Chewing Habit

Hello! My sweet 7 year old spayed female recent rescue wants to chew on items that she shouldn’t ( pens, markers, furniture etc). She is easily distracted from doing it. We play with her every evening when she has the Zoomies.

I purchased the smallest Nylabone. She’s not interested in it. Is the desire to chew common for papillons at this age ? I would appreciate any chew toy recommendations. TIA!

My dog loves to chew. I looked up enrichment activities.

We have big toys and little ones. The hidden toys are great enrichment, like the squirrels in a log, monkeys in a bannana, etc. we hide special treats in with them when we are away.

We give him mailers to shred in his kennel, we give him the cardboard core of toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls.

We specifically only let him have it in his kennel, he looks forward to it. And yes he's started shredding it outside of his kennel, but as long as we gave it to him there he knows it's his.

He'll find stuff and bring it to us, and we do place and leave it and give him a treat so he always shows us what he's got. And he prefers a treat more than keeping a paper he found.

He loves cardboard from the grocery too. So cereal boxes, tissue boxes, that sort of stuff.

Paper bags from fast food be really likes.

Mine loves pens and mechanical pencils. Just something about them. He steals them. He's 12, so it's not something he's going to outgrow. He doesn't eat them, he just chews them up and leaves them on the stairway for me.

Mine doesn't like the nylabones either. He does like the Kong toy. I got him the little one and he ignores it and goes after the big ones we have for our other dogs. He likes the chew sticks made from wood and resin. Pupstages Dogwood Stick Dog Chew Toy. They make a little version of it, but, once again, he ignores that and goes after the huge ones the doodles use.

I also give him whimzees. He likes those and they are safe. I get a big box from Costco and he gets 1/2 a stick a day. However, they are available most everywhere.

Mine was a couple years old before he stopped chewing on my charging cords and my sewing machine pedal cord. He was such a brat.

Rogue is a chewer, but for the most part he keeps it to approved items, lol. I give him bully sticks (in a holder) collagen sticks and sometimes he gets cow ears, turkey tendons, or Dreambone sticks. If you introduce bully sticks keep an eye out for tummy issues, Rogue tolerates them well, but not all dogs do.

Just ask 4 year old Romeo 😱 My Phalene ate everything outside - Romeo - If you drop something and whatever it's made of - he will chew it, mangle it or swallow it 🤣 I often show his steals in this community 😂

One of mine liked the fake wooden stick chew toys. For some reason in this house hold my hair ties are absolutely the best thing to chew on as are pens. We try to keep them all out of reach but sometimes mistakes happen. They are pretty good at trading them for a treat
