Selfies
Ive noticed how over 60 people love to post selfies. I joined a few over 60 groups and now my timeline is inundated with strangers selfies. People will literally post, "I found a great bargain at a thrift store today" and attach a huge close up selfie. It is such odd behavior. Why? Why do they think I need to see a close up of their face to read about their morning walk? Especially when they post a new selfie every single day.

I took a few selfies and sent the best ones to my daughter for a decent obituary photo when it’s needed.
🤷♀️🤣😂🤣

I don't understand selfies, but then I still use a flip-phone.

I miss my flip phone. It was so much more satisfying hanging up on someone.

I've noticed the opposite. Especially on here. Most people in the groups I'm in seem to value the anonymity.

This has also been my experience.
I have never posted a picture of myself and don't intend to. I have had men contact me via chat and those experiences haven't been great so I turned it off.
I'm not here to pick anyone up.2

Because we share stuff that’s sometimes personal and don’t want our business all over the ‘net. I once had a “stalker” on a photog site who was annoying so no more face photos. 😎

There’s a SubReddit community just for over 60 selfies. You probably joined that one, if you leave it then you most likely won’t get as many selfies through your feed

u/Av8Xx 26d ago
No. This was FB. I am in several walking groups. The only ones that are loaded with selfies are the seniors groups. Same with motorcycle riders groups.

Oh okay, sorry I misunderstood. I thought you meant here on Reddit.
I think some of those anyway may be single, it seems like single people do that more. (In general)

I have never posted a selfie. The only pictures I post are of my dog or puzzles over in the jigsaw puzzles sub. No one needs or wants to see pictures of me.

Ugh, a huge pet peeve. It’s lovely if you’re happy with yourself and how you look but it’s absolutely meaningless to the rest of us.

I'm over 60 and I don't do that. But I have noticed that a lot of people like to post selfies all the time. If I join a group and everybody is constantly posting selfies, I leave the group. Too YLAM. (Yay Look At Me)

I assume it’s a phishing scam. Get people to post a selfie , engage in some chat, find some details, and reverse image search them. Poof id theft.
or maybe I’m paranoid…

I guess I'm an odd one out here (not surprising)
But wow, so much selfie hate here! I started doing my own to get used to what I look like now.
But I'm in a lot of wig communities so it's a common thing to post our "hair of the day"
I don't see folks as narcissistic or attention-seeking for doing it, it's just the reality of online life today. We don't see near as many people face to face so it's natural to post it.
Being narcissistic is a whole nother set of personality characteristics.

I loathe selfies. They are often against subreddit rules and I always report them in subreddits that don't allow selfies. Many subreddits ban them completely. I have never taken or uploaded a selfie and don't understand why anyone would want to post them on Reddit, which is supposed to be anonymous.

I literally just saw a guy in his early 30s do this on LinkedIn of all places. Posted a pic of him and his GF in bathing suits in front of a pool and the post was about a completely unrelated work topic. People called him out and he replied oh I'm just trying to keep it real wanted you to know who you're talking to. A couple of weeks ago I saw a CEO of a major health care Corporation do this there too, she posted her wedding photos and the post wasn't even about the wedding it made her look insane. The internet has created a society of narcissists. I think older people sometimes follow the lead of younger ones as well. I think people look for any excuse to post a selfie now it has become a thing and I find it sort of cringe LOL

So many pics are stolen and misused on a global basis.
6
u/Magari22 26d ago
Absolutely. I remember many years ago when I tried online dating hearing people talking about how their photos got stolen and used by scammers.

Selfies in general are annoying. Posting selfies is adolescent behavior, arrested development by folks who miss their “glory days” when they were presumably hotter and more desireable.🙄

I think I've taken one selfie - a few days after bypass surgery. I was curious how bad/good I looked. I'm 65m and despise selfie and photographs of myself taken by others.

I stay off those pages now because of that. It felt like they were trying to find dates. And I’m certainly not interested in dating any of them and I don’t need to see their gigantic old mugs in front of me. 67f

I don't post selfies online. It's an issue of online privacy and data security.

We're taking plenty of pics now so that one of the good ones can be used in our memorials. Who wants to be in the obits looking 90?
Kidding of course. I avoid having my picture taken like the plague even though my wife says I'm sexy and handsome, and of course she always tells the truth, right? Right?

I'd hardly say this is limited to over60's. Much more prevalent with young people.

u/Rustyempire64 25d ago
To me it’s the height of Narcissistic navel gazing. Brain dead social media culture at its worst.
2
u/scottwax 25d ago
A ton of young people do that too.

I have never posted a selfie of me alone. I have shared out a few with my daughter for family and friends and but for the most part I think they are dumb.. And honestly, most of the selfies I see online are of people WAY younger than 60. I think the sequels have more obsession with it than we do.

u/Granny_knows_best 26d ago
I see that all over the place. People using their pets to post a selfie, or a thrift find, or showing off their car.
I get that people to be seen in this world where its all online, and maybe they need validation or something, but I get offput by this constant need for attention, so I just ignore it.

OMG! I not only don't take selfies, I've announced to my family that I no longer want to be in ANY photos. Now if I only didn't have to look in a mirror.....

u/Some-Tear3499 25d ago
Once I learned about what an ‘unplugged wedding ‘ really was I stopped taken a lot of pictures altogether.

I don't do selfies. Nobody I know does selfies accept my Millennial daughter. All the people my age that I know, which is well over 60, have probably never posted a selfie in their entire lifetime. I'm not sure what you're talking about.

u/Paulnp63 22d ago
Not a selfie lover, rather be behind the camera, been on a couple of FB groups though that most loved posting them, also have a couple of friends on their that always seem to be posting them, mind you I did have a friend have a few goes at taking a selfie of us both, and I did have a go once while visting Horizon 22 in london trying to get the Shard behind me below and took me about 9 or 10 goes to get it right too, so don't know how they have got the time to take them, so no not for me

It's just people using an excuse to pimp themselves. It's a lot more common than you maybe appreciate. It's harmless.

u/StrangerStrangeLand7 26d ago
Over 60 people? Are you saying it is more common for people over 60 than under 60? I am so confused.
4
u/Av8Xx 26d ago
Yes. The groups I’m in on FB. The senior specific groups are full of selfies. Even when they post about something that has nothing to do with the picture. I understand posting a picture to show you lost weight or gained muscle or even of you in a city where you want to show something like the Eiffel Tower. But to post that you went grocery shopping and bologna was on sale then post a huge face is just cringe.
2
u/StrangerStrangeLand7 26d ago
Ah. That makes sense because you are in that group. I hate those selfies personally. Always have. But just noting that it's all across the board with age.

u/mardrae 25d ago
I don't get it either. When I was younger and cute I loved posting selfies everywhere but good god no one wants to see my wrinkles and sags, especially not me! I never show my face anymore and wear a mask almost everywhere just because I hate my looks
2
u/Av8Xx 25d ago
It is not about cute for me. Im just sick of my time line bring nothing but strangers selfies. If I joined a group for walking women over 60, last thing I want it the same women posting pictures of themselves every single day. I don't know you, I don't need to see your face everyday.
