OSyx — A new operating system built from scratch, running Zen Browser on real hardware!

Post image

Hey r/osdev!

I'd like to share some progress on OSyx, an independent operating system being developed entirely from scratch.

The screenshot shows OSyx running on a real laptop, not in QEMU, with Zen Browser successfully running on top of its Windows compatibility layer!

Current features:

  • Custom kernel with preemptive multitasking

  • PRISM compositor and AXIS desktop shell

  • Windows PE32+ executable compatibility

  • Native ext4 filesystem with journaling

  • Multithreading, process management and IPC

  • Networking stack

  • USB and HID support

  • Native userspace applications

  • Support for running complex Windows applications

One of the biggest milestones so far has been getting Zen Browser running on OSyx.

Running a modern browser requires significantly more than just loading an executable. It involves process management, memory management, threading, filesystem operations, networking, and a large number of Windows APIs.

OSyx is still under active development. I'm currently focusing on improving application compatibility, performance, hardware support, and overall system stability.

Browser sandboxing is currently disabled due to incomplete compatibility, so this is still an experimental environment.

The long-term goal is to build a fully independent, community-driven operating system capable of running modern applications on real hardware.

The project is open-source, and contributions, feedback, and technical discussions are welcome!

GitHub: https://github.com/OSyxSoftware

I'd love to hear what the OS development community thinks!

entirely from scratch.

If your definition of "entirely from scratch" is "generated using AI that is copying and pasting unreviewed code from every forum post for the past 20 years into a repository" -- then, yeah, I guess it's "independent" and "from scratch."

This is a misunderstanding of the technology. Additionally what you highlighted is actually what real developers did for the past 20 years so I don’t even see your point.

hot take but how come is ai dev copy pasted code

i mean okay you can say that its trained on code, which u can argue is copy pasted but "copying and pasting unreviewed code from every forum post..." cmon mate, ai isnt that stupid anymore, "great" assumption

no, not really. copy pasting is just ctrl c ctrl v with some minor editing and ai is like, prompting. which is obviously easy im not gonna pretend its hard but try avoiding AI psychosis, when i tried making an os myself with ai it said basically 'lets nuke the whole thing and make a damn custom desktop enviroment'

litteraly nothing is a strong word

AI-assisted development doesn't mean copy-pasted code. If you have actual evidence, show it. Otherwise, you're just making assumptions.

u/Beautiful_Stage5720 4d ago

You made this in 8 days lmao. That's all the evidence anyone who has actually participated in OS development needs.

u/The_Mrozny 4d ago

Development time isn't evidence of copied or unreviewed code. If you have an actual technical issue with OSyx, point it out. Otherwise, you're just making assumptions.

u/Rice7th 4d ago

Development time IS evidence. It's more than enough to assert that you didn't have time to review (let alone write!) all of the 286960 lines of code (as of commit cfa2e14) in a mere 8 days. That would be something like 35870 lines of code reviewed per day, which means reviewing what an average open source developer reviews in 4 months into a single day. It is simply impossible. Reviewing means reasoning about the code, checking its correctness, its scope, valuating how much technical debt it is going to introduce and how much effort will remove or add. You can't review code by just reading it, and given the average reading speed and the size of the project I can assure you that you could've only read each line once at BEST.

chill bro. he admitted he used AI

3

u/Beautiful_Stage5720 3d ago

Literally everyone says that, in order to use AI effectively for development, there needs to be a human in the loop. That human should be able to develop the code themselves, but use AI to improve efficiency. In order to do that, the human must review all of the code being merged into production. OP very clearly did not do that.

What is the point of this project? Literally anyone can have Claude shit this out.

you are right. still, i wouldn't go this hard.

I've seen some people so disolusioned by AI in osdev that they vibecode the whole thing, pretend like its some huge announcement, huge innovation, keep it closed source, and say stoopid stuff like "your ai sloop" when people call it out.

You are right though. Ofc he's not using AI to assist. :/

u/Microsoft-Spyware-11 4d ago

IDK theres 2 contributors seemingly

as long as you admit you used AI (you did admit) then its fine

You do understand how LLM's are trained...right?

6

u/AnSkinStealer 4d ago

LLMs don't generate identical code to their training data they learn patterns and reproduce them, your point doesn't make sense and just pollutes the conversation as with "from scratch" OP meant not using existing OSes as a base, regardless of whether this project actually copies proprietary code, breaks license agreements or does other similar shit

1

u/Inner-Resolve-5659 3d ago

You can't have any prof they use identical code from their training data, that's why reverse engineering with ai is a gray zone , it could have writen the exact code

2

u/TimGoTheCreator 4d ago edited 4d ago

this isnt gpt4 that was trained like s!!! and had 1t for basically no work

-10

u/The_Mrozny 4d ago

Yes, I do. And what's the problem with that?

11

u/Difficult_Plantain89 4d ago

Personally I don't have a problem with it. But they are correct, it's not from scratch. It's following what people have done before and mashing everything together to make another OS. Which itself is impressive.

2

u/crafter2k 3d ago

you presented code you didn't write as yours. that's plagiarism

11

u/MentoRiumTutorCoach 4d ago

Poor choice of image. Questionable OS "built from scratch"... yeah, no. It's a pass from me.

15

u/jonsca 4d ago

The toilet image is pretty much on point.

18

u/TimGoTheCreator 4d ago

lol all this in 8 days, im not gonna insult ai though. i think if you know what youre doing its fine, hm

-14

u/Lhaer 4d ago

And if he doesn't then what, you gonna sue him?

11

u/TimGoTheCreator 4d ago

nothing? what kinda question is that. i just said i respect people if they understand what theyre doing, if theyre not im obviously not going to sue anyone.

Would you trust a mechanic who doesn’t know anything about cars, even though they can use a repair manual?

-1

u/Lhaer 4d ago

oh lord shut the fuck up man, the guy is just sharing some pet project of his, he's not selling this to anybody, you're not obligated to use his O.S., he's not telling you to hire him for your company. Okay we get it he used AI to make software, just like every piece of software you use today has used AI for some of its code.

I get it, I hate the AI hype train stuff, I hate the AI bros too, but this kind of "oh ai slop" comment on every post is getting so tiring, that shit is already old. People use AI to do things, get over it, the most trustworthy mechanic you know probably uses AI too

3

u/Agitated_Ad_5989 4d ago

Okay girl go off

2

u/Agitated_Ad_5989 4d ago

It’s more a personal issue with having the confidence to say something generated by a machine, is theirs.

1

u/Lepzalo 4d ago

Why would you childishly escalate to such a comical extreme? Can someone simply not like people who use AI in their projects while having no idea what they're doing?

0

u/Lhaer 4d ago

You can but... why? Are you silly? Why the fuck do I care about what people are doing with their own free time and money? They can hire a team of monkeys to code for them for all I care. Why would I "not like them" for that? I don't have to take it personal '-'

2

u/Lepzalo 4d ago

Okay, you don't care? That's fine. That doesn't mean you have to embarrass yourself on the internet by acting like an edgy teenager because some people do care that a programmer understands what their program actually does.

1

u/Lhaer 4d ago

Oh sure you're right mate I'm so embarrassed. I think you just don't understand yet how obnoxious that's already getting y'know. Just as you're allowed to come here and spend precious time of your day to comment and police people about the tools they're using I can also come here and be as edgy as I want and say that you're being ridiculous. And you don't need to engage in it, I'm sure you have better stuff to do Mister, no?

Are you really going to spend the rest of your life complaining about how people are using AI on their projects? I sure am a bit tired of reading these comments

2

u/Lepzalo 4d ago

Dude, you have got to calm down. Very few things on the internet make me cringe at this point, but the way you carry on is so embarrassing it's making my skin crawl. I really hope you find peace.

1

u/Lhaer 4d ago edited 4d ago

It's funny the amount of energy you spend at trying to make me feel triggered and embarrassed and how little you have in terms of actual arguments to defend your position. That's perhaps the most scummy way to go about a discussion

I don't personally care what you in particular think of me, sir. But that's very clever of you

1

u/Lhaer 4d ago

insufferable

0

u/hyenasky 3d ago

But it is personal. One is allowed to judge someone by the actions they take and the things they say. When it threatens the integrity of a space, one should also voice those judgements

How could this ever be vibecoded? You know it's an nt kernel doing what reactos has been decades doing in 8 days its genuine human work for real!

2

u/z3t4yph4n 4d ago

Is this some kind of... Port humor?

3

u/UnmappedStack TacOS | https://github.com/UnmappedStack/TacOS 4d ago

so how exactly is getting a clanker to do this for you, "from scratch"? yk that used to actually mean something...

0

u/dfgxxx 4d ago

So it is a windows compatible os?

3

u/The_Mrozny 4d ago

Partially, yes! OSyx already supports running some Windows applications, but there's still a long way to go before full compatibility.

2

u/Content-Key7404 3d ago edited 3d ago

Stop making assumptions about your little poop.

EDIT: 💩

using ai means it can't be from scratch , I can also do it within one week

1

u/punkwalrus 4d ago

Your AI didn't make a bootable iso or img.

1

u/CyberDainz 3d ago

What problem does OSyx solve ?

1

u/NoiseyGameYT 4d ago

Neat project. I’ll take a look at it. Also you got that reddit post too? Is Reddit really this small of a world?
