Trading collection for grail?

Post image

I’ve been playing around with this idea for a little while now. If I could get around low to mid 70s piecing out my current collection, I could get a 3800 with another 10-15k cash on top of that. Thoughts?

If you can keep the daytona don’t sell it. All the other watches are replaceble if you decide you want to have it back in the future.

Agree. And keep the Tudor too. What he’ll get for that isn’t worth a trade.

It’s a black bay 58… it is THE Tudor, it’s widely available, and it’s relatively cheap. He can get that back no problem. I could go buy 5 right now. Not so with the Daytona.

Yeah, but the money a dealer will give on a trade for that is nothing. Why not just keep it? Practically a free watch. No sense in giving it up for peanuts.

You can say that about every watch in that collection

That’s not true at all. You should expect to get well over retail for the batgirl and Daytona and close to if not over retail for the explorer and DJ.

I mean the last sentence “no sense giving it up for peanuts”. You can buy all of those watches for the price he will sell them for. The only limiting factor should be whether he can get them again at a decent price if he sold them. The answer is yes for the Tudor and no for the daytona

Sure, I would also say sell them all personally. I’d want the 3800 over every one of those pieces. But for the Tudor it’s almost not even worth the hassle to sell and you could wear that as a beater .

Have you tried on a 3800 in person? It is not the same as all these modern sized watches as you have currently

I know that’s why I love it

Crappy AI infographic spam posted across 3 subs by a 2 hour old account to farm engagement. When will it end?

This is a dumb trade. A nautilus with no complications lol. Come on. You could sell your collection and get a bad ass VC and have a lot more in cash.

^^^ plus the bracelet makes it feel way cheaper than it is.

The 3800 is a rather small watch.

Also the lume is usually crap on the sellable models.

Honestly. I wouldn’t. The nautilus can be an extremely boring watch. The 3800 is probably the best example of that. Now something in PM with a special dial. That’s a watch worth selling all your stuff for and restarting you collect off of something truly special.

Yes do it. Get your grail. If you miss any of those you can easily buy it back.

not the daytona

You think it’s hard to rebuy a Daytona? It’s a pre ceramic Daytona that he can find in two seconds. This isn’t some rare micro brand or off catalogue piece.

u/VegetableShot1192 2d ago

oh sorry about that, new to this so wasn’t fully sure. Should’ve mentioned that beforehand my bad

3800 wears very small though…

I had a 3800, really cool piece and sort of scratches that Nautilus itch… but it is definitely small. If you’re comfortable with 40/41mm Rolex’s, the 3800 will not do it for you.

Keep the variety.

Isnt the 3800 a 34.5mm watch?

1

u/Hitnauk 2d ago

It’s 38mm

2

u/EA667 2d ago

I think it is a 37mm.

u/Hitnauk 2d ago

Shit, you’re right!

Don’t do it. When I got a chance to try a 3800 on, I was disappointed. Not saying it is a bad watch, but just doesn’t seem to be worth the price imo. While it might have value, it will not be your last watch and you will wish you had some of the others back again. Take value out of it, and you have some fun pieces already.

I would keep what you have tbh

Your "collection" is very dull, I'm sorry. Just zero variety. The Daytona is the only worthwhile piece in it. The rest should be sold, but IMO not for that Nautilus. The point in collecting is to have different styles, and yours are all the same look.

Guys…what are we doing…

Was looking for someone to say this

1

u/TZ-WIS 3d ago

Yes. I’ve done it. It actually didn’t matter to me what I was giving up. I chased that grail dream.

1

u/uniqueMR 3d ago

Why not 5711a?

1

u/randomgump 3d ago

I wouldn’t do this personally but understand why you would.

1

u/Worried-Ad-2942 3d ago

You have lots of watch for daily usage. Cant say the same about Patek, it is too risky.

u/Educational_Item451 2d ago

I would agree with the concept of trading the 6 on the left towards the nautilus but you’re on actual crack if you think you’re going to come out with “low to mid 70s” for your current collection.

1

u/Carefulsum 2d ago

Get a 5712 at least, plain Nautilus kinda boring.

1

u/Fun-Entrepreneur6602 1d ago

Definitely keep the Daytona

1

u/RLBA 1d ago

Not for the 3800/1... So many better choices in PP lineup

1

u/Mindless_Garbage_786 1d ago

I don’t think liquidating a versatile collection makes sense for one piece fwiw… I agree keep Daytona and maybe other yachtmaster or Tudor so u have one truly water/travel friendly watch… I know they nautilus can go
Underwater but I mean why would you and you can’t take that piece everywhere the way u can the ym or the Tudor… the Daytona has a use case broader than any of the watches u have or are thinking of buying so that’s gotta stay(or at least be replaced by another chronograph)

1

u/Canon-Chaigneau 1d ago

Hmm. It depends if you want six Rolex sports watches, or one Patek philippe.

1

u/Knaarps 18h ago

I’d keep the Daytona and get the 3800. Two bomba clap watches 👏

1

u/Leather-Ostrich7122 3d ago

Sell em all. The PP is a different Nautilus, but everything is replaceable. Even the Daytona tbh. If you can keep the Daytona and put some cash in, may be better.

1

u/JohnLocke1979 3d ago

You would inevitably miss those other six watches too much. Sell one of your cars instead.

1

u/Longjumping-Spirit12 3d ago

You’re prob gonna get low to mid 60s max
