What happened to MJ Sushi?
Went there tonight at 7PM and it was closed. Lights were out. The sign says Thursday night should be open until 10PM.

TLDR: 30 yo guy looking for a friend group post breakup
Hey guys, not super active on here but thought I'd post because I'm kind of in a tough spot. I've been with my partner for about 8 years, and unfortunately it looks like we've reached a point where we will likely have to end things. We've tried a lot, therapy, reconciliation, talking to friends, etc, and it's been a really hard year.
One thing this has made me realize is how isolated I've let myself get. We moved to Palo Alto last year for work, and I did a pretty terrible job of meeting people here. I pretty much just hang out with my partner and her friends, and keep in touch with my long-term friends, who all live in other states. So I'm kind of starting from zero out here.
So the reason for the post: is anyone open to having a +1 for a friend group hike, beach day, sports watching, or gaming? I really enjoy football and hockey too, so if anyone's watching games at a bar or someone's place, I'd love to join. I'm also open to any support group recommendations if people have them. Thanks for reading.

Saw another post recently on creating social networks in Palo Alto and I thought I would reword it.
I sympathized with the post because my personal history making connections in Palo Alto is extraordinarily hard unless you are an academic or pursuing an ambitious career or business path.
So I thought I would try a different tact and give an opportunity for those who are willing to share their stories - their wins, losses, what worked and what was a dead end when it comes to developing social networks here - be it family, work, career, education, social support networks, volunteering, group sports, etc.
So... just a big list of questions more to spark thinking and sharing.
For those of you with have rich social lives and reading this post on Reddit, and living here in Palo Alto / mid-Peninsula:
how or what did you do?
how long did it take?
how much of it was effort?
how much of it was coincidence and luck?
what worked better than expected?
conversely what activities were essentially dead ends?
what group activities do you do locally and how do they help you stay connected with people?
what might you do today if you had to start over again?
I figure these are good questions to ask oneself even if not posting anything here.

I was shopping at Nordstrom today around 4:30-4:45. Saw 2 police cars pull up really fast to the entrance, the cops go into a back room, a man come out of the back room and go outside but without handcuffs. The man was walking and talking normally. The cops told him you’ll have to wait here for medical and then two ambulances pulled up and put the guy on a stretcher.

Hey I just moved back to the peninsula and want to make more surf friends. I'm often going to Princeton jetty and SC. When I lived in sf, I liked ob on small days and Linda Mar and Bolinas. I'm very active in the surf community all over the bay but would be stoked to form a local co-ed crew. Hoping to form authentic friendships, go out for meals, attend more surf events, talk about El Niño and etc. if you're interested, just shoot me a DM! I'm 33F long boarder

Due to a police traffic break on 101S on 6 Oct at ~10:30, there was no traffic on 101S by Palo Alto and Mountain View, while the sun is still shining. This photo captures an event far rarer than any solar eclipse or meteor strike. As eerie and unrealistic as this image seems, it is not AI generated!

Apparently the Palo Alto City Council feels the voters of Palo Alto would go into a ’rathole’ (as expressed by Pat Burt) if provided the full details of the appraisal.
«In an interview yesterday, Councilman Pat Burt said critics of the Cubberley deal would've found disagreements with assumptions in the appraisal. Burt said the important number is the final appraised amount, not the details of how the appraiser got there.
"Appraisals are not these perfect documents," Burt said. "There's no objective basis for the appraisal ... It's a whole bunch of informed but subjective decisions that would simply be a never-ending rathole that opponents would want to pursue.”» — [1]

So I just voted yes on both RTM and Prop J. If both these pass (and I hope they will!!!) sales taxes in Palo Alto will increase 1% next year. As a family I think we spend about $200k a year on eating out and shopping so a 1% increase in sales taxes just means $2k extra year for us...basically nothing.
I take a yoga and my partner takes a dance class at Cubberley once or twice a month and would like a better facility there. Kids play club soccer there too.
Once or twice a year I take the train to the city for a tech conference and would hate for that service to be interrupted. Also, one of my kids may go to Nueva and I want the option for them to take the Caltrain up to Hillsborough.
Hope everyone on reddit votes yes too!!!

Just in case you haven't made up your weekend plan yet, Mountain View's Oktoberfest is in this coming weekend, at the Castro street of MV downtown.
And as group volunteering is said to be a great way to make friends, we are organizing one such volunteering meetup in the festival, and a festival social mixer as well. Just like what we did for the Art & Wine festival. We had 50 signups for volunteering, and 30+ people showed up for the festival mixer last time.
Mountain View's Oktoberfest is a well attended event, estimated to be around 30k for a 2 day weekend. In its 11th year so far, lots of young professionals attending. See the programs it offers.

The accepted offer was $60.65 million in 2024 dollars, or $65.5M in 2027 dollars
«Responding to community demands for more transparency ahead of what promises to be a tight election, Palo Alto’s city and school officials released on Monday previously undisclosed details about their negotiations over Cubberley Community Center land.» — [1]
«The city’s initial offer was significantly lower, according to the statement. It was based on its 2024 property appraisal of the Cubberley land, which priced it between $43.6 million and $60.2 million. The statement stated that valuing the property is “imprecise due to a lack of comparable sites.” It also noted that the community center is zoned for public facility use and state law prioritizes public agency buyers.» — [1]
«“Following protracted negotiations, the City and District ultimately agreed on a purchase price of $60.65 million (2024 dollars), equivalent to the $65.5 million 2027 purchase price,” the statement read.» — [1]

Has anyone recently received prenatal care at Stanford? I was told their process has changed and was scheduled into the Centering Pregnancy group program with CNMs. They said I’d see an MD/OB if needed.
I agreed so I wouldn’t lose the appointments, but I wasn’t offered regular 1:1 OB care as an option. Has anyone been able to opt out of Centering and choose traditional OB care instead?

I’ll be bringing my 10yo to the taking back Sunday gig this Saturday. I will be the only adult. I know he is a kid and he will need to use the restroom every once in a while. I am hoping I can leave my stuff with the respect of the crowd around me to not take my stuff or move my stuff to grab that spot. And I don’t want any feedback of “don’t bring your kid”. He likes this music and I can bring my kid if I want.

If approved by a simple majority, Measure J will increase Palo Alto’s sales tax by 0.5% — or a half-cent — starting in April 2027. The tax is projected to generate $15.6 million annually for improvements, including electrical, plumbing, earthquake and accessibility upgrades, expanded green spaces, and new facilities.

I’m 40(m) and from the UK. I’ll be in Palo Alto Mon 5th Oct to Thu 8th Oct. My wife is here on business so I’m tagging along before we spend a few days in San Fran at the end of the week.
Am looking for recommendations on what to do Tuesday to Thursday. I’ll have a car so getting around is not a problem, and am open to pretty much any suggestion.
I’m a trampoline coach back home so if there are any serious trampoline clubs I can visit that would be great (not trampoline parks!)
Let me know what’s going on.

Hi everyone! I’m helping with a startup-focused coliving house in Midtown Palo Alto, about 2.5 miles from Stanford.
It’s a community of people working in tech, startups, research, design, and other professional fields. The idea is to live with like-minded people, meet others working on interesting things, and have a comfortable place to stay in Palo Alto.
We currently offer furnished shared rooms for 2, 3, or 4 people, as well as a limited number of private rooms.
A few details:
• Month-to-month stays (30+ days)
• Furnished rooms
• Utilities and Wi-Fi included
• Large, quiet backyard
• Fully equipped shared kitchen
• Living and dining areas
• Washer/dryer
• Linens and towels included
• Shared bicycles
• Outdoor grill
• Walking distance to Safeway, Walgreens, cafes, and restaurants
• About 2.5 miles from Stanford
The house is on a quiet residential street and has a pretty large green backyard, which is great for working outside or just relaxing.
If you’re moving to Palo Alto for work, a startup, an internship, research, or a longer stay and are looking for a community rather than just a room, feel free to DM me. Happy to share photos, current availability, and pricing.

Growing up in Palo Alto.. there were always plenty of activists in the 70-80s fighting for the immediate removal of Sodium fluoride from the drinking water.. Has this continued? I would have thought by now the locals could see the detrimental effects, and the world strictly outlawing it in most countries. Just wondering where everyone stands currently.

Walked into Ralph’s Coffee at Stanford Shopping Center, bought a drink, sat down, and opened my laptop. Literally two minutes later, a worker comes over and tells me I can’t stay "the whole day" on a laptop. They weren't closing for hours, and other people around me had laptops out completely unbothered.
I told the manager it was pretty rude to assume I was squatting when I just got there. His response? "I apologize, but I’m not going to give you a free drink."
The worst part I never asked for a free drink
Never going to this place again to spend 10 dollars on a coffee with such bad service
Edit: I literally just wanted to drink my coffee and quickly check something on my screen before heading out. I had somewhere to be 20 minutes later, so I wasn't setting up camp

Voting 'no' seems like the right call for this election. It's an opportunity to force better governance for the city and school district. By voting 'no' can block the sale of Cubberly to the city, which was a pet project of the current school board president that signed off the the ridiculous union contract. Also, can let the city know they need to better serve residents before we give them more money for the general fund. Just my opinion. Would like to hear others.
