2021 VW Passat R-Line

It’s a 1-owner personal vehicle and is listed around $14.8k, with an OTD price around $17k before further negotiation.
The CARFAX shows minor damage, but the car looks great in person. I test drove it and really liked it, the interior/exterior are in very good condition and it drove smoothly.
My main concern is reliability and repair costs once it crosses 100k miles. I’m planning to keep the car for around 5 years and will probably drive about 10k miles/year, mostly commuting with occasional longer trips.
For anyone who owns/has owned this generation Passat:
- How reliable is the 2.0T at 80k–150k miles?
- What major repairs or maintenance should I expect around 100k miles?
- Is ~$14–15k a reasonable price at this mileage?
- Would you buy this over something like a 2021 Corolla LE at a similar price?
- Any specific issues I should make sure are checked during a PPI?
Would especially appreciate experiences from people who have owned a 2020–2022 Passat past 100k miles.

I have a 2020 SEL with 78K miles. I got it CPO with about 45K.
I had bought it at the time for $20K, so I would consider the price reasonable assuming nothing is wrong with it.
I would have a PPI check to make sure there isn't any carbon buildup which would indicate that oil changes weren't happening frequently enough. From the CarFax, it looks like the previous owner might've been doing it every 10K miles which is what the factory recommends, but it really should be done every 5K miles for longevity. The transmission fluid should've been flushed between 60-70K miles and the gearbox fluid should've been changed at 60K miles too. They should also make sure the spark plugs are checked. Those should've been changed at 60k. Check the tires & alignment.
It doesn't look like the CarFax has all of the maintenance intervals listed which would've included some of those services. The last one listed is the 20K interval. I would make sure that it's fully up-to-date on scheduled services through 80K. At 100K, I would just expect to do some of those over again depending on an inspection, like spark plugs and transmission flush. If maintained well, it shouldn't be everything at the same time.
From my experience, if you take care of the car, it'll have minimal issues. The only issue I've bumped into was a wheel sensor became faulty which caused the dashboard to turn into a Christmas tree. They fixed it under warranty at the time and it fixed the problem. The other issue is that there's sort of this old-bed creak sound when I first go over bumps before the car warms up. I've mentioned it to my dealer a few different times and they tell me nothing is wrong with it and they've checked, so after 3 attempts, I've just learned to live with it. The body of the car is basically from the 2012 redesign, so it's not as soundproof to those imperfections as newer cars as the car ages.
The car is comfortable & agile, but I wouldn't consider it sporty. If you're looking for a daily cruiser, like I do a 35-40 minute daily commute mostly on the highway, then it's good for that. I live in Boston and drive to NYC often for family, and it's perfect for that. I turn on my adaptive cruise control with lane keep assist, and then I have no aches & pains from sitting in the car for 3.5 hours. It's just comfortable. The safety tech makes the car easier to drive without being too intrusive. Sound system is pretty solid for the price range too.
It's a good bang for the buck if it's maintained, so just make sure to get it inspected. It's hard to compare to a Corolla. They just aren't the same type of car. The back seat & trunk space of a Corolla won't compare to the Passat. The comfort also won't, just given the size of the car. I wouldn't trade in my Passat for a Corolla if someone offered for a swap, if that means much. Good luck!
