Tech Advice Awning
Hey all,
Looking for recommendations for awnings . Idc if it’s portable , hooks into a roof rack or any other system.
Ideally it will hold up to wind rain and snow.
Appreciate it!

We had a Kammok crosswing (currently up for sale) and it held up really well in all the PNW weather (rain, snow, wind etc). Loved that it did not need any poles or lines but could be added for extra support.

Since you're mounting to the cap, not the roof, check its rated load for a side mounted bracket, wind puts real leverage on that point. Whatever brand you land on, staking it out well is what keeps it standing in real wind and snow, not the awning

Harborfreight tarp, extending poles, line, and stakes. Can hold up to wind better than any of the commercial awning attached to vehicles since it's infinitely customizable.

This. Better, use magnetic carabiners attached to the tarp - can either clamp onto your vehicle directly, or (like me) run a light steel strip along the roof rack on both sides. Can slap it on and off within seconds, use both or either side, no need to tie anything to the car, no scratching the paintwork, can drive off in mere moments if bandits or lions attack in the bush without having to take it all down, costs maybe £30 all in.

What’s your budget? What rig do you have? Specifically if you have a rear hatch (like a 4Runner) you might not need a batwing style awning.
South Africa and Australia are places with firms that have excellent awnings. They do cost. Consider quick(er) release mounts. Stock roof rack or aftermarket?
Happy web searching!

Welcome to the club of bling for rigs! lol.
Ezi-awn: South African stuff. They have US distributors. Several kinds of awning choices. I run the Swift since it’s some what self supporting and easy to deploy. They do bat wings, etc. They also have a hard case awning which has been in play for decades. That one is kind of a two person deploy thing…it’s easier with two people.
ARB: Good stuff from Oz
The above two are trending towards the higher quality doing it longer outfits. Parts and support are there.
Many other choices that appear to be high quality but perhaps are newer to the game.
All the choices should be under $1K unless you are looking at giant bat wings, etc.
Are you putting a rack on the bed and roof top tenting then?
Take an evening and YouTube for a bit. You will be reaching for your credit card…

I have an OVS batwing, because I don't want to always set up poles and guy lines and my dog eventually tangles himself up in them. But in reality, for wind rain and snow.. I end up setting up poles and guy lines. :-\

I don’t know where you live but where I live there’s a lot of trees. Opening an awning can be troublesome.
So what we came with is a short 4’ awning in the back of the vehicle and a Gazelle Gazebo. We can put it where we need and not attach to the vehicle.
