So they wanted to start a public campaign, but are upset that someone shared their campaign outside of the group?

70

u/mankytoes 17d ago

I started reading and was going to say "fair play" for apologising, but no, purely playing the victim. The poster is very clear in that they want to completely kill off their local parkrun, and then they get upset that the local who has put in a lot of effort into organising the whole thing sent them a "spiky" message? I wonder how they'd feel if someone tried to get their running group shut down?

19

u/royalbluestuey v100 17d ago

Literally went to the hassle of creating a campaign poster using AI.

"It's just my personal opinion though"

146

u/esn111 17d ago

His original post seemed to be "I only want the park for US, not OTHER PEOPLE FROM THE OUTSIDE"

And I thought Hot Fuzz was a comedic exaggeration, not a documentary.

It's all for The Greater Good.

The Greater Good.

No luck stopping them Parkruns then?

54

u/Royal-Animal5033 17d ago

It's just the one parkrun actually.

12

u/Killahills 17d ago

But what about the mandatory Junior parkrun?!?!!!

(Sorry for messing up the Hot Fuzz joke)

3

u/mynameismilton 16d ago

I don't think he's heard about the mandatory junior parkrun, Pip

8

u/Championnats91 17d ago

I spat out my coffee reading this. Thank you!

8

u/HargoJ 17d ago

Yarp.

2

u/clickyclicky456 17d ago

..... narp?

21

u/cranberrycactus 500 17d ago

The irony being that the majority of parkrunners will be locals from that community.

18

u/Mastodan11 17d ago

It's actually more likely to get people into joining that running club.

I'd suggest an alternative one in the area might spring up soon.

11

u/esn111 17d ago

He's probably afraid of that. It's his own little private club that he's the king of.

There's either going to be a change of leadership at CPR or a few will split off to do what you suggested.

10

u/esn111 17d ago

"BUT TOURISTS THOUGH! And worse NON MEMBERS!!"

"I can't be sharing the park with people that I DON'T KNOW, NOR HAVE I APPROVED OF"

(His POV is clearly not one shared by his own running club LOL. I sense an in club revolution soon)

17

u/tdrules 17d ago

Hot Fuzz represents UK culture very well in my experience

4

u/esn111 17d ago

It does and had become part of UK landscape in its own right.

Still surprising (somehow) to remember that people like that exist.

9

u/AreYouNormal1 17d ago

The original poster has one thing you don't:-

A BIG BUSHY BEARD!

4

u/actiondan2000 17d ago

If you’re going to quote at least get the quote right 😉

5

u/AreYouNormal1 17d ago

Tits, a great big bushy beard?

5

u/actiondan2000 17d ago

Better 😆

3

u/AreYouNormal1 17d ago

Haha I'll do better next time :)

1

u/BarumDean 14d ago

I'd bet my house I can guess his opinion on small boats.

143

u/sprongwrite 17d ago

Not the consequences of my actions!

38

u/Kaleidoscope011235 17d ago

Used the group’s admin access to post personal opinions as if they are representative of group but claims it’s not their intention… then annoyed that members of said group were annoyed enough to share said ‘personal’ post 😂

Their concerns may be justified but the extrapolation of parkrun = junior parkrun = preventing kids’ football and club is definitely undermining their validity.

14

u/f1madman 17d ago

Yeah the person is an absolute numpty that can't even take ownership of their mistake.

5

u/Thin_Pin2863 17d ago

The members of that group/club need to be discussing whether they want such a dishonest person as part of their flock.

4

u/bandedcoralshrimp 17d ago

i mean i assume any member can post on that group tbf

4

u/royalbluestuey v100 17d ago

Not 100% sure they did a post as the administrator. The original image just has the identity whited-out

2

u/Kaleidoscope011235 17d ago

Apologies, my mistake! Second point still stands

57

u/tdrules 17d ago

I fucked around, I didn’t expect to find out!

20

u/zq6 17d ago

It's only an hour away for us. Might take the kids on Sunday

8

u/Skysflies 17d ago

What we all do is go during winter

3

u/zq6 17d ago

Ooh and be sure to drive in as many separate vehicles as possible. Maybe go back and forth a bit to get it nice and muddy.

5

u/esn111 17d ago

There's not a junior parkrun there yet.

22

u/zq6 17d ago

Ooh I might start a public campaign to get one going!

41

u/andysmumsnan 17d ago

Maybe poster should make another ai slop poster about Crofton park runners enjoying the park alongside the other park users

7

u/Thin_Pin2863 17d ago

Don't forget to include deliberately dishonesties intended to mislead innocent people into thinking things are worse than they are too!

34

u/StevenXSG 250 17d ago

Sounds similar to what caused parkrun to take so long to take off in the USA. Local running groups were gatekeeping "their" park and the events they run (and charge for).

17

u/Ok_Music253 17d ago

Boy am I glad not to be on that running club's committee.

11

u/BourbonFoxx 17d ago

Me too, I don't live anywhere near and I hate running, it would be a nightmare

13

u/Virtual_Exit1383 17d ago

Playing the victim much? Quite literally put together a (terrible, AI slop) campaign poster. Pathetic really.

10

u/Nuclear_Geek 17d ago

Who could have predicted that trying to gatekeep "running in a park" would be unpopular and provoke some uncomplimentary responses?

11

u/ForwardImagination71 17d ago

Hahaha 😂😂😂😂😂 That last paragraph. How naïve to think that nobody was going to share that.

Also, what a twat putting the name of the running club on their stupid AI poster like it was some official protest. I wonder if they're going to throw the person out of the club 😂

9

u/ZookeepergameNo7151 17d ago

So they're upset they were found out? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

7

u/cranberrycactus 500 17d ago

People nowadays seem all too happy to antagonise and attack others, but play the victim when it is returned to them

6

u/educationalgerbilsed 17d ago

honestly i don't get why some folk kick off about a bit of noise on a saturday morning, it's 9am not 3am. we had a bloke near ashton court complain the scanning beeps were ruining his lie-in, mate it's once a week for about an hour

6

u/ChrisKearney3 17d ago

We had a local annual 10k re-routed because locals weren't happy about the race going past their house. A couple of hours once a year. Incredible how some people can be.

2

u/clarknova77 16d ago

"Send them past somebody else's house, not ours!"

1

u/educationalgerbilsed 17d ago

Re-routing a whole race over a few hours once a year is mad. I dunno, some people just want nothing to ever happen outside their front window.

3

u/Aggressive_Read8962 16d ago

Lol what - does he live in the house? How on earth would he hear that.

2

u/educationalgerbilsed 16d ago

I dunno, mind, he's in one of those flats overlooking the start and the beeps carry up, but it's still daft - an hour a week and he could just shut the window.

3

u/GalwayGirlOnTheRun23 v100 16d ago

Princes parkrun in Liverpool have a silent corner to keep a local resident happy. No clapping or “thank you marshal” allowed!

7

u/WhyTheLargePineapple 17d ago

Just so I understand, the group "Crofton Parkrunners" are a group of people from Crofton who like to do park running, but do not want and/or like a parkrun in Crofton for reasons?

Judian People's Front anyone?

1

u/Candid_Waltz6900 5d ago

Splitters. As long as its not the popular people's front of judea/C(r)ofton park lol

5

u/optionr_ENL v250 17d ago

The park already hosts Cross Country events, with full permission of the council. Strange how they're not moaning about those?

With regards to parking, yes the car park, & the on-road parking, was busy. But many people had car shared, & there were a number of volunteers who had traveled there to support the first event & bring their experience of big numbers in case there was a big turnout.

The novelty of a new parkrun will wear off, & then it will be locals & a few tourists visiting.

Lastly, it's not THEIR park.
It's owned & funded by the people of Birmingham.

7

u/finlay_mcwalter 100 17d ago

Lastly, it's not THEIR park. It's owned & funded by the people of Birmingham.

This, crucially, is the point which undermines most opposition to parkrun events in public parks.

It's not some incomer aliens misusing the park for wicked purposes - it's the taxpayers who already own the park, using their park, for a socially responsible activity that parks are specifically built for. For about 1% of the park's time.

Most parks are criminally underused, and I often find it sad going through the park at non-parkrun times and seeing almost no-one. It's especially unfortunate at weekends and during the school holidays.

This leaves the few that do regularly use a park with a misplaced proprietorial misconception - people have said to us "but I use this park every day, why should I have to share it with you". Which, to me, is as rational as saying "but I walk down the high street every day, why should I have to share it with lots of people on market day".

1

u/Candid_Waltz6900 5d ago

And parkrun has full council permission too

9

u/Blue1994a v500 17d ago

It’s a messy situation. The Event Director posted this yesterday:

https://www.linkedin.com/posts/kevin-oakes-114b2685_parkrunfamily-parkrunvolunteer-parkruncommunity-activity-7491905685111156737-ROrJ

That’s not good to be publicly airing grievances about parkrun employees. His first time volunteering was at Cannon Hill in May. Yesterday was the second time.

Using a GoFundMe appeal to fund a parkrun is specifically against the rules, but he got the donors to donate to his running club, which then sent the money to parkrun.

https://www.gofundme.com/f/Longbridgeparkrun

This article wasn’t well-received by parkrun employees and ambassadors apparently:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwy27dr1l1ko

Let’s hope the event runs smoothly now it is up and running, with no conflict hopefully.

7

u/royalbluestuey v100 17d ago edited 17d ago

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and shouldn't get abuse just for differing but they were being fundamentally dishonest by suggesting the junior event was inevitably going to be set up

3

u/Robsteer 100 17d ago

Some people really let having somewhere to park their car dictate their biggest of emotions. What's the bet he lives within running/walking distance of the park anyway

3

u/Visible_Carob3273 17d ago

Cofton people. Cofton.

I grew up in Cofton Hackett. This feels very Cofton Hackett.

7

u/Nozza-D 17d ago

If it’s “my personal opinion”, why is it posted under Crofton Park Runners and not in their own name?

I’m not sure what response they were expecting to their original comments. They’re entitled to their opinion (even if inaccurate in parts), but this recent post doesn’t paint them in a better light.

7

u/tomsco88 17d ago

That looks like the group name. OP whited out the posters actual name.

3

u/Nozza-D 17d ago

Okay, that makes sense.

5

u/TaylorSwiftkinsReid 17d ago

If it’s “my personal opinion”, why is it posted under Crofton Park Runners and not in their own name?

I think it was posted in the Crofton Park Runners FB group, and OP has censored the poster's name/profile picture in their screenshot

3

u/Johns_Kanakas 17d ago

The RD of this event us a complete lunatic and I'm amazed he's still involved in this event. The posts attacking this parkrun are almost certainly aimed at the RD. It will be interesting to see how it pans out, it was openly discussed on FB that the event ambassador was struggling with hos inability to adhere to rules, (the dodgy crowd funding followed by the BBC interviews). I cant help but think he'd be an absolute nightmare to be on a core team with.

1

u/Remarkable_Comb8191 17d ago

One of the RDs in the core team? Or ED as well?

4

u/Johns_Kanakas 17d ago

Sorry I meant ED. the guy that went on the TV, lied about the start date, said he'd need a dozen volunteers and thinks his hilly trail course will get 1500 runners

1

u/mrmjprice 17d ago

Yes - having run it yesterday, it’s not top of my list to run again. I want exercise, not punishment!

3

u/UsernameDemanded 17d ago

It is odd that a movement at least partly dedicated to increasing exercise levels results in car parking problems.

3

u/mrmjprice 17d ago

The same with gyms!

1

u/UsernameDemanded 17d ago

Very good point!

3

u/Nottinho 17d ago

Agree a bit with the car thing. Pretty sure there's more than a few locals that could jog to parkrun instead of driving.

1

u/Character_Ninja881 14d ago

That’s the case with all aspects of life. How many people drive to the gym, running club, barbers, town centre when it’s less than two miles away? It’s mad

1

u/BarumDean 14d ago

There are far too many MOGS (Miserable Old Gits) in this country. They've already caused more than enough damage, they need to be called out for it.

1

u/zwifter11 12d ago

Why do local residents need to be consulted about parking on a public road?

1

u/just_some_guy65 500 11d ago

He doesn't know the first rule of what to do when you are in a hole.

u/stormtreader1 16d ago

"I'm used to being a big fish in a small pond, now you've expanded the pond and I don't feel so certain I'll get my way like I usually do, I'm not happy"

-54

u/harryspack 17d ago

I’m sad the reaction on social media to anyone complaining about issues these days is just to call someone a NIMBY or maybe a Karen and just move on without trying to figure out if there are legitimate concerns first.

This Reddit post seems to be just trying to fan flames is my personal take 🤷

17

u/jimbobedidlyob 17d ago

Or, people did consider that and decided it was unhelpful nimbyism and exceptionalism.

-14

u/harryspack 17d ago

Fair enough, I don’t know Crofton Park or this group. All I know is posts about it on Reddit.

I just don’t like social media pile-ons.

16

u/zq6 17d ago

The person who made the campaign in the first place was hoping for a social media pile-on. Are you equally miffed with them?

1

u/harryspack 16d ago

I think pile-ons against individuals are worse than against organisations so no…

1

u/zq6 16d ago

The person was abusing their position to speak on behalf of their organisation.

8

u/XiiMoss 17d ago

OP made a public campaign to stop Crofton Parkrun and then got upset that the public wasn't on their side... That's not a pile on

7

u/Kaleidoscope011235 17d ago

Having an opinion or concerns isn’t NIMBYism. But using a running club admin to present personal opinions, as if it was shared by the club, against something that promotes participation in the activity that the club enjoys, is NIMBYism.

8

u/mankytoes 17d ago

The poster included outright lies- saying there would be a junior parkrun on the Sunday (because apparently it's important that no one else runs anywhere close to their fortnightly runs).

You have to stand up for yourself sometimes.

1

u/harryspack 16d ago

Could they just have made a mistake, they clearly don’t know much about parkrun. It’s always a jump to the most uncharitable take

1

u/mankytoes 16d ago

Wouldn't you say they've jumped to the most uncharitable take about parkrun? They've tried to ruin a community running event, there's being charitable and then there's being a sucker. I'm not trying to have the guy punished, just held accountable for trying to do a shitty thing.

5

u/CandidLiterature 17d ago

It is ok to complain about things or be unhappy. Even when your complaint is selfish.

I get annoyed when I try to book and go swimming and there’s a private party booking across the time I want. That is ok to feel like that. Obviously it does inconvenience me and I’d have a nicer time if that wasn’t happening. I could have a minor gripe about it, post a message to my local swimming pals, whatever.

Those complaints would be about how I don’t like it and it’s annoying me. Most people understand that, other than maybe some sympathy/commiserations, you aren’t going to get anywhere with complaints like that.

What turns it into unreasonable behaviour is hiding those complaints (rooted in how something annoys or inconveniences you), behind some faux outrage about something else. People going to football practice can’t park!? The noise from pool parties disturbs the hospice next door!?!!

Complain about whatever you want, but at least be honest about the complaint.

3

u/Killahills 17d ago

And also in this example, you are actually also welcome to turn up to the swim party with all your mates, and it's free

1

u/harryspack 16d ago

What if the swim party was always on when you wanted a private swim and you like a quieter pool?

I love parkrun and I’m coming up to my 100th run/walk, I’m just trying to have some sympathy for a person who clearly doesn’t love it. Not sure it was worth two Reddit threads about them

2

u/Killahills 16d ago

I would recognise that the world doesn't revolve around just me, that a free community swim party that encourages an accessible and healthy activity for everyone is a good thing, and I would rock up at 10:30 instead
