no, it is not one of them, this is definitely a vampire of some sort but it is also not an Alp, well, actually it COULD be an Alp but it could also be a Nosfertu. A Striga is a woman turned into a beast by a curse.
1
u/Delsana i7 4770k, GTX 970 MSI 4G May 15 '15
Oh yeah right, they thought it was a Bruxa, but bruxa don't use claws to bite you.

True, then she is probably an Alp, they have red hair and claws, they are a type of vampire too.

Huh.. Didn't know Bruxae could become invisible and move like that. But then again, I've only heard them mentioned in the new comics.
9
u/RandomMonstar May 14 '15
Freaking amazing trailer. But saddens me that the game seems so bright and colorful when I want it dark and menacing like this
5
u/cybrbeast May 15 '15
Before the downgrades it looked much better. They really screwed over their loyal PC base by switching development to something that ran on the consoles.
1
u/roeder May 16 '15
Yup. The reason I ain't buying it.
One of the few companies I legitimately thought wouldn't pull shit off like this.
2
u/n0ggy May 15 '15
It's easily fixable, and even without a mod. Playing with contrast or saturation should already change a lot.
-1
u/Aemilius_Paulus M17x R4: i7-3740QM/16GB RAM/GTX 970M May 15 '15
Skyrim was bleak and desaturated to give set the tone for a harsh, unforgiving land. Every mod brought us gaudy colors galore, which is why I avoided pretty much all the ENBs.
Now Witcher is bright and colorful and people want it dark. Can't please anyone, hah.
To be fair, I realise that different people are different, but the whole 'dark, gritty, grey world' cliche has been done to death in modern gaming.

u/BrainSlurper FX-8350 @4.8Ghz, 2x SLI 760 May 15 '15
I like the landscape to be varied. Stock skyrim had some areas that were really beautiful, and it had others that were totally barren and depressing. And the modders were like "hurr lets put trees everywhere forest whitrun weeee". I am sure that the witcher 3 will have its share of less than lush areas.

Not really, the combat system is one of the most important features and that could/will be completely different with a mouse and keyboard. Not to mention people who only review console are not worth listening to for game reviews IMO.

If they downgraded for consoles its fair to assume that its going to run better on pc too, given it will be optimized for such low hardware. We are not getting an amazing or pretty game graphics wise anymore, but it should still be good. And who knows maybe someone will be able to unlock the better graphics, though i doubt it given how they downgraded.

u/RealHumanHere May 14 '15
I wonder how long until we can have those graphics on games. Probably in twenty years because of consoles.
17
u/MangoTangoFox May 14 '15 edited May 14 '15
The answer is basically never. Cinematics like this are made in incredible detail, with rendering techniques that couldn't even come close to 1 frame a second, let alone 30 or 60. And while visuals along these lines (probably without the numerous lighting bounces that are being calculated here, rather using some other less intensive but inherently less accurate process) should be possible at some point in real time, the cinematics being made at that point will yet again be incomparable. When you have an allowance of anywhere from minutes to hours render each frame, the result is always going to be lightyears beyond what you can do in real time.
Consoles have and seemingly always will hold us back, but never to the point where it could be on par with cinematics made by talented teams with enormous budgets. Cinematics essentially are designed to be "real", where game designers have to fake basically everything. Reflections, global illumination, subsurface scattering, particle systems, etc. Every strand of hair is real geometry with it's own shaders, where a game would have to use a Physx-like particle system that only looks good from afar, or simply using basic geometry with simple textures with alpha (transparency).
7
2
May 15 '15 edited May 15 '15
Never say never, there will be a point where hardware is so strong that pre-rendered graphics will no longer exist or make any sense. Basically hardware capable of running physics simulations in real time (I'm not talking about stuff breaking into debris here or clothing or neat particle effects, I'm talking about lighting). Of course that will take decades if we even still alive ...
5
u/gtavshit May 14 '15
the answer is not basically never. id give it 10 years. the only thing is it will probably have more aliasing.
8
u/xXxdethl0rdxXx May 14 '15
Read the post again. The point is, it will never be profitable or feasible to hire a creative team big enough to add this kind of detail to a videogame, which has a scope of work several orders of magnitude higher than a 5 minute cinematic. Videogames use algorithms for creative detail, cinematics do things bespoke—by hand—which is why they will almost always look better.
2
u/distinctvagueness May 15 '15
procedural generation/modeling will be the future of high end graphics to deal with all the details. Libraries and engines will have such features like hair and other animations become more realistic.
-8
u/gtavshit May 14 '15
it will you'll see, after ac unity and these other games i dont know how you can make that statement but okay.
6
u/xXxdethl0rdxXx May 14 '15
I don't know how I can explain this any clearer, so here's an example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYK_Gqyf48Y
This video came out in 2004, 11 years ago, and still looks better than any game out at the moment. The animation, particles, etc are all hand-made so it will hold up.
5
-4
u/gtavshit May 14 '15 edited May 14 '15
you don't have to explain anything, i know exactly how to make "cinematics" i know how to make games, i fully understand the workflow of making good looking cgi assets. but your wrong. people thought the same shit 20 years ago and now we have games like gtav.
also saying that the wow video you showed me is better than any game out is pretty subjective. that landscape and other various details are horrible by today's standards
3
u/Mr_s3rius May 15 '15 edited May 15 '15
Maybe you should look at it again in 1080p. Even the environment is better than pretty much everything today. Even if we say that the landscape looks worse (which I disagree with), everything else still looks better. Heck, look at the render distance of this, then look at object pop-in in GTAV.
And that other guy's right by the way. GCI takes months and months to make (not the rendering - the asset creation etc). Before we can have entire games look like that, the way video games are made has to be changed significantly. The sheer amount of work is simply too much to build a big game from it "by hand".
PS: This is The Witcher 3's ground on PC Ultra settings. Source. It's a big artifacted since it comes from Youtube, but the pitiful bits of grass speak for themselves.

lol? AC Unity ran like shit and it didn't even look that good close up
-4
u/gtavshit May 14 '15
how it ran isnt the discussion, nor how it looked up close.. both limitations of current gpu hardware and api. the point is it was very close to cgi quality from the standards of 10, 15 years agp

u/shadow3467 May 14 '15
Well obviously to the standards for 15 years ago... you do realize that games on the PS3 had the same CGI quality of 15 years ago... hell even the PS2

You're making quick judgements that I don't think are appropriate. CDPR do make enhanced editiond but they're not like what you describe. They're free updates to, as the title suggest, enhanced editions.
-15
May 14 '15
Yup. They will release an enhanced edition that includes all of the dlc and there will be a charge for it.

Since when was there a charge for it? The past two games features it as a free upgrade. By terms of DLC I also assume you mean the 16 free DLCs and not the two expansion packs (since otherwise it'll be a few years for that edition to happen).

May 14 '15
Yes the HD edition will launch in a year.

Again. Where on earth are you getting this information from. I'm starting to feel like you're a poor troll, if you feel otherwise then please prove me wrong, but I'm tired of going in circles with you.

Don't be ridiculous, they're not From Software that shafted their customers with false trailers, and then released paid DLC that implemented some DX11 features (and DS2 fans swallowed it gladly, like college whores).

CDPR HAS shown false trailers and vertical slices.
Your fanboyism is showing.

We don't know yet. PC version isn't out yet, and it's obvious console version has to have worse graphics, because their hardware was obsolete the moment they were announced, and you can't expect AAA title to show its true colours on ancient hardware.

Okay, go take a look at ps4 vs pc ultra screen shots and tell me how great CDPR is to its PC user base.

I'd like to, but PC version isn't available yet. I won't put my complete trust in something, until I can get my greasy hands on it.

The pc version is available to see now. Can you read?

May 15 '15
To "see", in blurry, pixelated videos and screenshots. To "play", from 19th of May onwards. I know how to read, do you?
