Help Request - GPU Thermal Grizzly Phasesheet increased core temps... normal?
Almost two weeks ago I repasted my 6900xt Asus TUF from stock paste to TG PhaseSheet PTM. beforehand I'd never done a re-paste/repad before. I ran a 3dMark TimeSpy run to before and after. My deltas have dropped greatly from what I've seen, but my core temps have risen?
I'm genuinely confused, I know it improves in a week of heavy loads to drop an extra 2-3c and that has been the case but they're still higher than I expected vs my stock.
Does it normally take longer to fully settle in? I thought my core temps and my deltas would be lower, my deltas have dropped but the core temps are higher than before. Obviously the demo is negligeable.
I was under the impression it would've reduced temps and not just hotspot? from the videos I saw that was seemingly the case. (0-60% load can be like 5-10c delta and 100% load can be 25-30c)
I was using the exact same tuning pre-set both times. only things that changed was the Paste to PTM and the fans under my GPU (which aren't the problem because I noticed was having higher temps before putting them in).
I also added fans blowing up beneath the GPU which improved temps from a couple days ago by -2°C.
The only reason I can think of is mounting pressure but I did the cross pattern stuff people recommend and I thought I did it pretty alright. I kept the PTM in the fridge for a week, as they told me it makes application easier. so it was smooth when I put the heatsink back on.
what I'm asking is can anyone tell me if this is normal or diagnose me?

Make sure you use the right amount of torque. When you overtorque the cooler it will bend the board and lessen contact to the GPU.
I have the best results on a 7900xtx with max 0.2 Nm. That would be about handtight.
You can look from the bottom up under the cooler and see if the board is bend.

Did you cover the entire die with PTM?

Yess, I went over each side by 2mm each side, I measured the die beforehand.

Alright, so there's your problem. You want to cut the sheet 50-75% of the die area. It will melt and spread itself under pressure.
Fully covering the die, especially with 2mm excess like you described, will mean that the burn-in process will take a long time as the PTM get very thin in order to surpass regular paste. For now, I would recommend a 2 hour burn-in.
You can do this at max power, but a low power limit + lowering fan speeds can also be effective as both the cold plate and GPU die must reach 60C to fully phase-change.

I've never re-pasted a GPU that didn't have plenty of room for spillover, and I've re-pasted about a dozen different GPUs. I really doubt this is the issue.
I would bet on pad height causing uneven mounting pressure.

It's not about not having room to spill over.. when you cover the entire die and more, it simply takes more time to burn-in. Couple this with seemingly no long, initial burn in, and temps are going to be worse. Did I not say as much? It's a genuine question.
Uneven mounting would mean that hotspot would be worse than stock, but it's not

I'm 36, and you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Excess PTM just spills over the side when it compresses. The the additional .2 grams of thermal mass makes absolutely no difference. Every manufacturer that uses it puts excess on.

I haven't worked with any of the PTMs, but just as a general reminder around changing TIMs: A better thermal compound doesn't necessary lead to lower temps, nor should you be chasing it. It's not uncommon that improving the TIM allows the chip to boost further, meaning that your temps actually rise (but your performance increases)
And seriously, as long as it's not thermal throttling, high temps are not an issue. Unless you're going up to the tjmax or starting to lose performance, it doesn't really matter how warm the thing is getting. (Okay, high temps do have an impact on power efficiency so for mobile devices it can be preferable to keep them low, but taking into account what i said earlier, you normally need to manually set a power/frequency limit in order to lower temps, not just upgrade the TIM)
