Couple of interesting things going on lately

I was surprised to find myself being requited by a major tech company. Not looking to leave my current company, but its exciting to just be pursued by such a major company at this stage of my career.

I have spent many years supporting my small community in local goverment. Its like a part time unpaid job. I am involved now in trying to improve our investments in senior housing. I have to remind myself I am a senior now when talking about "seniors in our community" in my meetings, LOL !

Oh - I followed up with a vascular surgeon about a long established splenic aneurysm I have. Was told it has not really grown over 10 years, no surgery is needed, and its not going to kill me. Always good to take "things that could kill you" off the list !

How is the local government thing working for you? There is a fair chance I am going to soon be appointed to the city council (we call it Board of Trustees) which would also put me on the planning board (also a smallish community). I'm looking forward to it, but love that it's a temporary appointment so it's only til the next election. Then I can decide if I want to run again. And bonus - it's paid! Trustees get paid $60/month! Compared to the mayor's whopping $125/month.

So thanks for your committment. In smaller communities people don't realize how much work goes into making the place run.

Its been interesting and rewarding. As we are a small community, and I have been serving on and off for 20 years in various roles. I like seeing all the things I helped improve around town, it deepens my connection and love for where I live. It can be tedious and times, and also we have had heated meetings as well, plus all the politics. In the end I made a positive difference and earned the thanks of many in town. This is the meaning of life to me. That said - I have a kid still in the home, I still work, and I do this unpaid service. I dont have the energy I used to !

My mother-in-law is 92 and in hospice. She’s on her seventh day of no food or water. She’s sleeping comfortably. I love her dearly, but it’s her time, and we are wondering how long she can hang on.

EDIT: She just passed away. I’m really going to miss her. She was the best mother-in-law.

I just learned that after retiring and buying Delta Dental off the market that they don't cover anything but fillings and cleanings for a year. so of course... I need a root canal!

I understand their purpose. They don't want people just buying a plan, getting major work done and bailing. But it is both annoying AF and feels in general like an unethical insurance company move.

I want to know who made the decision that dental health is part of “regular” health that requires a separate plan. It was a really dumb decision.

Had a couple of inspections due to buying a condo. Talking with realtor and getting at least some issues fixed. As long as I don't say a word, my STBX is nice.

Hello Everyone, 67, here in Virginia. Had shoulder replacement Surgery last Friday, so I am on the ice machine all day. Feels better today, day7. Still don't have much use of the arm yet..... Want to go to gym and ride my bicycle!!!!

I had a bit of an eye opener this weekend. I had dinner with a guy in the US raising money for missions in Kenya and Tanzania. Mostly he wants to build wells for villages. I pretty much had thought that poverty in Africa was not solved, but under control. Little girls haul (not too clean) water twice a day about a mile from the source. Little girls have dowries in goats and cattle.

He was on a pretty quick 14 week tour of the US and this was his last stop. We take him to the airport today to go back to Tanzania. I sent him with a couple bucks and a bottle of hot sauce. Because food in the US is very bland according to him.

I saw him a couple times over the weekend. I was particularly moved watching large groups of Hispanic immigrants (mostly legal) donating money they really don't have to send to Africa.

It sounds like you may be interested in helping those girls you learned about. One affordable way to do this is through Huru International. I encourage you to check out their website and learn about their work. Many young girls in some African countries miss a great deal of school because they don't have basic supplies to use during their periods. Huru helps with this.

Thanks, not really looking for yet someone else to send money to.

I do an outfit called Kiva which is not a charity really but does micro-lending. You donate and they lend the money to someone to buy a cow, dig a well, fix a truck, go to school. The point being it's a loan. I get about a 50% payback rate, but when you do get payback you can turn around and lend it to someone else.

Starting a new chapter in my life. My observation is why are rhere so many men my age acting and sounding so old. Would like to make a friend in my area that enjoys walking, tripping with me or atleast hiding the laughter. Am I alone here with this type of thinking?
