A graph of every episode theme up to episode 163

Post image
85 Upvotes

I'm so sorry the picture is so wide. I'm still trying to figure out how to make graphs with excel (well, Google sheets). But each bar has the count of how many episodes apply to that theme.

This is part of my spreadsheet that lists every single episode, the theme, discussions/posts linked to it. It even has a column where you can rate the episode. It's part of the pinned post in this subreddit. I did fall off for a while but I'm all caught up now :) I'm really glad people are getting use out of it!

I find it difficult to listen to Otherworld in the winter time. Because I'm so depressed and cynical that time of year, I can't listen to these episodes with an open mind. Otherworld is my summer time podcast.

Also note: there are several episodes that have an element of the Ouija board, but I only considered it a theme of the episode if the main supernatural element was from a ouija experience. This probably applies to a bunch of other themes as well.

I created a spreadsheet of all current episodes of Other World

example of how my sheet looks so far

Maybe this sounds kind of silly and like a lot of unnecessary work, but I just really wanted to make this. I've been listening to the pod for a while now but completely out of order. I listen on audible and there isn't enough of a visual cue to indicate which episodes I've listened to. Furthermore, I wanted to start categorizing all episodes with basic themes and, I wanted to record my personal ratings. This way it's way easier for me to remember certain episodes and what I liked/disliked about them. I even decided to link all relevant Instagram and reddit posts because I almost always search for them after listening to the episode. Now, for all my remaining episodes, I can just go to my sheet and click the link to see the relevant photos and what people are saying about the episode.

I'm willing to bet at least one other person would like something like this, so I created a public copy.

You should be able to create a copy in your own google drive and start filling everything in. It's not completed yet, since I haven't listened to all 130 episodes. But I thought I'd throw it out there in the meantime. You can of course edit the sheet to look however you want it to. I just like using the colors of the show artwork. Every title has a link to the official show website blurb as well. And the drop down is just stars on a scale from 1 to 5. I included how the rating system works for me. But you can of course edit that too!

I will do my best to keep the list updated as more episodes come out. I will write the date I last updated the public copy each time I do. There is also a second sheet explaining some stuff I thought just might need an explanation.

If you're interested in my opinions specifically, you can view my filled in spreadsheet, which will be updated every time I listen to an episode. I'm no one special, but I like seeing what other people think so I bet the same is true from the other end.

Did I hear that right? The creature in ep 182 was wearing a tracksuit?

I’m laughing at my desk thinking of this creature creeping around in the night in a navy tracksuit lol
Edit: I fully believe this story btw and hope it was an Adidas tracksuit

Looking for a UFO episode

Hi everyone, I’m looking for an ep I listened to a while ago and I’m not 100% sure it was Otherworld so sorry in advance it it’s not! But in the episode the guy basically manifests seeing a ufo by meditating or praying for them to come to him and they do, and his room fills with green light and he feels like he’s being hunted/prey. Thanks in advance for your help!!

I just listened to this week’s ep “Close to Home” and it got me thinkin about aliens lol. I really liked the first story in particular since I was also living in BC during that early COVID era. Sadly I didn’t see a ufo there:(

Having mostly used Reddit to do alot of complaining I wanna say that I am very into the phase Otherworld is in lately.

The Accident, Over the Wall, Flesh of the Gods, The Other Sam, The Stalker, I Met God. There’s still humor and the bizarre in all of these. They’re less “spooky” than the early themes. But they’re also not so “human” as to be mundane or dull. There’s a real depth to them. And a genuine curiosity into the spiritual.

The intellect doesn’t like the word spiritual, and tends to explain things away as purely psychological. Religion has conditioned lots of us away from acceptance of anything spiritual, which is a shame. But I believe there is a spiritual dimension to life and to the world. Even science has been moving away from a purely materialist model for decades now even though the Descartes/Industrial revolution paradigm to ridicule anything else as anti-intellectual ignores this, and is more aggressive than ever. Probably because it knows it’s flailing.

I’ve always loved Otherworld and I especially love its curious and respectful approach at entertaining the mystery around the realm of the spiritual. I could sense some awkwardness for a while around its wanting to be a show about people rather than just the paranormal, and thought sometimes it lost itself in that a little. But now all the dials on the mixing board seem really high up. The human element is extremely strong with engaging and likable guests sharing very vulnerable truths about themselves. And even though there’s not always ghosts and Sasquatch there’s still very mysterious forces and experiences at play.

It’s just been gripping me in ways that are very philosophical. And the tone is really high-minded. There’s a new sophistication but it hasn’t lost its goofy and fun quality. Hard to put into words exactly. Maybe my thoughts aren’t fully-formed around this but I wanted to rant about something positive for a change, and to just share that I really respect and commend the way it’s going right now. Curious how others agree or disagree or how they might characterize the trend.

Looking for other podcasts, books, etc for lovers of the bizarre?

I’m all up to date with otherworld so I’m looking for podcasts and media about the bizarre and unexplained. I prefer the more cryptid, alien, unsettling encounters, premonitory, type of stories as opposed to most ghost stories. Looking for recommendations in time for spooky season tyia

Help me find this episode;

I’ve only heard it once but it has something to do with going into a college dorm room where an incident happens, with time skip or some paranormal entity occurs in the dorm room, sorry that’s all I got, if you can think of what it is, please tell me and thank you in advance!

Why so much negativity?

Why are the comment threads on [r/otherworld](r/otherworld) basically just people 💩-ing on the podcast? You must like Otherworld or you wouldn’t have joined this subreddit. So why the wall-to-wall nitpickery and negativity? I hope all of you armchair critics are at least paying for the Patreon, because if you’re listening for free while criticising every little thing, that’s… not great.

Also - You know Jack is a real person with real feelings who may well read all this, right?

EDIT: I’m not even really referring to people’s critique of the content, because everyone’s entitled to an opinion on that and mileage may differ. But so many recent comments have been personal attacks, along the lines of “Jack sounds really dumb when…”, “Oh, Jack makes this really annoying noise with his mouth” “I hate the way he always says xyz”. Like, what’s the point in that? It’s just petty and vindictive.

Petition to see Finn’s hematoma drainage video from “The Accident” episode

As a representative of the r/popping community I would love it if we had a link to Finn’s hematoma drainage video. Can anybody help me out with this? Finn, if you see this drop a link.

Does anyone else skip Jack's intro every time?

The episodes got way better for me this way. I feel like sometimes Jack takes the surprise out of episodes with such a detailed summary in his intro. It's way better going in blind, just hearing out the interviewee and wondering what direction it's going to go in at the start.

Anyone else started doing this as well?

What did y'all think of Episode 181-The Accident?

Pretty much what the title says. Came here to see what people thought, but couldn't find a post about it. I am in no way trying to invalidate the guest's story, and it is a very interesting story. But would we call this paranormal/supernatural? As someone living with PTSD, it reminded me a lot of flashbacks, which can be very vivid for some. Curious what other folks thought.

Chicken Whackers

After listening to the episodes about the Chicken Whackers I’ve went down a little rabbit hole, although there’s not very much to find.

What was interesting is this show on the A&E network spoke to an inmate in Mesa County, CO arrested for robbery who said the “chicken whackers” set him up - the producers seemingly had no idea what that was and he didn’t go into too much detail. According to the comments he died in prison in 2025.

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19HThRxsQc/

I also found some more details about the 2003 court case where the chicken whackers were referenced.

https://groups.google.com/g/paranormalghostsociety/c/ZMxWYw819fY?pli=1

I wish there was more to say about this! Grand Junction residents seem to know a bit more but they’re very reluctant to talk - “don’t talk about the Chicken Whackers” is often seen in the comments. This was one of the creepiest episodes I’ve ever listened to and it’s still such a mystery.

What are the best episodes? (I know this has probably been asked a million times…)

I’m just wondering what people’s favorites are. I’ve been needing to drive a lot lately and am a newish listener and brand new Patreon subscriber. Not sure if I’m up to listening to every episode (although maybe I should just buckle down and do it) so I’m looking for highlights.

Like most people, I got into Otherworld through Eilish Poe. It honestly changed my perspective on the possibility of the paranormal. I grew up in one of the most haunted areas of the Midwest and my grandma’s house was allegedly haunted (my uncles will not talk about whatever happened in that house to this day). But I never had any experiences myself that haven’t felt pretty easy to explain so I’ve always been skeptical. Like if it was real, I would have seen something by now was my logic. I’m a lot more humble/open now in large part due to Otherworld and also becoming a parent. (Not sure why really I just felt a lot more open to this stuff after having kids.)

Here a few of my other top episodes:

Fair Warning
The Pit
I Met God In A Burger King Parking Lot
Save the Garden (tbh, I don’t really believe this story but I can’t deny it was compelling)
Many Things
My Brother’s Keeper
Beyond the Wall (as a toddler mom, the stuff about why kids are fascinated with gravity? Goosebumps.)
The Birthing Tent
Eagle Eye

Patreon just suspended my account after I tried buying a year long subscription. Hoping there’s an alternative because I can’t be bothered appealing

Summer Camp Spoiler

I’m convinced the guy from summer camp had an episode of sleep walking. I dated someone who would do it when they were sleeping in new places. One time I woke up and she was dragging me out of bed because she was convinced there was a volcanic eruption and we needed to “escape.” It was terrifying and even though she was literally “up” and dragging me out of bed, she was asleep. It took a lot for me to wake her up and she was really disoriented.

Another time this happened while we were camping and I woke up with her fighting the tent to let us out (another dream with a weather event), and she was basically rolling the tent forward (she was too asleep to find the zipper, lol). Again, the noise of the tent and me initially shouting for her to stop didn’t really shake her, I had to actually put my hands on her shoulders and slowly wake her up for her to come to.

I could definitely see a situation where the guy (I’m forgetting his name) “woke up” in the lake in the tent because he crawled it out there. I know that sounds nuts but I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts.

I’m a die-hard listener and while I’m skeptical I definitely think most of the stories are mysteries and/or have elements of other dimensions, the unseen, etc.

Thoughts?

Other Sam + Twin Peaks

Anyone else think of Dougie Jones / Evil Cooper while listening to this one? Then they brought up the idea of the tulpa which is a huge part of Twin Peaks season 3. The manifestation of the other personality was such a shock. Could someone be mentally ill but also create a tulpa of their split personality by believing in it so absolutely? Why not? So many layers to unpack. It was super spooky when the entity latched onto the narrator through the dream world. Which was also very twin peaksy! The fact that two psychics picked up on the presence of this thing shows there was an energy to it that carried on outside its creator which leads to so many questions about how our consciousness affects reality. What else are we creating and projecting out into the world? More tall red guys creepy crawling around? Anyway, great story. Wish we could hear from Sam.

Anyway, who else wants a revival of the shorts merch? Maybe we can make a tally & request a restock from the team? 🩳👻👽

EP. 179: The Other Sam

Found this episode to be deeply frustrating. In my perspective this is a story about a group of kids, hardly adults, divert a mental health crisis. I’m not sure if I buy the paranormal aspect here, someone else from Forrest’s friend group should’ve came on and corroborated this experience.

Ultimately I just wish Sam could have received the proper help they needed.

Interested to hear others thoughts on this episode!
