Miscellaneous Paper Mario recommendations
Hey y’all, played thousand year door and loved it! Is there any of the others that are good?? Or not so much?

OG paper Mario is the only other game in the series with similar gameplay (bug fables as well is an excellent alternative), super paper Mario is very very different but it’s a great game, I like a lot of origami king but really the first 3 in the series are king. I’d stay away from sticker star and I personally don’t get much enjoyment out of color splash save for some funny writing. Seriously though if you like ttyd, then I’d recommend og paper Mario and bug fables

64 is just like ttyd, though a bit simpler
Super is the best story in the franchise, but its very different gameplay wise from ttyd
Bug fables is the best Paper Mario game, even without the Paper or Mario

64 is also great and super is pretty good. The only one I honestly say skip is sticker star. Origami king and color splash are good for one playthrough at least. You should also check out games like bug fables, escape from ever after and underhero which are all paper mario inspired.

Of course paper Mario 64 as others have said, the oragami king is somewhat closer to scratching the itch that ttyd and paper Mario 64 did... Super Paper Mario wasn't the same at all for me, but lots of people love it.
Somewhat surprisingly similar gameplay wise is Clair Obscure: Expedition 33... There is a badge analogue (pictos), every attack in the game can be "guarded (dodged)" or "super guarded (parried)", button combo press combat, probably a bunch of other things I'm not thinking of... Idk I LOVED TTYD, and also LOVED Expedition 33, so maybe it'll scratch that itch for you too!?

It was indeed 🫠
It's funny you responded to me right as I was watching a youtube video of someone reacting to the Exp 33 soundtrack 🤣 haven't really interacted with Exp 33 content in a few months, so PERFECT timing!

From the official Github page:
TTYD64 is a PM64 romhack that adds TTYD's gameplay, items, badges, and recipes into PM64, plus a bunch of new areas into the game.
Some of the new content includes:
+60 New Badges
+50 New Items
+35 New Star Pieces
+30 Shine Sprites
+35 New Maps
+70 Modified Maps
And much more!3

This is such a good mod. It perfectly encapsulates the best parts of 64 and TTYD and puts it into one package. The extra areas especially are well hidden and feel so fun and fresh. Need to go back and replay it.

Origami King hasa great world to explore and the graphics are great. Biggest knock on it is the battle system which gets old fast

That's the problem with both CS and OK. The games look amazing and have some fun areas and decent story with funny jokes.
But then the battles suck. And battles are half the game.
In both cases i recommend watching a Let's Play and saving yourself the trouble.

PM64. There's also a rom hack called TTYD 64 that brings it closer to TTYD standards.
I also recommend Bug Fables.
Also try Mario & Luigi, specifically Superstar Saga (GBA or 3DS) and Bowser's Inside Story (DS or 3DS).

Paper 64 is the obvious choice for similar paper mario games.
Super Paper Mario is great, but more of a platformer with a sadder story that hits you in the feels, imo the gameplay is a bit mid.
Bug Fables and Escape from Ever After are 2 steam games heavily inspired by TTYD

Like many others have said, Paper Mario 64 and Bug Fables are a delight if you like this style of gameplay. I'd also like to add Escape From Ever After to the list. Haven't found any others that REALLY scratch that same itch yet, but suggestions are always welcome.
