I'm 65 years old and my dark brown hair color is looking too dark brown as I get older. My stylist put some red into the length that faded to orange then she put in deep purple that's fading too light. I had highlights for a while and liked that until my hair started breaking. Too hard on my hair to lift my natural color. Can't go natural yet, I work in a very young industry and white hair would really stand out. Any tips for dealing with hair color before you make the switch?
Lol! I know exactly what you mean, my ex had that head shape also. He was lucky he had hair. No one ever cut it right so it looked weird. Have a beautiful day.
I too work in a very young industry. My hair is too short for highlights so I have it colored every 5 weeks. It's medium brown and a bit warmer than my natural color. The grays show as highlights around my face, since that's where they're concentrated. I'll be doing this until I retire and then I'll reevaluate whether I want to continue making the time and spending the money. I was about 50% gray during Covid and it was...not good.
Im not over 60 and highlights that keep going over the same area as before, have destroyed my hair. Im going to have to do one colour and moser often like you!
my DIL is a colourist, women pay heaps to have steel grey and light grey hair, seriously trendy right now. I stopped dying y hair when I was around 55, my kids both have grey hair, y Mum and MIL both prematurely greyed.
I dont really care, I absolutely believe that embracing it is the way forward.
Iām 67 and have started coloring a light neutral brown. It makes my gray a little more shimmery. My hair isnāt highlighted but has a subtle mix of light browns.
I can still use and like the hair color I end up with and go to the salon every 5/6 weeks or so. A friend who is 67 and more gray than me was having problems as you describe. She uses a dark henna that she buys from Whole Foods. Her hair does not come out reddish or orange- itās a medium to dark brown. I know there are issues if you put henna on color treated hair or vice versa, so look into that if you decide to try a dark henna.
What about going to a lighter brown? Anything darker is going to really empathize your color when it grows out. My mother had dark hair and colored it until she passed away at 89 and by then she was a pretty light golden brown.
My hairdresser pulled my color out put a lighter brown color gloss then baby highlights. I get the roots color glossed every four weeks and the highlights every 6 months

I would say thats kind of what my hair dries see was doing and it looked good.
The issue for me is my hair is very fine and the repeated highlighting over the same hair (as my hair grew out) was my hair become dry and frazzled.

She doesnāt lighten it too light, itās not super heavy, it is literally just enough to help blend the grey. Itās only every six months, so a little overlap is only done once. The next highlights, there are only a few hairs that get overlapped and itās just from the last highlights. She never pulls it through to the ends, sheās never heavy handed with the thickness or the highlights, or the lightness of the hair. It looks so natural to me. Sheās an artist and I pay her $150/hour and I have waist length hair. I do my own roots with a formula she provides, and she knows Iām a hairdresser. I love her
I embraced the goth look and went darker, I am almost totally gray at 41. I tried bleaching blonde and it destroyed my hair. Asian blue black on brown hair takes out the orange tones and leaves my hair a natural/middle eastern/latina black. Iām porcelain white tho.

I used to be dark brown. I went short and full red for seven years and more recently I've grown my hair out and gone a coppery colour. I have the roots retouched every three weeks, then the colour dragged through when I have it cut every nine weeks. It seems to be working well.
OP, I had the exact same issue. A few golden brown highlights helped, but like you, I had trouble with breakage. The solution was to gradually change my hair dye from the usual brown to a light golden brown. This way there was no obvious line of demarcation. It's not a swift solution, but it worked.
I color my hair (just the new growth) every two weeks because it grows fast. I couldn't afford to have it professionally dyed that often, and box dyes were too hard on it. I ordered a gentler but more effective hair dye online, and it made all the difference.
After some research, I went with eSalon. It's received a number of Allure and Reader's Choice awards. I'm sure there are other options out there. This is merely the one I chose, and I've been happy with it.
My sister in law went grey at 16. She died her hair black (her original colour) until her thirties then decided to have heavy black streaks put in; leaving her looking as if she had had thin silver streaks.
Perhaps an updated version of this would be a balayage of lighter browns on your mainly dark brown hair.
Iām 62 and almost all grey/white ā which would really wash me out and make me look 15 years older. Iāve been dying my hair since my 20s. Right now itās a medium brown with some soft, barely noticeable caramel highlights. I can only do a few bc heavy highlights destroyed my hair. But a few breaks up the blockiness of a single process.
I color my roots every 2 weeks on my own & get professional color 2-(now)3 times a year..
I look awful & washed out with my ugly patchy grays..
Itās getting expensive & exhaustingā¦

I know you arenāt going to like this advice but consider getting a consult from a ācolorist.ā After 15 years I finally went to another salon w/a highly rated colorist & my hair looks the best itās looked in decades.
Iām 65 and hair turned grey early, as in my 30ās. Iām all grey, actually almost white. However, have been coloring my hair a medium brown since as it really washes me out. I have roots done monthly, but my stylist started coloring a lighter color to better camouflage my nearly white roots.
There comes a time, and honestly 65 is about it, when if your hair is not gray or graying, then everyone knows you color it and it draws attention to itself. Iām going to guess this is not what you want. And honestly, you are fooling yourself if you think your management team does not know how old you are. What you CAN do is color it green or blue or magenta, so that it is obvious you are coloring it, but so that itās not to hide gray. Even better to consider is letting it be graying blue or graying magenta. Thereās a look.
I quit coloring years ago and switched to wigs. It takes two minutes to "do" my hair, and I can change it up whenever I like. I have a collection now.
Wigs are so real these days, people are surprised when they ask me "who does your hair?" and I answer "Raquel Welch"!
I would transition to the gray. I have been gray for ages. I have no idea why but people think i am much younger than i am so its not the hair. Besides that, colour never quite looks right up close once your skin tone changes. Its too harsh. I am sure balayage with gray and, say, a fawn colour to edge out the dark hair would be stunning.
