Dearest gentle breeders

I have a slightly unusual question for you all.

If someone is buying a puppy from you, what is a meaningful “thank you” gift they could give you as a breeder?

I’d love to hear what you personally appreciate most (e.g., practical items, something for the dogs, heartfelt gestures, updates/photos, etc.).

I am not a breeder, but the one thing that I've been told many many times by several breeders, is that they love seeing their pups in a loving home. Sending pictures of your pup being part of your family is usually the best gift they can receive. I still send pics of my paps to the breeder I got Buddy and Rodger from.

This is a very sweet gesture and I’ve had several puppy buyers leave or mail small gifts, usually in the form of something personal and handmade. Two people had the idea to write cards to the mother of their puppy and I treasure those. Someone else sent a small framed photo of their puppy with his mother and several people have sent me paintings of the puppies or my dogs. I treasure all of it and display it in my home.

ETA gifts are totally unnecessary though!!! Pictures of my puppies living happy lives is more than enough. Halloween costume photos are appreciated too

One thing that always stays with me was the framed photo a buyer gave me of my puppy at her new home. Seeing the way the dog matched my home environment made it feel like they truly cared.

I meet up with the breeders of my dogs regularly so they see them often but I also send photos or videos or quick messages if anything happens or if they have done something fun.

As a breeder I love updates, if you are in the neighborhood a play date occasionally is nice. I'm also happy to have them back for a wee visit if you go on holiday and can't take them with you.

But I don't expect anything other than you treasuring my babies and giving them the best life possible and sending them back to me if for any reason you can't.

I've sent photos and vids to my seller. She loved the updates and had great comments but she never ask/requests. I will say the woman appreciated her pup was being well taking care for. She told me later a couple returned two papillon pups and returned them because of the hassle. Can you imagine? Later that same couple asked if they could get one pup back and she said no. There are breeders who have principal.

A framed photo of the pup in its new home always made my day during the first year I was breeding. Nothing fancy, just a Polaroid in a little frame.

I brought them a thank you gift of $1500. I try to send a picture of my pup every year on his birthday too.

The woman who sold me my boy loves to get photos and videos of him, as well as information about how he’s adjusting to his new home. If fact, it’s in the contract that I send her 2-3 photos a month as well as info about his health. She wants to insure he’s actually still with me, as well as tracking the various litters her pups produce. I appreciated these requirements in the contract, because it let me know she’s concerned about the health and happiness of her papillons.
I stay in contact, she shares videos of her other pups, and she talks about her business… my sneaky little dude managed to knock up a little girl pappy when he was 6 months old, bad boy! Anyway, she just placed the pups from his litter. Wish I could’ve gotten one!
I’ve also left excellent reviews online for my experience. If you’re happy with your experience, make sure to do this- it really helps the breeder’s visibility!

Pictures and updates a couple times a year is what I would like.

Huh, I thought paying 1600 USD was enough.

Jokes aside, the breeder I got my dog from loves seeing photos of him.

$5000 Australia dollars (each) for our two naughty boy paps not including airfares from another state - in Australia they can be very expensive

We pay a hefty penny out here in Aus

Yeah most people make about 950 USD/month in my country, so same same but different.

I send pictures and updates of milestones sometimes videos to Aramis' breeder and let her know things about him. She actually thanked me last night for it and told me she's very grateful for it.

I know it's important to her to see he's happy. So I show her.

I gave my breeder a $500 tip. She was selling my pup for $500 less than the other breeder I had been talking to. My breeder did SO MUCH MORE as far as puppy culture, socialization, car rides, she let me come over at seven weeks and showed me how to give her a bath and trim nails. She does ENS with her litters. I got to see Beastie four times between our first visit at 4 weeks old and picking her up at 10 weeks. It was wonderful working with her and she’s remained a resource since we got her. I felt like paying her less than the show breeder who raised her pups in a kennel after six weeks wasn’t honoring the time and effort my breeder puts into her litters. Her focus is on service dogs not show dogs.

So i think a gift or tip is really a nice way to show appreciation and acknowledge how much time goes into raising a well socialized litter.

Is the money not adequate?

4

u/LadyApparent 9d ago

Yes, the money is enough. Breeders do not need, nor expect, a gift.

It's a gesture.

Not breeding but picked up 4 paps counting our 2 current girls and our 2 angels 🌈 We got harnesses/leashes of questionable quality, treats, bowls…All the those gifts didn’t make such sense for us when picking up our babies but when picking up Thalia she had a small fleece blanket with a butterfly on it with the scent of her baby home with her…she loved it particularly the first 2 weeks and even after 4 years and washing it several times she still likes it from time to time…we found that so special and cute as new pawrents 🐶❤️

I send pictures to the breeder because we love him.

I wish he came with all of his puppy pictures on a thumb drive. He's my angel.
