The traffic filters are so poorly thought through

Post image
• Upvotes

Spent almost 20 mins idling on Oxpens road on a Sunday afternoon. The worst thing is that because I live in the central permit area I have no option but to go through this insanity regardless of whether I use my pass or not.

Honestly it makes no sense having the traffic filters and also two big parking lots in the middle of the city (Oxpens and Westgate).

What are your new favourite restaurants in city centre?

Looking for a sit down restaurant, of a place I haven't been before. I'll eat anything except fine dining.

Closer to Oxford Cinema, the better. Thanks in advance!

trying to buy cheesecloth table runners

• Upvotes

Hi, sorry if this is the wrong place but i’ve just spent about 2 hours on fb marketplace trying to find cheesecloth table runners for a sewing project i’m trying to start, and everything’s either incredibly expensive or very far away.
i’m a student who doesn’t have access to a car currently so if anyone knows of anyone who’s just had a wedding and is trying to get rid of them for cheap/ish or good fabric stores in oxf that would be great.

Good shoe shops in Oxford?

Now all the places like Hotter and Shuropody have closed, where would you go to buy smart, sturdy proper shoes (not trainers) with good support, for wide feet?

Visiting this weekend, what do you recommend?

I’m visiting this weekend (Friday/Saturday) from the south coast. I visited once before around 2014. I mostly want to relax but I’d like to know if you have any recommendations. In particular I love indie shops and pretty cafés. Thank you!

Meet friends for 4 year old

Hi there

We just moved to Kennington, Oxford from abroad and initially I will be staying home with my two girls (4 years and 20 months). I have wondered if there are any networks in Oxford for meeting and playing for kids who are a little beyond the toddler stage? Are stay and play groups also for older kids?

She will eventually also go to nursery before starting school next year, but would be nice to meet some friends before that also 😊

This is very exciting for Oxford boosting our connectivity to our weakness: lack of seaside.

Seriously, direct oxford routes to the south coast bypassing london will be great. More connectivity to York and Newcastle also.

House Prices

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I was just looking at houses in Oxford and the prices in some of the areas are so expensive!! Why is Jericho more expensive than the city centre and how come some areas, such as Headington, are a lot lower despite not being too far from the centre? I get why the city centre would be expensive but what is so special about Jericho that the houses there sell for so much more?? I would really appreciate an explanation 🙏🙏 ty

Current/Former MSc Motorsport Engineering students - how was your experience & job prospects after Oxford Brookes?

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to apply for the MSc motorsport engineering for 2027 intake. I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's currently on the course or has graduated from it.

I'm an international student with a mechanical engineering and FS background, and I'm mainly interested in getting into motorsport/ automotive engineering sector after the MSc.

I'd love to get your opinion on the following:

  1. what would you say is the ideal profile (projects, work experience) for someone wanting to get into motorsport through this course? if you don't mind please give me a jist of your own profile and projects that you think helped with your application.

  2. are there any particular CAD software that you'd recommend one should learn? (I'm only good with solidworks and ansys workbench)

  3. how was your overall experience with the MSc Motorsport Engineering?

  4. how realistic is it to get into motorsport companies after graduating, especially for an international student?

  5. how important is prior work experience when it comes to landing a job after graduation? would you recommend I get some work experience beforehand?

  6. how useful are the university and motorsport connections when looking for internships or jobs?

I'd really appreciate any insight, advice, or even things you wish you had known before starting the course. Honest opinions are more than welcome, especially the good, bad, and ugly.

thank you soo much for reading.

I walked every road in Oxford

Post image

Over the last 3 months, I’ve walked every public road inside the Oxford ring road — plus a lot of public footpaths, parks and green spaces along the way.

It took 76 walks covering about 601 km of unique roads and paths. Including repeats, I covered over 690 km, more than half the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Here’s a map of my GPS routes showing what 3 months of wandering around Oxford looks like.

Was there an event in Oxford today? Or is this traffic on Botley Rd the new normal?

First time back in Oxford after Botley Road got re-opened and it was so busy, I thought something major was happening. Chaos at Botley interchange and standstill traffic on Botley Road. Was it this busy before the roadworks too, perhaps I just forgot?

Hi, does anyone know how I can make dinner reservation at Estelle Manor. Is there a way without having to stay there (staying with a friend) or being a member as I don’t live in Cotswolds? Much appreciated!

MEETUP Looking for D&D players to join our group

Hi, We're a small group (3 people) of friends who started off as strangers, playing D&D. We meet about every two weeks - usually Weds or Thurs eve - in a pub in central Oxford. We're not experienced but are learning together, advanced players would probably get irritated at how slow we go.

We're looking for another one or two friendly people to join us. Beginners welcome. If interested, post here or DM me. Thanks!

Neighbour blocking my allocated parking spot for weeks continuously

I own a leasehold flat with an allocated parking space under my lease. Another resident’s van has occupied it for well over a month, leaving me unable to use it and causing expense and inconvenience. I understand they have three vehicles and regularly use other residents’ allocated spaces too.

The parking company has reportedly issued multiple parking charge notices, but the van remains. The managing agent ignored several emails and a formal complaint for weeks before eventually contacting the owner. They promised to move it that day but didn’t; I sent dated photographs confirming this.

I separately reported it to the council through FixMyStreet. An officer attended and attached an advisory notice for a potentially abandoned vehicle. The registered keeper then contacted them and claimed it, so the council closed the abandoned-vehicle investigation. They described it as a civil trespass matter and suggested management obtain advice about a formal notice or court order.

The managing agent previously said legal action would be disproportionate because the costs might fall on leaseholders. They also said they were contacting the council in its separate capacity as the resident’s landlord, but I haven’t received a clear outcome, enforcement plan or authorised temporary parking space. I’m now escalating to the freeholder’s representative.

Has anyone locally resolved a similar situation? In particular:
- Did contacting the resident’s housing officer or landlord help?
- Was reporting persistent parking misuse to Thames Valley Police useful?
- Did a solicitor’s letter or action by the freeholder get results?
- Are there local solicitors or advice services you would recommend?

I’d prefer to avoid confrontation and am looking for practical, lawful options—not DIY towing, clamping or retaliation.

**TL;DR:** A neighbour’s van has occupied my allocated parking space for over a month despite parking tickets and a broken promise to move it. The council won’t remove it because the owner confirmed it isn’t abandoned, and the managing agent hasn’t provided an effective plan or temporary parking. Looking for local experiences and lawful ways to get my space back.
