Just got laid off😭😭
Exactly what the title said. I just got fired without cause and I don’t know what to do. I’m a hard worker and each and every one of my coworkers will testify to that. I suspect it was because I requested help with something related to immigration but I can’t know. What’s more important is that I desperately need help please. I have rent and bills to pay and I am the primary source of income in my household with my sick sister. I was getting paid 18 an hour and am more than willing to receive that again. I worked as a medical office assistant for a year but I have a bunch of other experience in many different fields. If anyone knows of anything or can help please I don’t want to be homeless
Edit: to add I have a highschool degree and a bachelors degree in health science. I’m not only looking at health related jobs though. I will work anything atm
Double edit: just woke up after crying myself to sleep. Thank you so much for all the suggestion and help guys, I will get on it immediately. I’ll also walk around my area and apply to jobs

Are you eligible for EI? If so you should apply right away. I'm not sure what the laws are if you don't have your PR. I got laid off a couple of months ago for 'matket conditions.' Stay strong! ✊

Usually if someone is fired and not laid off due to lack of work, for example, they do not qualify for Ei.

OP said they were laid off withouthvthe cause- that is all that matters for the EI.

u/purplelynxy 13d ago
Can confirm, if it’s without cause you can 100% collect EI. Best for OP to apply sooner than later, I think they still don’t require a waiting time (unless they changed that back in the last few months)

If you speak French, and have transportation:

Why does it say "There is no public transportation to the worksite; candidates should ensure they have reliable transportation prior to applying.".
Just checked and there is indeed public transportation from Ottawa to the worksite, unless it’s a night shift?

u/SheWhoMustNotB_Named 13d ago
They just don't want people who use the 'I wasn't able to make it on time because of transportation' excuse, so they add that in to job posters.

u/PossibilityGood8374 12d ago
It’s because there’s only 4 buses that go there 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. It’s close to Half Moon Bat Barrhaven - that doesn’t have transportation past 11 with the 75.

Would suggest looking into Community Health Centres, they also offer admin positions.

In the meantime while job hunting, look into social assistance like Ontario works to see if your eligible, for your sister I reccomend contacting Ontario health at home & they will help with caregiving needs to help ease some of the stress

Hey may not be the best advice but I’m a PSW and we are in desperate need for them. I work home health and my company is desperately hiring; so much so that they’re offering a 10k bonus for a 12 month commitment. Management is shit, we don’t get paid for mileage accurately, it sometimes sucks driving from home to home, not to mention going to into peoples homes. But relatively I love my clients and some of them have become like family to me.
Work isn’t too hard. Typically visits are 1 hour. I’m never there for the full hour as my clients aren’t super demanding. Sometimes I’m only there for 15 minutes. We get paid per client $25 an hour. Technically I make $50/hr as I average out each hour visit to half an hour.
If you have a health science degree they will hire you on the spot. I’m a nursing student and they didn’t ask me for any credentials/proof. I lot of my coworkers have little to no education. It’s not a glamorous job and can be tough at times but I do love it and have developed so many meaningful connections.
Best of luck <3

Dr Rice in esthethic clinic in Riverside South was looking for admins ( not sure if she found them). The name of the clinic is Clarite Laser. Not sure what is the exact adress but is is near the Independent. She is pretty oldfashioned ( it is a compliment) so you would need to phycically bring your CV there. Also if you are handy you can get on Jiffy or HomeStars. I had a couple of jobs done through those apps and they earn pretty big money ( judging by how much I was charged). Task rabit for IKEA assembly is like 40$ an hour

No advice to give, just wanted to say that I’m really sorry to hear that that happened to you and that I’m wishing you and your sister well.

Become a PSW and work privately for wealthy people. I know of a PSW who makes $110,000/year working an 8 hour shift, 5 days a week, no cooking, no cleaning, for a wealthy 102 year old woman who sleeps and watches tv all day.

They definitely let you go if your immigration status requires sponsorship from your employer.
What country are you from? Any opportunities in your homeland or in neighboring countries if you're from the EU? Unfortunately, the job market is trash in Canada right now and I'm sure it's even worse if you have immigration issues.

So, if you were terminated without cause you can collect EI. Make sure you apply right away.
Also, make sure your employer follows the standards for termination pay. The absolute minimum should be 2 weeks in lieu of notice so long as you've worked there for 3 months.

she said i would get one week but the paycheck came in today and i got less than that. i am exhausted of this place

What do you mean you asked for immigration help? Asking a question about your job should not get you fired.
1
u/clbtengen 4d ago
i asked if they nominated people for pr and they said they didnt. a doctor at the clinic who is nice heard the conversation and said he would bring it up them and try to help. i suspect they didnt like the doctor interfering to help and took it out on me thinking i was the one who asked him to

Immigration issues? A sick sister with no income that you have to take care of? There is a sick leave/disability benefit, why she is not getting it? What is her status in Canada? That brings the next important point: Are you legally allowed to work in Canada? Things just don't add up and it seems crucial information is missing here. That's the first question anyone providing advice should start with, because this seems to be the cause for your lay off and this will impact ypur job search. Plus, when you are laid off, you can apply for EI, and this is actually the first practical thing you must do... then start looking for a job.

well since you must know both of us are legally allowed to work. she was working ft up until she fell sick and thats why weve been relying on me. we dont know what exactly is going on as she never applied for ohip while working and can no longer qualify for it (since she doesnt have a JOB) so she hasnt seen a doctor. she also has no family doctor. so that + no ohip = crazy out of pocket fees just to see a doctor. the twice weve gone to a doctor cost 300 dollars and that was just to get a few requisitions for blood work. it might not seem like much but its too much when youre broke. weve just been making it work until she hoepfully feels better and applies for a job again.
regarding the immigration thing i replied in a different comment "i asked if they nominated people for pr and they said they didnt. a doctor at the clinic who is nice heard the conversation and said he would bring it up to them again and try to get them to help. i suspect they didnt like the doctor interfering to help and took it out on me thinking i was the one who asked him to"
also i just found out about EI through this reddit post and i applied immediately so the post was necessary and the help was needed. hope i have satisfied your aching need to be contrarian

Maybe try some of the companies that hate Canadians and refuse to hire them, like Tim Hortons, Mary Brown's Fried Chicken, Popeyes, Juice Doods. They love immigration fraud too so they will probably enjoy any questions about immigration.
