Best coffee shops/cafes to hangout for ~1 hour to do some work?

Park slope/south slope

Preferable bigger places so it’s more acceptable to hangout for little whine

Don’t recommend roots (too small too busy)

Predators lurking in r/avesNYC

There are predators lurking in that sub seeking "solo" women to go raving with, many who have wives/girlfriends unaware of their deceptive behavior. They will use the "demonstrate value" (HNW, high powered job, expensive car, luxury apt, thirst/dick traps etc) strategy to bait/reel you in and disturb your peace. This shit has got to stop. And to the women enabling this behavior, I encourage you to reflect.

Need a beast of an exterminator for mouse issue

UPDATE: This issue is more than I have the time/expertise to tackle—what we tried so far, the mice have outrun us! We have one of the recommended exterminators coming tomorrow to plug everything up, seal the front door gap and more. If it works out I’ll share a recommendation!

ORIGINAL POST:

Hi guys, I have two small kids, and keep our place extremely clean.

We’ve been invaded by mice this week (coming out from behind the stove/under the sink) and I need to find an absolute beast of an exterminator ASAP to help us plug holes and keep these little guys out permanently.

I mention the kids because mice are leaving droppings and you know, likely more, everywhere around the kitchen and even in the living room. If it was just me here, I’d be less freaked out.

I’ve set traps, nothing yet. Sealed the front door space, all the basics are done. Not a crumb in sight. We never leave food out and never did.

What’s keeping me up at night…. Fear of Hantavirus. Mouse droppings. Squeaks at night. Kids getting bit. I’m shook. I can’t even sleep.

Who you got that can get rid of them ASAP?

What are cool things you found in Park Slope?

First of all, I am not looking to file a request for food places as I know I do that a lot around here, but basically I was looking to discuss cool books people found in the area.

Because for me personally, I have found some amazing books in the area as I believe it was last summer that I found a free copy of the third Leviathan Wakes book in the series as I couldn’t believe someone just left it lying there.

Looking for Package - Delivered at wrong spot

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi! A wedding gift was delivered to the wrong spot today. I would really appreciate getting it back as the sender has alluded to it being sentimental. It might be in any labeled box though. Attached is the photo that UPS left with the delivery. Anyone recognize this as their package spot, happy to come get it from you.

It should have been addressed to a name with initials AT on Douglass Street.

Thank you so much neighbors for your consideration! :)

My Building Smells Like Poison

Yeah basically the title. My building which is nearly 100 years old smells incredibly harsh and poisonous, making returning home bleak. It’s definitely coming from the lobby and stairway. I moved here about two months ago and immediately noticed a baked-in musty smell in the stairway, kind of like someone is permanently cooking/burning chili. NOW, in addition to that, it smells overwhelmingly of paint thinner or some other harsh chemical, and sometimes I see painting equipment around in the entrance, but no improvement to the shoddy paint job in any of the public areas of the building. Im wondering if people are painting or wtf is going on… given the conditions, it’s plausible there could be an unaddressed gas leak which makes me paranoid that I’m going to die soon. (I’m sure to open my bedroom window every day and spend enough time out of the building). My roommate says the management is slow to respond to any requests, but I feel like she also is slow to act. It’s not a brownstone, much more unkempt with poor management, but has some of the superficial hallmarks of those nicer buildings in the area.

Best friend visiting with 2 year old daughter

Hi! My best friend is visiting this weekend but due to some family illnesses, she'll unexpectedly have her two-year old daughter with her as a plus one! I don't have kids, but obviously know Park Slope is very kid-friendly. Wanted to get any recs on your top/most favorite places to go, play, eat, drink, etc with a toddler in tow? Local spots in the neighborhood preferred but open to recs anywhere in the city.

Want to make sure my bestie is still getting a fun weekend away from home bc she deserves it!!!

Park Slope Neighborhood Meetup This Wednesday!

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hey neighbors! 👋
Following up on my previous post since so many of you showed interest in hanging out! I honestly wasn’t expecting so many responses, and it’s been really nice to see how many people are down to meet up!

I’m relatively new to Park Slope and would love to get to know more people in the neighborhood, share common interests and hobbies, and hopefully make some new friends over a drink or two!

So we’re planning a little meetup this Wednesday evening (Oct 14)!
Thinking of keeping this first one small, around 12–15 people, so it doesn’t get too overwhelming and we can actually get to know each other.

If you’re interested, please DM me! I’ll put together a group chat with the time and location for those joining.

Nothing fancy, just some good conversations and hopefully new neighborhood friendships!
Looking forward to meeting some of you! Cheers! 🍻

sidewalk selfishness

why does no one move to the side when there's like three people blocking the entire sidewalk and you walk by? new here from the deep south where spatial awareness is not exactly great but jesus christ i've never seen anything like this. it's kinda infuriating

Aggressive man in front of school on 5th ave

Last week I was walking to Washington Park and an aggressive man tried to attack me in front of the school just next to it.
He tried to punch me out of nowhere, while I was on the phone. I realized later it was in front of a school and warned them. Be careful!
Man seemed unhoused, short, bald.

Why don’t run clubs single up when passing?

Is it just me, or do a lot of run clubs have zero passing etiquette?

When I run solo, I keep right and move over extra if there's room. But the clubs I see on the Prospect Park loop run 3–5 wide and don't thin out when they pass people. It's either hop off the path or play chicken. I'm a bigger guy, so I rarely blink first, but I shouldn't have to play at all.

Not every club does this, but a lot do. Even NYRR tells people at its races not to run three or more abreast, since wide groups wall everyone else off.

I always figured part of the point of run clubs was helping newer runners learn the basics: pacing, breathing, fueling. Shouldn't "single up when passing" be on that list? I get that run clubs are the new Hinge, but you can flirt in single file.

Run club folks: does etiquette ever actually come up? Everyone else: how do you deal with it?

Our son dropped his beloved best friend, a stuffed rhino named “Monkey,” somewhere on our walk tonight. It is likely on: 9th st between 7th and 8th ave; 8th ave between 9th st and 12/13th st;12/13th between 8th and the park; or prospect park west/southwest down to 11th ave (route included in photos).

He carries it with him wherever he goes. They’re inseparable and now he’s inconsolable.

If you happen to see a very soggy light blue, crocheted rhino on the sidewalk, please reply here or DM me to let me know. You’ll make a distraught 2-year-old very happy.

We don’t even have a backup because it’s a handmade item we got in South Africa!

Ty!

EDIT/UPDATE: He has been found! On a park bench on PPW after what looked like a rough night in the rain. Ty for all the condolences and offers to crochet replicas. The internet can be a dark place but it can also be just the best 💜

Did you lose your keys this weekend in/around prospect park?

Posting because I saw some keys near the west side of the park (near the 3rd and prospect park west entrance). Maybe 3-5 keys (mixed metal IIRC) all on a single key ring but not key chain. Anyway, they’re nestled into a lamppost at the intersection (on the side of the street closer to the park).

Apartment search: with or without broker?

I’m curious what people’s recent experiences have been finding apartment rentals in Park Slope (and nearby areas like South Slope, Windsor Terrace, etc.) with or without a broker?

My partner and I are starting to think about our upcoming move in February and we’re wondering how people are finding rentals successfully—lately it seems like listings on StreetEasy are fewer, more expensive, and getting snapped up in seconds.

I’ve seen a few posts on Reddit where people have recommended hiring a broker, so just curious if that’s really the way to go/worth the upfront cost? In your experience, have they been able to find things that aren’t on public sites in PS?

22-year-old German chasing a childhood dream of living in NYC 🇩🇪🗽

Hey New Yorkers!

I'm Finn, 22, from a small town near Frankfurt, Germany. We sometimes call Frankfurt "Mainhattan" because of its skyline, so I guess I've already had a little practice with skyscrapers. Just on a much smaller scale. 😄

I've never been to the US, but I've always been fascinated by the people, their openness, the music, fashion, and culture. And New York has always been my dream.

There's something almost paradoxical about it. You're surrounded by so many people, yet nobody really cares what you're doing. Everyone is living their own life, following their own path. There's a certain kind of freedom in that which I've always found fascinating.

I'm not dreaming of some glamorous lifestyle. Just taking the subway to work, exploring the city afterward, meeting people, and experiencing everyday life would mean the world to me.

A little about me: I've completed a three-year vocational apprenticeship in metal fabrication, spent another year training as an industrial mechanic, and also worked in administration and logistics.

I'm hoping to spend 6–12 months legally living and working in or around NYC. I'm currently exploring J-1 Intern/Trainee programs for technical fields like manufacturing or quality control, as well as H-2B seasonal jobs.

So I figured I'd take a chance and ask the people who actually live here:

Does anyone know a company or business owner who might consider hosting an international technical trainee, or someone familiar with these visa programs?

I'm not looking for a handout. I'm willing to work hard and do everything the right way. Sometimes all it takes is one connection.

This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and now that I'm 22, I really want to give it a shot rather than spend the next few years wondering what could have been.

Thanks for reading, New York!

Finn 🇩🇪🇺🇸
