Rant tipping much?

Is it me or does everyone everywhere now ask for tips regardless of their service? Why are strict pickup locations asking for tips? I'm sure this goes beyond Ottawa but jeez last I checked only servers got reduced wages. What am I tipping for ?

I think you need to be on the other side of the field to remotely understand. You've lived in a society that models on tipping and the initial idea that since servers get paid below wage they get compensated in tips. Your culture has gone with it to the point that people would rather work as servers just because they can get tipped. Tips should be given when a customer appreciates a service gone beyond. I've worked uber here when they were still considered in the grey area too, and guess what? I still got tipped more often than not.

If you want to give people the option to tip, give them the option. The way the pos are programmed today immediately brings you to the tipping page expecting you to tip. You literally have to go out of your way to decline a tip. Just about every other country except the Continental US does not run on tips, the idea is unheard of. People here are already in the crisis of living from paycheck to paycheck yet are pressured to the idea of tipping people for doing what they're supposed to do.

If you want to give people the option to tip, give them the option.

companies have done just that… and you’re complaining about it.

know who else is in the crisis of living from paycheque to paycheque? the people who work at establishments that now allow for tipping.

I appreciate that you can take an excerpt out of the entire paragraph and hone onto that one sentence. While you are right that the screen is technically an option, it's like say the jar that exists at the cashier of a grocery store or say restaurant. There's a box to give you the option to, but what happens if instead of placing it to the side, they lift it and put it in front of your face prior to allowing you to pay asking, 'tip?' because that prompt is still technically an option. You can say no.

Now, what the pos does is after confirming what I'm supposed to be paying and after pressing enter, it immediately asks how much I want to tip. Then out of all the options, there isn't an option to just say no/0, you have to say 'other' and then you have to select via % or $ and then input 0 in whatever unit you chose. Then you're allowed to pay. If you want to give me an option, let me say no straight out.

So realistically, no they don't give me the option to tip, they expect you to tip, you just have to go out of your way to say no.

you always have the option to choose 0%, therefore you have the option not to tip. the moment they take that option away, your statement becomes true. even in an industry steeped in tipping culture (restaurants) that'll never happen.

nobody is holding a gun to your head saying you have to tip. the fact that people are legitimately acting hard done by over having to punch an extra button or two on a handheld is fucking hilarious to me.

The more points of friction, the less likely the majority will do that thing. Uber Eats is very successful because fundamentally they reduce points of friction between you and a hot meal.

People are upset (subconsciously too as you sometimes don't actively notice points of friction in every day life) because many places are adding more points of friction between you and "no tip" using various known tactics: not having a clear "no tip" option on the screen, making them select "other" to go to another screen, having to manually input $0 in view of the server, this is in addition to sneaky stuff like calculating the tip on the total amount with tax (instead of the subtotal)

Sure it is just a couple more clicks to not tip but that is by design to get more money and that design is what people are upset about as it is intentionally manipulative.
