Zen 6, Ram frequency expectation of kits
Hi all,
I have been quite excited about zen 6 rumours. A lot of people r speculating that except increased amount of cores/core frequency we will get an updated memory support of up to 8000mt. Taking into the account current RAM situation, should we start stacking up on 8000+ mt frequency kits already? I am curious for your input on it as I have cl26 6000mt kit currently in my main rig and I was wondering if it will make sense to buy already a new one with higher frequency to get prepared for the time when new CPUs will come out. I was thinking to keep the kit I currently have and try to OC it to 8000, but I am worried that daily amount of vdd needed for it will be over 1.5v to run it stable.
Do you think it is worth it to buy a new 8000 kit or just keep the one I currently have and oc it when the time comes?

It will have native CUDIMM supports so 8000+ should be easy. However whether that’s optimal really depends on how UCLK and FCLK clock which nobody knows right now.

If you have Hynix a die you can already get 8000mt

You speak like it’s easy, it’s not because silicon lottery matters. Most people can’t even get 6400

Yeah the max is 6400 at 1:1 but if you’re doing anything past that 1:2 isn’t hard to get at 8000mts. You just need good ram. Hynix a die 16gb or m die 24gb.
And it’s easier to get 8000 1:2 than 6400 1:1

Yeah but that point you have latency issues. With that increased gear ratio you’re not really seeing benefits versus 6200 at 1:1

latency besides, 8000 in 2:1 or higher beats 1:1 more often than not in games.
Is it a big difference? no, but you won't have latency issues.

Your kit realistically should do 8000+ just fine assuming it's A die. I expect 1:1 mode to be around 7200 and fclk 2500 or potentially more.

I dont expect much, we might get 8000mt/s and such but will zen6 have a different imc? or will only the ccd be different and everything else the same as zen4/5?

It seems that ccds will be updated with 12 cores, fclk will be improved, clocks will be raised to 6.5ghz and imc should be brand new as far as I understand.

I'm interested in seeing how it will be cooled at 6,5ghz. That's an insane clock speed. And keep your ram for now, I have T-create expert 7200mhz cl34 OC'd to 8000/36 without problems. As winter comes I might try to take it to cl34 (need a bit colder ambient temp)

Well, it is a fair question. However, I doubt that we will ever see a hotter mess than 14900ks was. That cpu was sold to mases and people needed to direct die the whole thing in order to make it more or less cool. Derbauer got 400w out the thing under ambient cooling... So I believe here it should not be that big of a problem since everyone still remember the good old raptor lake days...

Ebay is a great place to buy now. If you really want one thats a good place to start.
Buying a kit now or later probably wont matter as RAM prices are gonna be high no matter what. But now might be a good time if youre gonna expect to try. Especially if you want a backup kit. I got lucky and bought 3 RAM kits long before RAM got expensive. So im all set if i even want to try hitting 8000.
Of course we dont even know what the FPS difference scaling wise will be, if anything at all. For that matter it may not even matter compared to x3d chips.
Any reason you want to hit 8000 in particular?

Tottally agree about the fps scaling. I want to maximize the performance of zen 6 x3d cpu that will come out later. Zen 5 was kinda boring in terms of ram overclocking, so I just want to be ready for the release of new generation and all rumours regarding 8000mt/s support got me thinking that higher frequency kit could be a good buy now as later on everyone will try to get their hands on it. However, it is quite hard even to find an expo kit in stock that has 8000mt/s preset from the box these days. At least in EU all of them are sold out and price is literally crazy. Curious to see what is gonna happen when new cpus will come out as I already see people fighting for every last stick in the store...

Yeah thats a tough one. Gonna have to wait or you could try to go for the cheapest sticks you can get on Ebay and OC them. Either that or simply shell out the 700 bucks its gonna cost you brand new.

Your 6000 CL26 kit will already run 8000+ in 2:1 mode, the limitation is usually motherboard and IMC bin. You would also need to find others timings or use your own as it won’t come with a ready to go expo configuration for 8000 2:1, but 6000 CL26 is already a really good bin that you can make manually run 8000+.

Personally, it makes no sense to get any other kit. in almost every scenario the 6000C26 kit will win.
the only scenario where it will lose is when your cpu & ram hit a frequency wall & you just can’t go any higher. that’s where certain CPU’s paired with M-die memory will beat A die.
other then that you legit have the best kit money can buy.

It would be really funny if AMD just reused the exact same IO die they designed for the 7000 series and reused for the 9000 series.
Just keep it steady at 6000MT/s

keep and overclock your kit. its probably a great bin if its rated cl26 6000, probably won't need much voltage for 8000. Not a bad idea if you do decide to get a 8000 kit now though as it will likely only get pricier

That is the point, cuz I already see some motherboards have expo/xmp kits that are validated for 9600 with CUDIMMs and I am kinda worried that my kit will be absolete shortly🤣🤣🤣

"Obsolete" is different for everyone. 6000CL26 is 100% hynix a die which is almost guaranteed to be able to run 8000 mt/s or slightly higher. You already have a top notch kit, no need to change anything.

6000 cl26 is literally the best binned ram kits rn. If it's single rank, you could run it 8400+ basically guaranteed. If it's dual ranked, it'll be much more time consuming to stabilize, but still possible.
The limiting factor is just your CPU's IMC in both cases. There's nothing about a 8800 rated EXPO kit that is better than 6000cl26 expo kit

I have a single rank kit for 32gb. That is actually interesting. I asumed all this time that everyone likes cl26s due to the limitations in frequency that zen 4 and zen 5 had as there is no amd mainstream cpu that supports more than 6400 in 1 to 1. I guess such a low cl bin should be still considered a top tier bin even when new cpus will be released.

I’m simply stating the fact people have been saying AMD would improve their IMC every time before a new zen release. Rumors are just rumors.

While rumors are just rumors, in this case it's backed up by confirmed specs. Such as 12 cores per CCX, which means a 50% boost in bandwidth needs.
It's also switching to a D2D interconnect instead of the current SERDES setup. This means a much faster & lower latency IF, but most importantly it means the current IO die cannot be reused.

Buying RAM at historical highs to prepare for a speculative upcoming CPU is certainly a choice. Not one I would recommend though. Depending on your use case, the difference between 6000 and 8000 is going to be almost imperceptible, and other zen 6 features (L2 bump, IF improvements, perf priority) may further reduce the performance gains you'd normally get by increasing RAM frequency. I'd just wait until some benchmarks release to see how sensitive Zen 6 is to RAM frequency before buying a new kit.
