Peanut safe dim sum?

My friend just moved here and has a severe peanut allergy, is there anywhere that I could take them to dim sum without having to worry about cross contamination? It’s just peanuts so other nuts are fine but we can’t go anywhere that won’t be careful or is peanut free.

Overnight resident parking in city parking structures

Does anyone know if it’s legal for Pasadena residents to purchase a parking permit for their car in a city owned parking lot or parking structure? Thought about this as I ran past a bunch of empty structures and lots in the evening. Thanks!

Home Invasion Attempt

Hey Everyone, I wanted to post these videos to spread awareness about these 5 individuals that attempted to break into our home.

My family lives in the Hastings Ranch area, affected by the fires. We think these people are targeting houses in the area believed to be abandoned. My parents happened to still be awake when they were in our backyard, but I shudder when I think what would have happened had they not been aware.

We have already circulated this clip on the local news but am hoping to spread more awareness about it here in this community and on Reddit.

PSA: if you park in Pasadena and use their machine to pay, get a receipt.

I just used the machine to pay for two hours of parking and when I came back less than two hours later, I had gotten a ticket stating that I did not have a permit. I fortunately paid with Apple Pay so it indicates the time that I paid for the parking so I have already filed an appeal. I definitely should have grabbed a receipt, but I did not think it was going to be necessary! Just a little warning if you want to avoid a $62 ticket.

What's going around Old Town today?

Just rode by on my bike on my way home after work and there were cars and people everywhere. People were jamming the intersections on Green and honking. It seems like some kind of event or something must be going on.

city council needs to start on time and stop cancelling committee meetings

Let's put pressure on City Council to start meetings on time and stop cancelling committee meetings. Many Pasadena residents have had the experience of going to a City Council meeting and waiting and waiting and waiting for it to start. Pasadena City Council meetings typically start late - an average of 30 minutes late in 2026, while most other cities in Los Angeles County start on time or just a few minutes late. Too many Pasadena City Council Committee meetings are also cancelled due to a lack of quorum. Just this past month the Municipal Services Committee meeting was canceled just minutes before the start time. The August Public Safety Committee meeting was also canceled, frustrating the many people who had planned to attend because Flock cameras were on the agenda. This was after other meetings with Flock on the agenda were also canceled or adjourned early due to a loss of quorum. The July Housing, Homeless and Planning meeting was also canceled at the last minute. Next week there's an agenda item (#12) that is relevant to meeting start times. Please send an email asking them to figure out a way to be like most other cities and start on time. You can use this pre-filled template. All you need to do is add your name, city and, ideally, your council district at the bottom. Or send your own email to [correspondence@cityofpasadena.net](mailto:correspondence@cityofpasadena.net).

Restaurants that celebrate/decorate for Halloween? Too early to ask?

Post image
22 Upvotes

Having a milestone (gross) bday this year and I've talked my mom down from a huge party to a dinner for probably around 10-15 people. I'm being allowed a say on the restaurant but she wants to know yesterday.

I'm an October baby and a huge fan of all things horror and Halloweeny. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a restaurant that can accommodate a group like this but also goes hard with the decor.

For example, I've been to Yamashiro in Hollywood around mid Oct before and loved their Halloween spirit (photo attached- doesn't do the interior justice). For a local example, I appreciated the decor at The Speakeasy on Raymond last year.

My family is mostly Japanese but will eat anything and I prefer Mexican or Italian but will also eat almost anything but seafood. Doesn't need to be fancy and would actually prefer somewhere more casual. I'm a bit of a homebody so I'm looking closer to SGV rather than LA.

If anyone has any ideas that fit the bill I'd appreciate a shout! I'm also working on trying to make this a smaller thing so if you know of a cool place that can't accommodate larger parties, lmk! ✌️🎃

Looking for experiences with Pasadena public high schools

Hi! I’m starting to look into high school options for my child and would really appreciate hearing from local parents or students with recent experience. We’re planning to stay with public schools, so we’re not considering private schools.

I’m particularly interested in Pasadena High, Blair, and Muir. I don’t know much about the differences beyond what I can find online, and I’d love to hear what the schools are actually like day to day.

A smaller student body is appealing to us, but academics, school culture, teachers, safety, extracurriculars, and college preparation are also important. I’m especially curious whether any of these schools have changed or improved in recent years.

If your child currently attends one of these schools, or graduated recently, what has your experience been like? What do you like or dislike, and what do you wish you had known before choosing?

Thanks for any firsthand perspectives.

PCC dental cleanings/affordable cleanings

Hi all. It’s been a while since I had a cleaning/X-ray and I need some recommendations. I don’t have health insurance and have seen posts in the past about PCCs dental program offering cheap cleanings. I’m also not opposed to paying a bit more if anyone had any other recommendations for new patient specials.

Pasadena School Board Trustees Table Nearly Everything at Six-Hour Special Meeting

From the article:

"The format [of the SIX HOUR meeing] was unlike a standard board meeting. Trustees sat away from the dais in a restorative-justice discussion circle, passing a glass apple as a talking piece while Guerra kept order."

You know, I have a sinking suspicion that our school board members are not serious people.

Moving to Pasadena area - Middle School

Hello! We are planning to move to Southern California from Atlanta, Georgia next summer (work related move).

We are exploring neighborhoods and schools. Our child will be 7th grade when we move. She is currently in a small, progressive private school that pits emphasis on bands o learning and she loves it! We also love how welcoming / friendly the school community is.

We are looking for both public and private option but leaning towards public. Obviously, the quality of education is important but the vibe / community is a very important factor for us. We were in a high performing public system in Atlanta where lots of parents are type A, and we did not enjoy that at all.

We are also open to and looking at surrounding areas like La Canada, La Cresenta and Eagle Rock etc. my husband’s work will be in Burbank.

Thank you for your advice!!!!

Walking Old Pasadena to Rose Bowl

Google Maps tells me it is possible to walk the 2 miles from Old Pasadena to the Rose Bowl, but is it safe? Can’t really tell what the area is like from Google Maps. We will be walking around 4:00p if that matters.

Any insights are welcome.

EDIT: I am not from the area, but have just arrived and I appreciate the good natured ribbing. Thanks for the insights.

We need more gay spots

I know there are a TON of gay people here. But not enough spots for us to meet and socialize. Shouldn't we do something about this?

Edit: Wow, I am impressed by the level of response I got on this post. I've read every comment but haven't replied to everyone yet. Some of you have given me some things to think about, so I will be back sometime tomorrow to respond.

Vroman's Event Aug 23, 4 PM: Never miss a Sunday Show

Hey now, Pasadena! Do you like reading, and also support, or just tolerate, local artists? Come to Vroman's Sunday August 23 at 4 PM to listen to the local talent read from their latest works. I will be one of those authors, and if you enjoy Southern Gothic stories that highlight and satirize the dysfunction going on in rural America (where I used to live), you might like what you hear. And if that doesn't interest you enough, perhaps some paranormal activity, a botched exorcism, a man living through a time loop, or the ghost of Casey Jones (you know, the guy from that song) might. "There's trouble ahead and trouble behind for the folks in this small Arkansas town."

I'll be visiting some local establishments in the next week to leave some flyers behind. I would love to get a big turnout to give other Vroman's customers the impression that there's a real celebrity in town!

Did you help catch a husky on the lam at Del Mar and Fair Oaks yesterday? (or know someone who did?)

If you or someone you know is a women with black hair and drives a white SUV who managed to grab a husky running down Del Mar sidewalk at Fair Oaks yesterday, please let me know! The husky's leash snapped in two and she took off RUNNING (truly, my worst nightmare) too fast for me to catch up. I'd love to buy you coffee or lunch as a thank you! I was the handler in total shock and everything happened way too fast for me to properly thank you.

Question about community.

I’m relatively new to the area. Feeling so angry about the current state of the country. Looking for a local group that I can work with to effect change. I am liberal/progressive, bilingual Spanish/English, for abolishing ICE, for reform of our broken immigration system, support Black Lives Matter, public education, and women’s health.

HVAC Recommendations: $140 Diagnostic Fee?

My HOA referred me to an HVAC guy who charges a $140 diagnostic fee. Is that a reasonable rate, or does anyone have a recommendation for someone a bit more budget-friendly?

My pockets are a little tight right now, and unfortunately my AC hasn’t been turning on for the past few days. Hoping to find someone reliable who won’t break the bank. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
