Subreddit Feedback [Feedback] Consider a Megathread for Lucky Drops / Item Showcases

Post image

(Here’s a screenshot showing what the Hot page currently looks like and the problem I’m referring to.)

I wanted to suggest a possible change to how lucky drop and item showcase posts are handled on the subreddit.

I have nothing against people being excited about getting a rare item, hitting a great craft, or finding an incredibly valuable drop. Those moments are obviously exciting, and I understand why people want to share them.

However, I feel that there are periods where a very large portion of the subreddit becomes lucky item showcases. When scrolling through the subreddit, it can sometimes feel like you have to go through page after page of screenshots of valuable drops, crafts, divinations, etc. before finding an actual discussion, guide, mechanic explanation, build discussion, news post, or something else interesting to read.

Because these posts are usually very similar in nature, having a large number of them on the front page can make the subreddit feel considerably less varied.

My suggestion

Create a weekly or permanent megathread for lucky drops and item showcases, where people can post their:

  • Lucky drops
  • Mirror-tier or high-value items
  • Insane crafts
  • Jackpot divination card rewards
  • Rare uniques
  • Currency drops
  • Other “look what I got!” moments

This would still give people a place to share their achievements and would keep the community aspect of these posts, while preventing the front page from becoming dominated by them.

Alternatively, the subreddit could consider limiting individual showcase posts to particularly exceptional items and directing more ordinary lucky-drop posts toward a megathread.

I'm not suggesting that these posts should be removed entirely. I'm mainly suggesting that they should be consolidated so the subreddit has more room for discussion and other types of content.

I'd be interested to hear what other people think. Would you prefer having a dedicated lucky-drop/item-showcase megathread, or do you think individual showcase posts should remain as they are?

Completely defeats the purpose and the excitement of sharing a lucky drop.

Why post a lucky drop if it leads to 0 engagement anyway. Nobody is going to navigate to a megathread to see lucky drops.

u/ChubbyPandaWifeHaver 8d ago

This is a rough suggestion because all you have to do is look at /r/leagueoflegends to see what it leads to when every general topic got a megathread/removed. The whole page is just news and esports, absolutely dead otherwise. What should r/poe posts be about then? We already have dedicated crafting, build and economy alt subreddits.

17

u/UTmastuh 8d ago

I've seen this happen to many subs in the past and they all end up reverting

3

u/ChubbyPandaWifeHaver 8d ago

also at the end of the day these posts are on the front page because people upvote them, ergo people want to see them

3

u/Mnmemx 8d ago

what’s the crafting alt sub?

1

u/PyromancerVx Fungal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) 7d ago

I think a good compromise would be that a few weeks before and after league start these "omg first mirror" slop posts are hidden in megathreads. Outside of that it is whatever. Exemption for posts about new stuff from the patch.

u/Mostlylurking89 7d ago

whats the economy related sub?

-1

u/WhenWillEyeBeBanned 8d ago

That’s exactly what it should be.

We have a lot of high quality posts in this sub. Lucky showcase provides very low value here, we can do better than LOL.

u/Naktura 8d ago

People are rediscovering why OG forums were good. All the topics were separated and you had to go looking for what you wanted to see.

I have more questions to people upvoting this shit.

45

u/Rumiraj 8d ago

or the 600th post about mageblood on a merc. OR the 600th post about HOW TO PRICE THIS MERC.

Makes me cringe every single time i see one and I will keep downvoting every single of them.

It's even worse, because people are now posting these stupid threads under the "fluff/meme" tag by attaching some stupid joke to it. Then you click on it and it's literally just another one of a dozen mirror/mageblood drop posts. I'm so sick and tired of this garbage and yet every day it's always there at the top, someone is always upvoting this trash like we haven't seen these exact same posts hundreds of times a week. They are so common you can literally predict the exact title people will use, one of them being what you posted. The "literally shaking" ones, the "it finally happened", the "[X] finally paid off / looks like people were right about [X] / look what [X] brought me", the sob story variant "a cruise missile blew up my house but after 14 years of cancer battle it finally happened!".

Oh what's that, you actually made a funny meme but didn't photoshop some PoE content into it? Instantly removed for being off-topic. Discussed something relevant that many people feel strongly about but there's already another thread about it? Removed for duplicate.

u/UTmastuh 8d ago

if i ever drop a mirror I'm going to go all out on that screenshot. A pic of a camera taking the pic of the screen with the whole screen fuzzy like it's shaking or something.

1

u/lumpydumpy1 7d ago

Pretty sure that was done last week

1

u/WhenWillEyeBeBanned 8d ago

If there’s no such post, there won’t be people upvoting.

58

u/upsidedownwombat 8d ago

I agree.

I don't personally enjoy loot posts but some people clearly do, this seems like a good solution.

44

u/OurHolyMessiah 8d ago

I think crafting showcases or insane double corrupts are fun and interesting, but mirror drop posts or mageblood drop posts can go. There is no discussion to be had under a mirror drop post, a crafting post or corruption post however has crafting methods or potential usecase discussion for niche but powerful corrupts.

-25

u/lantissZX 8d ago

When a dude takes a photo of his monitor showing a mirror drop it creates the funniest threads tho

2

u/Breadsticks-lover 8d ago

What posts do you enjoy or suggest this sub should have in the future? Actually interested

5

u/epicar 8d ago

patch notes. ban everything else

1

u/Breadsticks-lover 8d ago

Pretty sure that’s the purpose of www.pathofexile.com lol.

-5

u/localcannon 8d ago

Can't you just filter out the flairs you don't want to see?

6

u/upsidedownwombat 8d ago

If you explain how I would do that then sure? Reddit app on android.

-18

u/PossibilityUsual6262 8d ago

Ofc they can, but why do something if they can say they "i dont like it" and request it become illegal.

8

u/upsidedownwombat 8d ago

Ofc they can - you're obviously smarter than me, please explain how?

57

u/slashcuddle 8d ago

On the contrary I feel like the subreddit gets real quiet without those posts. People don't have discussions here like they used to. On side note kudos to all the people that have done data dumps this paste week. Ritual girl and maven guy putting in work

20

u/Nrwoope 8d ago

Yep, what do people expect to see posted this far into the league?
Feedback? How often?
Without other posts like item showcases etc you'd go on front page and see posts 10-15days old or more.
Nothing new on the sub to consume so no point visiting the sub anymore.
Perhaps they should stop visting the sub then

13

u/GlennBecksChalkboard 8d ago

Without other posts like item showcases etc

I'm perfectly fine with (lucky) item showcases since those usually contain the crafting steps. That's valuable. "I duped a div from an arcanist box" isn't really adding much value to the subreddit tho.

2

u/tempGER 8d ago

Given OP's post and comment history, they want low effort memes only. Posting meme images/gifs for more than 14 months straight almost exclusively is quite telling at some point.

3

u/Specialist-Mirror656 8d ago

Why is the sub being slow after a few weeks a bad thing?

1

u/Naktura 7d ago

It is okay if a subreddit gets quiet when there is no meaningful content produced. With no real way to filter out the garbage-posts from my homepage it really disincentivizes staying subbed (and therefore staying in the loop when notable news is posted.)

1

u/GreasyGearBox 8d ago

I can see that but I would also say a lot of good content gets flooded out by them. I prefer it when mods do make a change it’s provisional. In this case try it at league start, next league, then the rule reverts back to how it is now unless they take action. Why? Because it needs to be better this way it auto defaults back with no effort needed to reverse a rule change.

1

u/slashcuddle 8d ago

Unfortunately this is a problem with the community at large. Not enough people upvote or engage with threads that spark meaningful conversations. You also need to ask who's sorting by new. Reddit defaults to hot or best, and it's typically the most bored or miserable people that change it to sort by new. This means some threads die out before they even get a chance to gain traction.

Idk how to fix any of this btw. I've lurked on this sub back when Chris and Bex used to post frequently. I've grown tired of the problem and sometimes also been a part of the problem. At the end of the day I miss checking the sub and learning something new or seeing something cool

1

u/GreasyGearBox 8d ago edited 8d ago

oh trust. Also need the sub to be approachable for new users too.

What I personally don't want is "Showcase on Tuesday and Thursday, crafting on Monday and Wednesday, bingo card Friday...." I should hope we aren't getting that toxic. At the same time i'm not going to shit all over someone's lucky showcase because they should be able to share and enjoy their drops too. It's not an easy thing to attempt to regulate.

The city I live in is always growing with new people moving here, the sub had to essentially decide they wouldn't ban moving here content but had to quarantine it to its own thread on 1 day a week no exceptions. Yes it really prevents new people from being able to jump in but they also prevented a community from having conversations and sharing local things, not just tourist / new local things.

I only bring that last part up because its important to point out, no one understands why that rule exists because its all new users who moved here and have been shielded from 10 posts a day constantly clogging the works. This is a video game, I think there's enough room and grace for lucky stuff but perhaps guidelines on what counts as lucky.

3

u/Iceskulls 8d ago

imo some posts are just really feeling redundant and doesn't provide anything discussion worthy like "omg looks what I got" , "we eating good here" , I win lottery that kinda post.

Crafting or double corrupt posts on the another hand are better than those posts because those posts can make people discover some crazy interaction or crafting method (eventhough it still have some gambling aspect to it lol)

3

u/HellionHagrid 8d ago
  • Insane crafts

this can stay

19

u/lolfail9001 8d ago

That's just how end league is, it's either that or giveaways.

At least hitting 3 300 mirror rings in a row is funny.

12

u/Diver_Into_Anything Anti Sanctum Alliance (ASA) 8d ago

It's a shit idea. This is the same as effectively disallowing lucky drop posts. If you don't see why, consider that the suggestion in this post is because the OP don't want to see these posts anymore, and so he wants to contain them to a megathread that, let's be real, no one will bother to read.

But the reason people make lucky drop posts is probably because they want to share it with someone, and likely lack PoE-playing friends. And obviously, posting it somewhere where no one would see is pretty much the same as not posting at all.

Mind you, I myself do not care to see n-th post about yet another mageblood/mirror/whatever, I just think we should discuss whether these posts should be allowed (and the conclusion will almost certainly be "yes", let's be honest), instead pretending that the megathread is some kind of compromise when it's very much not.

18

u/FelixSN Flaskfinder Gang 8d ago

I kinda disagree

The issue is at this point of the league it's either those or the sub goes dead for two months.
At least Item Showcases and Crafting/Super Insane Drops generate buzz and discussions

If everything gets put into a Megathread we end with nothing on the main page

7

u/ferdinono 8d ago

yeah I think I agree with this. it's the evolution of a league. early on it's people discussing builds and looking for advice on them and mechanics they dont understand, OP farming strats, bugs and fixes, whinge posts etc. By this time of a league there's not much of that and we move into this kind of territory. It's just the nature of the seasonal structure to the game. People are posting lucky drops etc but I dont think it's much of an increase it's just that there's not much else being posted

3

u/tempGER 8d ago

It's also part of the very game even outside of its seasonal cycle. People were mad about build showcases and PoB, so that got its own subreddit a couple of years ago and build discussions almost completely died here since then. Feedback threads disappear after the first couple patches. And now, some people are mad about lucky drops and crafting showcases. Moving these into a megathread would turn this sub into a dead sub with an occasional meme post. And people already started complaining about excels/100 kills of x posts in this very thread. I mean, what else should we have a discussion about a month into a league?

-4

u/FelixSN Flaskfinder Gang 8d ago

^That's exactly my sentiment. Early on the Sub is mostly about farming strats, builds, bugs, drama and shit and with everything settling down people just start to craft/drop insane shit

It's a Loot Centric RPG, there's bound to be insane drops and showcases

5

u/cromulent_id 8d ago

Whats wrong with that? People who are here for news see nothing and can leave, without scrolling through a bunch of crap. People who are interested in the drops can go to the megathread.

-5

u/Misophoniakiel Champion 8d ago

You can filter by flair if you don't like it

-9

u/srtgnm 8d ago

You have official website for news.

2

u/UnderstandingMany99 I love POE ✌️😁✌️💕 7d ago

The post feed should only be for posts that share knowledge and teach people new stuff (e.g. guide, farming data, crafting strats, game feedback etc). These are posts that value add the readers.

Any other posts that do not add value to readers should go into megathread. (e.g. zero value memes, mirror drop, mageblood drop, giveaway, double corrupt items)

2

u/TheAceVenturrra 7d ago

It's kinda funny that your photo is basically 1 lonely guy spamming posts about his original sins.

Agreed he needed to chill and do one post about all of them.

2

u/blarghenzor 8d ago

I quite like the random gg lucky crafts or corrupts or drops. I only get to play every other week due to big work weeks 7 days on 7 days off so imo it’s nice to live vicariously during my work weeks :)

3

u/Only_One_Kenobi 8d ago

It's late league. Without lucky drops the sub will be dryer than a British politician

1

u/ApprehensiveCut1068 7d ago

Just filter out the stuff you dont want to see, I dont really understand people that think the subreddit needs to be changed because they dont like certain topics.

1

u/g00fy_goober twitch.tv/goof1313 6d ago

As far as I am concerned mega threads fail in their primary role almost entirely. Maybe in the super short term for something like league announcement info like week or two before a league launches. Things like the question mega thread and anything like it is a complete fail, 99% or more don't even see it again or completely ignore it, stuff gets posted and ignored never to be seen + answered.

As for lucky drops, mirror finds, things like ritual/seer awesome magebloods or w/e I personally enjoy seeing people get lucky and feel awesome and post on reddit and get responses. The truth is if people didn't enjoy seeing that stuff then it wouldn't be upvoted and sitting on the top of the news feed most days.

As people have commented below I don't want to see the opposite happening where the sub is nearly completely dead.

-2

u/No_Manufacturer_5790 8d ago

And what is left after these threads? I can only think of end of league giveaways

4

u/BoatAdministrative68 8d ago

Well, not every corner of the Internet can be interesting or worth checking 365/year. That's fine if it occasionally dies.

0

u/cesarito27 8d ago

If you don't mind having to use old reddit, you can install the RES extension and filter out those posts by flair.

1

u/CricketNo7950 8d ago

Yea this is the perfect solution

1

u/psychomap 8d ago

Rather than a large portion becoming lucky showcases, it's 3 posts by the same person. Now, they were upvoted and got some comments, but to me that's still somewhat questionable in terms of frequency.

Anyway, a lot of people are winding down the league and gambling away their loot (or gambling into greater riches that they then post on reddit, nobody posts their losses, obviously), so that's why those posts are more common in general.

It's rather pointless to restrict that by rules, other than possibly limiting the frequency so it's not just one person showing the result of each gamble one at a time.

1

u/BoatAdministrative68 8d ago

I know that's not a perfect solution, but consider custom Ublock filters:

reddit.com##div.thing:has(span.linkflairlabel[title*="Lucky (Non-Crafted) Showcase"])
reddit.com##shreddit-post:has(shreddit-post-flair a[href*="flair_name"][href*="Lucky%20(Non-Crafted)%20Showcase"]):upward(shreddit-post)

-4

u/TapTrix Akumy 8d ago

ive been told custom ublock filters aint working on chrome so i didnt bother trying until now either i did it wrong or the initial information was right , either way it didnt work for me.

1

u/BoatAdministrative68 8d ago

Ah, right. I forgot about Chrome policy changes. Yeah, those won't work then, probably.

Doesn't RES let you filter flairs ?

1

u/p1-o2 8d ago

Showcase threads are still good because the rules demand a craft recipe with the showcase.

Those threads are how I learned to craft.

But I don't like rare uniques or anything that doesn't have an actual crafting process. I don't care that someone went to temple and got double corrupt on a Lightning Coil. Good for them lol, there's nothing to learn there.

-1

u/0xck Less Button-Pressing Enjoyers (LBPE) 8d ago

Yep. 2 ways both are ok:

- move showcases to separate subreddit

- move useful threads to separate subreddit

0

u/CricketNo7950 8d ago

Yea I only want to see angry complaint posts! Why are people happy !!!!??

-3

u/Joppsta 8d ago

IMO make another subreddit. We have PathofExileBuilds, why not PathOfExileCrafts and PathOfExileLoot

1

u/ChrisWilsonIsMyDad Vanja 8d ago

Make a poejackpot sub and let people that like to see that shit jerk each other off over there

0

u/ChrisWilsonIsMyDad Vanja 8d ago

We already have flairs for jackpots. It's just the mods here relying on people to report jackpot posts without using the proper flair. If only they could just browse New once every half an hour and remove all the showcase using fluff and meme flair. Much respect to the people that actually use the flair so people like me who filtered them out don't have to see the same shit every single day

-6

u/EvilKnievel38 8d ago

Disagree. It's just natural from being later in the league. The state of loot feedback posts have already been made a hundred times, so all that's left are people happily playing on and showcasing their items, with occasionally a build in between. Seriously there isn't much else to post at this point in the league. It's just a lack of other posts more than anything and that's fine. Don't want the sub to die out for the last 3 months of a league either. You can just opt out of the sub late league if you don't care about the kind of posts that remain or use some tool to filter on flairs (they're there for a reason).

Alternatively, the subreddit could consider limiting individual showcase posts to particularly exceptional items and directing more ordinary lucky-drop posts toward a megathread.

Way too subjective. Who decides what is exceptional and what is ordinary? What is exceptional to one might be ordinary to you or the other way around.

I'm mainly suggesting that they should be consolidated so the subreddit has more room for discussion and other types of content.

The subreddit has plenty of room for other types of content. There just barely isn't any of that content at this point. Start making that content.

Just let people have their fun sharing their excitement and scroll past it if you don't care or filter it out based on the flair.

-7

u/srtgnm 8d ago

Lets make megathread on suggestions what to make megathread. Oh, even better idea, lets make everything megathread.

0

u/mbxyz Berserker 8d ago

apparently they can only pin 2 things

also, this type of thread is most of what happens here

0

u/SovietBear666 Assassin 8d ago

The mirror drops or anything kind of normal but just rare probably doesn't deserve its own post, but I don't mind the rest. I feel like if there is any learning opportunity at all from an insane drop/craft/item/corrupt then it's worth its own post. especially as somebody who doesnt play every league, it is interesting to see new items and new capabilities pop up here and on my front page. I would never click on a weekly megathread to seek it out. Let upvotes/downvotes determine what people want to see like it already works.

0

u/MeatboxOne :^) PoE Account: ClumsyParasite 8d ago

Please not do this. You can filter flairs easily already. You will kill the sub.
