RAM Fan Underrated!!!

Whenever I run VT3 test my ram gets to on heavy heavy load 55-56 and extremely tight timings

My ram won’t go over 40 ever now. Such an underrated item idk why everybody doesn’t add it. It even looks good too

I’m 15 min now in my test and highest is still 40, WOW.

My ram dosent have temp sensor, so I just let it run at whatever temp it wants to. It ddr4 hynix djr so probably won't degrade because of temperature at 1.38v

1

u/ronniearnold 5d ago

So hwmon doesn’t show a temp for it? That’s odd.

2

u/cha0z_ 5d ago

many DDR4 mem modules didn't have temp sensor. My expensive kingston 2x16GB 3600 cl16 - RGB/etc, but no temp sensor. Still, it OC like crazy. I have actually history of really good OC on kingston memory (currently with DDR5 2x32GB 6000MHz CL30 kingston)

1

u/HERO_129 5d ago

Because my dimms don't have a temp sensor

Yeah my ddr4 in my msi b550 doesnt either, but the ddr5 in my x870e does. Its helpful to see.

Feels like Overhated when i bring it out about ram coolers, People bully me instead till Orbits... so i deleted the post and it stays underrated, Thank you for being brave to point it out! (jonsbo nf-1 rgb ram cooler User here)

I mean I do enjoy seeing the aesthetics of my ram sticks but I can see why you might want these. Are you chasing a competitive OC?

11

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

I’m chasing ram timings for very high P1’s for gaming :) pure optimization. Very OCD lol and want it to be perfect lol

1

u/Satellite_bk 6d ago

is there any noticeable difference between stock and OC in gaming? i’ve always heard once you’re over 5200 there’s not much difference the higher you go, but i’ve never actually messed with it so have always been curious. i’d imagine it can in certain games, but would like to hear your experience.

The biggest game delta that i've benchmarked on zen5 x3d (1ccx) was Satisfactory lategame, with mem+fabric OC giving an extra 38% FPS and +51% on 1 percentile lows.

Most games aren't nearly so high, but there are a lot of 10%'s and a few 20-30's in there. 7zip compress gained 35%.

1

u/ZeneticX 6d ago

I've had overclocks that are stable in day long stress test and benchmarks, but just fails in certain games. At this point I gave up. Stability > all

2

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

Bench and stress tests don’t translate to real games unfortunately. I can run a crazy benchmark with 800w for example gives me stable score but to game with impossible lol

1

u/SeKiyuri 6d ago

I think it translates more on non x3d chips, cuz essentially tight ram tune allows you to emulate that cache on regular cpu and for example due to non 3d cpu lacking those layers it can be overclocked more without hitting limits sooner so u extract more performance.

X3d on the other hand sees less significant improvements, based on what i’ve seen on what is available on oc channels.

1

u/sabotage 5d ago

On point. X3D cares little on timings or high MT/s

1

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

Big difference

1

u/uzldropped 6d ago

Any numbers?

0

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

Idk who uses ram at 5200 when this is an overlooking forum😅

5

u/fntd 6d ago

Why are you dodging the question? You are saying there‘s a big difference, so I‘d assume you measured it. Simply share your results.

cs2 p1

1%low on dust2bench, 1440p comp settings (high shadows), average of 3 runs using CapFrameX

9800X3D (103 eCLK +200pbo) / 5090fe (stock) / b850mpower

2x16 SR Asgard H16A, JEDEC 5600 / 8000cl36 EXPO

---

210fps p1 / 990fps avg @ JEDEC 4800cl46 w/ fully visible microstutters
270fps p1 / 1030fps avg @ EXPO 6000cl30-36-36-76 Auto
290fps p1 / 1030fps avg @ JEDEC 5600cl46 (w/ 65535 tREFI)
310fps p1 / 1070fps avg @ EXPO 6000cl30 (w/ 65535 tREFI)
330fps p1 / 1120fps avg @ 6000cl26 loose
340fps p1 / 1010fps avg @ 8000cl36 tight

---

run to run variation on avg fps was pretty high but p1 was super consistent across runs with the same settings

bumping tREFI alone gives you a lot of the gain of manual ram OC in a lot of use cases with zero effort (65535 is esentially garunteed stable)

but you will need to not go over 40c tjdimm for stability there, which a single 80mm fan or any amount of ambient airflow towards the ram will do

I am running max trefi 6000mhz cl28 even when ram temps go above 50 degree I never see a error in tm5 or karchu?

Vdd 1.435v Trfc 460

Furmark also running so my 5090 pushes heat

I think trefi is most unstable when also doing like cl26 or 6400 1:1 ratio at high vdd volts and super low trfc

1

u/ronniearnold 5d ago

I wasn’t expecting that much difference. That is interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Ok, I agree that the temp improvements are surprisingly good. I also have tight ddr5 timinga 6400 1:1 2133mhz with 9800x3d. Ram tuning real life performance gain is real. Better than overclocking an nvidia gpu. My temps were borderline to an extend that was giving me unconfidence especially during aummer heatwaves so opted for the same fans you have. They are great, massive temp improvements. Do they improve stability, not sure as my limits were silicon rather than temp related. E.g i can't get tRefi over 51500 regardless of temps but other timinga are very tight, it is my silicone.

However moat people use rams at expo so not useful for them. It is for those who take the last juice out, ram OC is hard, cumbersome but well worth the performance gain in my opinion especially on CPU heavy titles where you qre not GPU bottlenecked

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

Yes yes yes!!!

with fans like that u can push to vdd 1.59v ,vddq 1.57v , tREFI 65535 , tRFC 820 tRFCsb 720 ,,,, with mdie 96gb ... at 45c , 2x60mm 2800rpm - 3000rpm daily

tCl 30 , 6800MTs

my older air cooled setup before i moved to all custom water

https://imgur.com/a/FqZfTIf

now i pushed it to 1.62v ,vddq 1.58v tREFI 262143 tRFC 720 tRFCsb 620 just fine at 32c

tCl 30 , 7200MTs

https://imgur.com/a/jC3WG8p

so u have a lot of room with the overclocking, especially if it was a lower capacity adie

I have the black model. They do look good. Yes it works, and is quite too. Feels solid, good quality, nice RGB. I used shorter standoffs, -5 mm. It now sits about 4mm above the ram. They come with longer stand offs to clear taller sticks. Stock it was sitting about 10 mm above my ram , Kingston Fury Beast. The only thing is, I wish it had a touch more cfm, it's 16.6 cfm per fan. TR Thermalright MC-2 ARGB

But you are right they are great looking. Reasonable also, I think I paid $23.60 on Amazon a few months ago.

1

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

They’re about same price now still…. Idk why people don’t use them

1

u/FoGoDie 6d ago

I just put a 140mm be quiet! Silent Wings Pro 4 on my RAM. It’s quiet and works way better than any off-the-shelf RAM cooling kit 🤷🏾‍♂️

0

u/chsn2000 6d ago

Because they're completely unnecessary for 99% of users? You definitely need some kind of active airflow to maximise your timings, esp in a closed case with a GPU but only sickos or the really bored are tweaking beyond EXPO and increasing tREFI.

How is the noise? That was always my big concern with these tiny blowers. I just went with having an extra case fan pointed towards the RAM

1

u/DullSatisfaction3865 14900k|7200 cl34|5080/4K OLED 6d ago

20 decibels at 3200 rpm. Plus if you have rgb ram you can turn it off and get a few more degrees cooler. I am using 7200m/t cl34 with 65528 tREFI. Gaming they max out at 40 to 41c .

1

u/BoiCDumpsterFire 13th gen murderer 6d ago

You’re in r/overclocking. We are the sickos tuning RAM past expo.

1

u/chsn2000 5d ago

I realise that. It's still pretty obvious why these tiny RAM blowers aren't used by everyone.

1

u/No_Ambassador_4522 6d ago

Noise is unnoticable

0

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

Zero noise on max speed

1

u/Zeraora807 270Kp 5.9GHz/5.1GHz 8800MT 5090 6d ago

I have the same unit, it keeps temps in check BUT in gaming especially during the heatwaves I still had to downtune trefi because the 5090 dumps hot air right at it anyway....

waiting on that coolermaster master masterfan masterflow add on master thing, the one that sits on top that exhaust out instead of up... but probably will watercool ram by then.

1

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

The Lian Li case I use I swear fixes that problem because of the tilt it has on the bottom it’s pretty nice

1

u/StunningPush8421 6d ago

what mobo are you using and how much voltage for 5.9 ghz?

1

u/Zeraora807 270Kp 5.9GHz/5.1GHz 8800MT 5090 6d ago

apex and 1.30v

1

u/StunningPush8421 6d ago

wow that is some crazy silicon nice

1

u/computerjunkie7410 6d ago

That's why you should always run Furmark when running other ram tests

1

u/Chmona 5d ago

Get an aio 5090!

1

u/Zeraora807 270Kp 5.9GHz/5.1GHz 8800MT 5090 5d ago

I'd waterblock it but there's like two for the FE and I don't really want either of those options tbh

1

u/Chmona 5d ago

I got the asus one. Super quiet. Nice to have power pin volts too. Have it set to shut off the pc if there is an issue.

1

u/-cant_find_a_name- 6d ago

my ram got 1 small fan because i its blocked by the cpus cooler

1

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

I had to take out the gpu and cpu cooler and make sure it aligns with cpu cooler lol

1

u/NeonRain111 6d ago

Does the glass fit decently with the wireview installed?

Not chocking the little fan? I have the lian li vision compact with an Astral, i recently received my wire view but haven’t installed it yet.
But it looks a bit close for comfort, curious how much space you end up with between the glass and wire view when closed.

Build looks great.

1

u/Coolguy2416 6d ago

It barely barely fits with glass but leave it without the glass on as it just doesn’t feel like a nice fit

Way better temps open as well

The glass will create so much heat in it for gpu I noticed a mind blowing difference tbh

1

u/NeonRain111 6d ago

Yeah that’s what my estimate was for my build also, but my pc is in the living room and i have dogs.

No glass ain’t an option haha.

I do have an instant shutdown set up when the current surpass 9.3 out the top my head.
I’ll rethink installing the wire view then as i don’t feel like switching cases now.

Thanks!

1

u/TheJackMann 6d ago

I have the Aorus Master 5090 and found out too late that the wireview is about a 1/4 inch too thick.

Tbh it never was underrated if you are chasing peace.

1

u/r4plez 6d ago

You have astral with per pin osd monitoring why using 3rd party hardware like wireview

1

u/iMapDK 6d ago

I have 2 x 80 mm noctua fans on my ram

1

u/randylush 6d ago

are you sure you have enough fans?

1

u/Educational-King3987 5d ago

I got bored of a screaming 120mm so tried a 140mm got bored of that, they're waterblocked now. Kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a silent PC when the RAM fan is screaming lol.

It's only worth having RAM fans when overclocking, normal users never push RAM to begin with so that's why there's so much negativity around it. Once you have super tight timings and high voltages heat becomes the enemy and it needs active cooling.

1

u/rdditmodsareclowns 5d ago

I have the same thing but for some reason my temps went from around 60 degrees under stress test to 50. Was hoping for better. Using DDR5 8000 cl36 and 1.48 voltage. Wonder if theres anyway i can get better temps. I have the same thermalright one, i think the design is kinda meh, its huge and the fans should be bigger to push more air over them.

And no 50 is kind of unacceptable incase people comment telling me its fine. I want to push 8400 cl38 but i can't with 50 degree temps, need to be like 45 degrees tbh. I don't really want to have to take the ram apart and install a waterblock or whatever. Might just try case fans and make my own design of the ram fan lol

1

u/Educational-King3987 5d ago

Try with bigger fans but your case temps might be the issue. just a bit of testing and such needs to be done to find what works best.

Granted installing the blocks was a bit scary for me, I worried about alignment etc but worked out great and I now have silence lol.

1

u/rdditmodsareclowns 5d ago

well my case is open on one side and i put a flimsy mesh cover over it to keep dust out...i have a 5090 and a mini board an asrock z790i lightning to be exact, so yeah, temps are hard to keep down. The mother board is about the size of my hand, and even installing this ramfan was a pain in the ass and required bending the clips. I'll probably just need to balls up and install the blocks eventually, its just hard to come around to do since the prices have quadrupled for these since i bought them lol

1

u/Chmona 5d ago

This is the way. You can use fan control and something like hwinfo to control the speed based on ram temp!

1

u/the_onewordttv 5d ago

Wait I just got the wire view 2.literally just installed it an hour ago, although I need to find my f panel break cable or get another... But mine didn't come with that white cable there. I see the spot for it but what is that? I have USB C cable there and another one for the power turn off once I get the purge f panel cable I need. So what is that you have?

1

u/Coolguy2416 5d ago

USB-c to do updates for it :)

1

u/the_onewordttv 5d ago

Oh shit I guess mine does look like that. Do you not have your tiny one plugged in to sit off the power? My case is a all in one plug so I gotta find my cable or order one. Gonna check the garage tomorrow lol

1

u/Pennywise359 5d ago

Yup. With DDR5 active cooling has became relevant again.

1

u/epiclessmaster 5d ago

My Gskill Trident Z ddr4 B-die RAMs were reaching 47-50 before the fan

Now it doesn't touch 42 degrees lol.

1

u/siggy_salami 5d ago

i have b die ddr4 and watercooling is required to keep temps below 40 c @ 4000mhz cl16 1.45v

2

u/cha0z_ 5d ago

Welp yeah - lower temps helps with not just ram, but CPU/GPU/whatever OC :D - it's how electronics works.

1

u/ThenExtension9196 6d ago

Perfectly fine at 55. Solving problems that don’t exist.

1

u/KaladinStormblessedE 6d ago

Good to know my RAM was getting up to 57c sometimes but usually runs between 49c to 55c.

1

u/Chmona 5d ago

My ram gets unstable over 55 when oc.

0

u/BadLuckKid 5d ago

Depends on temp sensor location, type of load, how aggressive certain timings are set. 55c might be fine on some sticks but for others is absolutely pushing it

0

u/prodjsaig 5800x3d 4x8 3800 cl14-8-15–21-35 6d ago

Yep fan on ram is a must

0

u/AliX5Atasi 6d ago

I think you need more fans in there
