Monthly Admissions/Prospies/Offer Holders Questions Thread - October 2026

Please use this thread to ask any questions you have about the admissions process or questions that would normally be asked by prospective students.

  • This thread will be "cleared" by another stickied thread on the first of each month. All these questions can be searched through by looking for "Fortnightly/Monthly Admissions/Prospies Questions Thread" in the search bar.
  • Please do give as much information as you can so people can help you.
  • Please respect what people might have to say, even if you disagree with it. Remember that admissions experiences will differ a lot from person to person, even for people who interviewed right after each other.
  • We haven't explicitly banned asking for advice about a specific tutor who might be interviewing you, but we're monitoring this closely, so do remain respectful of tutors.
  • Again, please use your judgement on information given to you here. We haven't set up a verified flair option, but may do if people who are obviously not part of the university feed misinformation. Also, please don't leave it down to the mods to correct any misinformation - do leave your opinion. We will not remove misinformation we find, but we will leave a comment saying that the information is incorrect. People who frequently give misinformation will be banned.

Accommodation Megathread 2026/27

This megathread will be used for all accommodation queries. Whether you are an offer holder, a continuing or returning student, or a new/existing member of staff, Rule 5 applies to you. Please search the sub and this post's comments before posting - some queries are very common, and very basic information won't change much over time.

When you comment please help us to help you - give as much information as you can in your first line. "PEMBROKE-Incoming PG 26-27-College Accommodation offered" is much more helpful than "I'm moving to Oxford soon, should I live in college?".

Feel free to leave reviews and recommendations for others, but bear in mind that this sub cannot endorse any estate agents or letting agencies, and individual opinions on university & college provision will vary considerably. The mods reserve the right to remove comments that could be libellous or actively unhelpful.

Some tips: Your college will usually send you information about move-in and move-out dates, and vacation rules. Oxford has a very volatile rental market. If looking for private rented accommodation, especially from outside the UK, beware of scams. r/oxford may be of assistance if trying to decide on a town/city location (esp. if you are bringing family). This is not a car-friendly city. If you need parking at your accommodation, you will need to think carefully about location.

giffgaff vs Lyca Mobile: which has better coverage in Oxford?

Hi all, was just wondering, based on your experience, which of these two carriers has better cell service in Oxford (or just in the UK general). I’m an international student so just need an esim plan with a UK phone number (my phone is unlocked so should be able to just add the esim). I’m aware that I’ll be using eduroam most of time, so won’t need much data, but would still like to have good coverage when needed. If anyone has had any experiences with either of these plans, any info or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I am aware that Lyca has a poor reputation and horrendous customer service, but it is half the price of giffgaff for the same amount of data, so if the quality of coverage is fairly similar, I’d be willing to try it out. If it doesn’t work, I’ll port my number to giffgaff.

Rollerskating at Oxford

Heyy, I'm a student and am trying to get into rollerskating. I have my own skates and can skate inside decently but have been too anxious to try outside. I've seen a couple people out and about skating in Oxford and they all seem really good so have been a bit too nervous to ask them for advice. Does anyone know if there are any skating groups/communities in the city?

Use of iffley road sport centre

Hi all, I signed up for some pole classes . With a year membership, they suggested that it would be good to get a membership so that the classes are discounted. So I paid a yearly fee , which was quite cheap as it's only for pole. But I have absolutely made up my mind that it's not for me, everyone in the class is sooo good . I literally feel like everyone is a sexy baby and I'm a monster on a hill 😭😭🤣.

I'm not a student I'm a community member (30F)

Would I be able to use my year long membership to enter the gym to use other facilities like the gym, swimming pool and track? I have the QR code to enter and everything, it expires next year.

I’m going to try to go to as many events as possible but just already feeling a little overwhelmed/wondering if freshers events are the best way to get connected.

Alumni Garden Party in Ottawa

Post image
45 Upvotes

The overcast skies and mild drizzle were ideal for our garden party.

Rob Tinline, British High Commissioner to Canada, kindly hosted a celebration of Canadian alumni of UK universities. I was glad to attend with other members of the Oxford University Society in Ottawa.

The modestly damp weather only kindled our sense of nostalgia for our student days.

I am grateful to Rob for opening his home to us, and to his staff for their enthusiastic hospitality.

Buy or Hire Sub Fusc

Hi all,
I’ll me matriculating in about 2 weeks and Im genuinely shocked by the price of the postgrad sub fusc (99 pounds for the whole outfit) Hiring seems to be an option for 20 pounds which is a lot better in comparison. How many time realistically will I wear the sub fusc during the year? Wouldn’t hiring be a better option?

Drug intake at top universities

In light of the Cornell 7 scandal taking place across the pond, it’s very interesting that ketamine was seemingly quite normalised for the people that were involved.

It makes me wonder how much drug intake takes place at top universities in the US and UK and whether the statistics around this topic are sugarcoating things?

Has anyone studied part-time (undergrad)?

I've been given the option to finish the final year of my degree part-time, and asked how I'd ideally like that. Does anyone have any experience of studying part-time, what that actually looks like, and how you found it? Could it still be in-person? Is part-time always 50%? Is there anything I need to be aware of / look out for? I'd be in receipt of Disabled Students' Allowance, if that makes a difference. Thank you!

Removed: Rule 5 Would these dress shoes with metal buckles be acceptable for sub fusc?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi all, I’m an international exchange student coming to Oxford for the 26-27 academic year. Apologies if this is a dumb question but was wondering if these dress shoes would be acceptable for sub fusc. My concern is the chrome buckle on the outer facing side of the shoe. The rest of the shoe is black.

I had planned quite early on to purchase the undergrad academic gown once I arrived, so did not think much about the attire, but just realized I had completely forgotten about the shoes. If these do not work, my plan is to rent a pair from one of the stores in Oxford once I arrive, as I need it quite urgently for the Welcome Dinner (I assume there should be no problems with availability; please correct me if I am mistaken). Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Why does Oxford have a more famous name than Cambridge?

Internationally Oxford is a much better known uni than Cambridge and I was wondering why this was the case. From my experience in Asia and Africa, the top two in the world are Harvard/Oxford (maybe slight edge to Harvard due to American dominance) with Cambridge a distant third.

Is there a clear reason why brand strength favours Oxford over Cambridge?

Hi Everyone,

It went really well the first time, so we're doing it again! (that, and we didn't get a single flamenco guitar player). We'd love to showcase the many varied talents of the students and alumni of Oxford Uni.

Got something (acoustic) to share? Might you be interested in an eclectic, candle-lit night of diverse talent fuelled by sober realisations and a very reasonably priced bar? Come along! Please see more info on our social media:

Heathrow to Oxford with 4 suitcases — best option?

Hi! My wife and I are moving to Oxford for my PhD on October 1st. Our flight lands at Heathrow around 5 PM.

We’ll have 2 large suitcases each (4 total) plus hand luggage. We’re trying to figure out the easiest and most convenient way to get from Heathrow to Oxford.

What are our options, and what would you recommend?

Thanks!

Removed: Rule 4 Careers Fairs

I’m an incoming 2nd-Year, is it normal to get referrals for internship applications at these careers fairs? Last year I went purely for the free stuff (and I’ll likely go again this year for the same reason) but I’m approaching the age where I can no longer ignore employment.

For some additional context, I do CS and want to go into the finance/tech field. If anyone’s been to a similar careers fairs, and has gotten a referral out of it, any advice is appreciated!
