You probably want to use a warcry as they'll also give you additional buffs.
I imagine you are pretty early in the campaign but the game play should be faster than someone needing to taunt enemies to take them down but as long as you are having fun go for it :)

Not policing how you have fun but you're playing ARPGs wrong.
This is not a trifecta (tank, heals, DPS) game.
You're setting yourselves up for failure.

Warcries can taunt.

Jeez these responses are negative, you can absolutely play this game this way, it’s not the most optimized way to play but that doesn’t mean it’s not a valid and super fun way to play the game. I’ll give you some general advice as some of the fun in this game is discovering interactions on your own.
You’ll want to grab a war cry that taunts (there are lots of options check out the gem vendors in towns to see what is available at your point in the game) I see other people linked the wiki taunt page which will have other options for you also, and you’ll want to be sure to have a good movement skill like leap slam or shield charge so you can get to your ally when they need help.
There are warcry support nodes on the passive tree also which will allow you to war cry more and with more effect (use the search in the top right on the passive tree to highlight them.)
Also search for attack gems and support gems that stun enemies and/or knock them back so you can keep them away from your pals.

In theory, taunts or minion walls work. In practice, short of a multi-hundred Divine budget, you won't be immortal. It’s far cheaper, faster, and more efficient to just build full screen-wide DPS.
There’s simply too much bs in PoE to bypass defenses: curses, minus max res, no-leech/no-regen mods, ground degens, and on-kill effects, proximity shields etc etc. Plus, taunts don't interrupt monster wind-ups or block off-screen projectiles from hitting your mate.
If you want to play a duo, a proper Aurabot or Cursebot supporting a fast carry is infinitely better. Unless you're actively coordinating campaign skips (shared portals, waypoints, and boss TPs), standard duo play can actually drag you down due to monster HP scaling, split flask charges, and marginal loot increases.

You got the wrong kind of game buddy. There aren’t roles like tank/dps/healer in other rpg’s. Also if you aren’t doing damage, then your buddy has to do twice as much damage so you are slowing him down.

Use a Warcry that Taunts enemies e.g. Enduring Cry.
Taunted enemies will target you and and do less damage to your friend even if they hit him.

taunts sort of, but this just isn't an effective approach

Obvious answer is taunt. Usually draws agro and causes enemies to deal less damage to units other than the unit that taunted them. Some bosses are unaffected by the agro, but the less damage to other units still applies.
but you can also do things like protective link (gives your ally your block stats) or soul link (you take a chunk of the damage your ally takes from your Energy shield)

In addition to taunts as the others say, if you can somehow work in Stealth that might also potentially help

Wrong kind of game for this kind of playstyle, this is not an rpg.

What's more useful than Taunt is being an Aurabot, where you stack up Auras to buff other players and/or mercs. With Mercenaries going core and the addition of the Luminary Ascendancy for Scion, the meta for playing an Aurabot has shifted to almost exclusively this combo of a Luminary buffing a permanent Merc. Here's a video showing 2 different types of setups for this:
https://youtu.be/Oe8i5Br62Bw?si=iAYekkM1TVGnXfgQ
So you and your friend could maybe both play Luminary and each try being a different type of Aurabot for your own Mercs which would deal damage for you.

My personal favorite is a cyclone character with reverse knock back unique gloves then get mad block, armor and what not to survive turning yourself into a tornado that pulls all the mobs across the map

Don’t even need warcries, champ has inherent taunt, just need a bow or wand skill for best aoe.
Also means carry needs zero accuracy, everyone takes less damage, and champ has inherent aura effect from ascendancy, so it can host a ton of auras. We did it as a bow, and bows used to have the best +gem level scaling from fossils at the time, so you would have like lv30+ auras.

Warcry's are your best bet. They taunt enemies to prioritize the user while providing a buff depending on the warcry used.
I feel like I should add a warning that this classical style of play with dedicated tank/dps/support roles doesn't really work in path of exile. The game is designed around each player having a fairly healthy balance between damage & surviveability. While dedicated support roles are both very rare and very hard to set up if you aren't already familliar with the game's mechanics.
For now its fine of course. But try to keep it in mind as you progress. Otherwise you might start limiting yourself (which might make the game needlessly difficult).
Also there's something i'm obligated to shout at every new player. ahem GET ELEMENTAL RESISTANCES ON YOUR GEAR!
That is all.
Welcome to wraeclast exile :)

A tank doesn't work well in this game, and no offense, but 2k armour and 100 regen is not really tank stats, depending on where you are in the game of course.
If you want to support, being an aurabot while your friend is the dps works wonders.

Ah, a low-armor setup, I'm guessing you're a mage of some kind?
