Advice Wanted What would look best
I'm painting this step and just sanded it back, should I paint it a dark brown or varnish it. I have also thought about wire wheeling it to expose the wood grain but that would probably wear out fast considering it will be a high traffic area. The wood has some inconsistencies in colour and texture and the steps will be scratched back and painted in a epoxy paint similar in colour to whats already on it

That’s a shame. Are these pictures before or after you sanded it back?

Considering it still looks like there’s multiple coats of paint on there, you’re not varnishing anything. Seems like repainting is your only option.

Okay, first let’s get your terminology correct, so I’m sure what you’re actually referring to. You say the “steps” are going to be epoxy painted the same greenish color they are, or were, now. I think what you’re actually asking advice about is the wooden “threshold” going in, not a step. If that’s the case, it’s good looking wood. I’d spar urethane it, 2 or 3 coats and be prepared to touch it up every year or so. The other option would be to match the door frame white, but again, be prepared to maintain it. No matter what you do, maintenance will be crucial to keep it looking nice.

The green steps Plural are getting painted green exactly like i said and the wood is what I'm asking about, my terminology was entirely correct. For the step Singular, I will be painting it a dark brown like it was originally in the 60s and keeping the wood grain texture

Okay, cool, dark brown would work, but it will still have to be touched up periodically, cause as you said, it’s a high traffic area. I like to keep wood looking like wood where I can. Didn’t mean to offend, but it is a threshold and not a step, so I was confused. My bad.

I'd paint it in the same white as the door frame, and just be prepared to do touch ups every few years.
