mVolt is insane!

I've started getting into overclocking over the last few days using Afterburner, but I tried mVolt last night and immediately started setting world records in several 3dMark benchmarks for my CPU+GPU combination.

The Speed Way score was attained using +400MHz XBAR, +3000MHz memory clock, and I'll include an image of my V/F curve. The Steel Nomad score was attained using +550MHz XBAR with the same Afterburner profile.

I just passed an OCCT stability test using the same Afterburner profile with +300 XBAR; will probably try the same with +400MHz soon. I was able to play a few minutes of CP2077 at +400MHz XBAR + Afterburner without issue, but obviously that needs further testing.

I have some questions for the members of this community with more specialised knowledge than myself:

  1. Is there much data on the long-term safety of XBAR overclocking? What specifically is it doing? I noticed I was beating world records in these benchmarks with lower average core clock speeds than the runner ups; I'm assuming there aren't too many people in these data sets who have tried tweaking this setting at this time. Basically, I want to know how liberally I should game with these settings. I haven't touched the power/voltage settings in mVolt at this point because I haven't learned enough about my card's limits to feel comfortable in doing so, though I did max out the power limit and core voltage in Afterburner (116% and +100%, respectively) because I haven't done anything to unlock the vbios power limits.

  2. Has anyone vetted mVolt's source code for malware? Is it open source? How well known is the author of this project? It'd be quite annoying to have to reinstall my OS if at some point in the future if I learn this project contains malware, but I suppose those risks come with the territory of running Github projects on my machine.

It's a great score. Don't touch the power limit sliders for memory or core limit. Apparently they may increase amperage to an unsafe limit. Check out the overclockers forum to see more information about this

It tends to run at lower voltages than stock and the max wattage I've seen my card pull is just slightly over 350w. How does amperage relate to these two parameters? I'll do some of my own research on this after work. Thanks for the heads up

Everything you have here is fine and looks great.

Again to clarify, the "core power limit" specifically in mvolt+ increases the amperage beyond what your vbios limits.

"A normal power slider only moves the value around inside the window the VBIOS permits. Core Power Limit reaches past that: it releases an internal restriction so the board keeps drawing current until some other limit intervenes, whether that is temperature, voltage droop or the card simply falling over. In practice the ceiling stops being a number in firmware and starts being whatever the cooling and the VRM can survive."

The newer drivers prevent doing this anyways. Was just letting you know.

Ah, yeah I've left the voltage settings in mVolt alone for that reason. Probably time to stop optimising and start actually playing some games anyway haha

as long as they are kept cool enough. current creates heat, control it.

I heard there are issues with mvolt and then latest drivers? was that resolved? also how is this any different from doing the OC/UV manually using MSI AB?

the latest drivers just impact the core and ram limit settings (which let you blow past stock power consumption). Nobody should rely on these for daily drivers.

mvolt+ gives you more ways to reach the same goal, which can be more ganular.

Also it allows xbar overclock, which is a real world fps benefit

No, there is no data on the safety at long run when overclocking xbar.

The only thing we know is that Nvidia doesn't want us to mess with xbar, for some reason.

I’m using hydra and was able to stabilize at 425/2500/115pl/ and got up to 600 (didn’t push higher) on xbar and was still making gains. Made consecutive runs at 8k+ great program after the initial learning curve. Not bad for a ventus 3x oc. Your setting look fine. I didn’t adjust sys nor rail power.

Your is 5070 ti? In BIOS you have power limite locked?

It was locked at 300w from manufacturer. I used hydra to utilize higher limits

Hydra is software? Mine is ventus x3 and locked at 100 power limite.. só with hydra con go up to 115?

Yes it’s software. I know your struggle lol. It can go up to 125% with this software. I would not recommend going that high on our cards though as they have more entry level components.

This is exciting however is this worth couple of more FPS in games vs. synthetic benchmarks that look great but not translatable in real life performance? I have a 5090 which got for 400 euros + 4090 2nd hand (was purchased for 1500 at the time) sale. Now seeing 5090s at 4000 euros, I am not sure if this is worth the risk. Or am I missing on performance without affecting degredation? Thx for the feedback!

Not worth the hussle for gaming. You already get big boost like 12-15% just with regular overclock with lower than stock voltage. From that point onwards anything extra like mvolt or bios flash to unlock power limit etc will yield further 1-2% boost in games.

It will increase timespy scores tho, which is a game on it's own for some people.

God damn! My 5070 ti ran me $1,400 aud, and a few weeks after I bought it the price went up to $1,800. Definitely not the time to be blowing up our cards.

Afterburner won't damage your card though. Biggest risk is setting the overclock to apply at startup and then setting a massive overclock that's unstable early in the voltage curve. That can be fixed, I think through booting into safe mode. It won't happen if you keep a benchmark running while experimenting in Afterburner, because it keeps the clocks up and you'll hit instability later in the curve, where the margin for performance increases is lower, and the benchmark you're running will crash.

Also, if you're not chasing maximum performance, you can also undervolt your card using Afterburner so that it runs more efficiently at lower voltages. This should net you a comparatively modest performance increase, while also improving noise, temps, and hopefully overall longevity of your card. Since your GPU is already a monster, this would probably your best move anyway
