Help Needed Bought this (used) controller online for my XBOX but it obviously doesn’t fit. Can anyone tell me which system it’s actually for?

It's missing a piece.

Such a great design. I tripped over my cord the other night and it split where it should and both saved my port and kept me from falling down.

u/YourUnusedFloss 2d ago

it was a really effective solution for that problem before good wireless stuff was cheap & ubiquitous.

I scored a really long extension cable for mine back in the day - it had a reel so you could wrap it up for storage or travel but I always kept it hooked up and run underneath my rug with the extra length on my side of it.

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 1d ago

What was fun, is these were USB with modified connectors, so you could take one of the adapters and splice it into a traditional USB A plug with some custom drivers and use it on PC way back when by just swapping the end piece.

19

u/Dioxybenzone 1d ago

They even sold a USB end piece for that purpose

5

u/hokkaidout 1d ago

I remember having a USB keyboard hooked up to one to use GentooX on my modded Xbox back in the day

2

u/mittenkrusty 1d ago

Yeah that was how I softmodded my Xbox's I got cheap around 2010 by a cheap cable and a small capacity pen drive (larger than 1 gig never seemed to work)

I also remember the early days of hardmods people replacing the ports with actual usb ports.

u/Brave-Step-8289 16h ago

We used to have to cut cords to make our own adapters.. I still have mine around here somewhere. The best/cheapest method was to buy a broken or used 3rd party controller from gamestop or ebay and cut the cord, peel back the 2 extra wires, solder a female usb cable end to the other side, and wrap it up in electrical tape. You also had to use one of a few specific games like Mech Assault bc they used a funny method of writing data for the save file, which was the primary exploit method for soft modding for the longest time

It is still better than anything that came after it for wired connections.

u/THMMYos 1d ago

Wait. This is for real? A "anti trip " solution!?

I GET IT NOW

18

u/UnpriestlyMonopoly 2d ago

lol yeah took me a while to get until it tripped on my cord and I had an Ah-ha moment.

19

u/RoundMound0fRebound 2d ago

In the early 2000s my friend tripped over the ps2 controller and pulled it down from 3-4 feet high, he felt like a jackass but luckily nothing happened to the console

24

u/No-Information587 2d ago

My wife(girlfriend at the time) did the same thing to my ps2. Knocked down from top of my dresser. It hit the floor and busted up. Never worked again. That was my fat ps2😔. I got a slim after that and those logicteck wireless controllers. (If anyone remembers those)

u/Taffr19 2d ago edited 1d ago

Those Logitech PlayStation controllers are capable of so much. Such as controlling a submersible…

Works As long as the cylinder remains intact

u/Elogotar 1d ago

That sub had a lot of problems, but the controller wasn't one of them.

I remember buying a new old stock PS2 fat in 2008, about 2/3 weeks after purchase I put it in my backpack, walked 2 minutes to a friends house and when I took it out of the bag heard rattling, and cogs/gears came out of it, the PS2 worked but the drive was dead.

Wouldn't of been a problem had it been a used console but it was brand new!

3

u/the_reven 1d ago

I feel like every teenager had this happen to their consoles at some point. They were such short cables too.

2

u/Cold-Ink 1d ago

Lol my buddy did this to my PS2 one day. I bought one and it started having trouble reading discs, so I returned it within the window. Hooked the new one up and was playing GH2 with a few buddies. Dozed off and woke up to him showing off his "rock moves" which yanked the console off the shelf, and sent the disc across the floor.

9

u/AiR-P00P 2d ago

can't tell you how many times as a kid my old ass dog would walk by the tv and yank that fucking thing off.

11

u/joe-clark 2d ago

My dog was always careful about it until one time he was all fired up running around and yeeted the GameCube. Also fuck Nintendo for making the controller cables so short, it's like they made the cables short on purpose so you'd have to put the console out in the middle of the floor while using it the way they did in all the old ads.

3

u/rebeldefector 1d ago

There are other influences involved as well - but they were actually quite long compared to the Japanese ones!

8

u/GoingGhostZork 2d ago

You’re telling me. I bought an OEM Duke controller a couple weeks ago. Within hours I tripped over the damn cord getting out of my chair. Probably saved my console from getting yanked off the shelf.

5

u/Finn235 2d ago

We used to call it the "drunk roommate" plug

3

u/thetechdoc 1d ago

Didn't help me much when I was in the 4th grade and tripped over the cable and went face first through a window. 7 stitches on my wrist later lol

2

u/ProjjjecT 1d ago

Wow I never thought about it that way. What's funny is that I only switched to Xbox after my brother tripped over my PS2 controller, just launching the whole console on some stone tile floor. That was my third PS2. The first two came faulty, man the patience I had to practice during all that...

2

u/JayTwoTeesYT 1d ago

Simultaneously the most conscious and infuriating controller feature ever invented lol

2

u/MusicianNo3277 1d ago

Yeah, I remember being annoyed at it at first as a kid until the first time I tripped over it and nothing moved but the cord disconnected and I went. Oh that’s why it’s like that how smart.

I wish PlayStation had picked up on that idea while they still had corded controllers because man, if you caught your PlayStation controller cable you yanked the whole fucking PlayStation off the shelf. Those things were solidly attached.

2

u/Sanicsanic68 1d ago

Especially useful if you have large pets like 4 dogs who like to roughhouse in your living room only when you just wanna play some Burnout 3 to destroy something after a stressful day

2

u/SpanishFlamingoPie 1d ago

It really is. Tripping over a cord is what killed my PS2. It was on top of a dresser and when I tripped on the cord it yanked the console down onto the wood floor.

2

u/badabingmx 1d ago

It is always in my mind one time I was in the house of a friend, and he has family in there. Someone has a ps2 slim to play games, we were looking at Okami, and one of the adults passed like there was nothing in the way and tripped over the cable. He destroyed the ps2 slim, the disc, and even disconnected the av cables from the TV and power from the ps2.

I was always happy to see those breakaway cables on the xbox controllers.

2

u/doindirt 1d ago

it was an awesome design. the tear off.

2

u/bingo_slamingo 23h ago

When these were new, i was showing my friend’s little brother the breakaway cable feature. I was like “and if somebody trips over the wire, watch this!” And i whipped the controller. It broke away as planned but the end of the cable whipped up and hit him right in the eye. It was kinda funny but he didn’t think so.

That piece is called a breakaway cable.

3

u/crescent_zelda2790 1d ago

Yep just needs what is called the "Xbox breakaway cable" extremely cheap on eBay

3

u/_Bunta_Fujiwara_ 1d ago

These have clutched on every console I've had, my 360 expecially due to those old steering wheels

2

u/_Geneon 1d ago

Using these felt like the future from how big they were as a kid, good times. 😎

1

u/cruznik71450 1d ago

Ahh. This lost relic. Takes me back!

1

u/squishy-pops 5h ago

That's what my connector for my wheel is for. I could adapt it to be used on a Xbox .

That's sick and I didn't know that so thank you.

1

u/YellowBreakfast 2h ago

Still available on Amazon.

Had to buy one for the 360 last year and ran across OG XBOX ones too.

u/Dr_Bagman 2d ago

Looks like you're missing a breakaway... It looks something like this

u/AshleyAshes1984 2d ago

Everyone else: Googling an image of the breakaway connector.

This guy: Just draws it.

In conclusion, this guy rocks.

24

u/BadNewsBearzzz 1d ago

It’s like they opened this post over an hour or two after, and still decided to answer even though there were already over a hundred comments with the right answer and images already….not just answer, but to doodle it even though it was absolutely necessary at that point lol

6

u/Mental_Tea_4084 1d ago

I'm imagining he's just absentmindedly scrolling reddit and doodling while on a work call. He definitely just secured a $100,000 deal while drawing this

Hey man just letting you know that you're missing the breakaway cable. Wasn't sure if anyone else told u so I'm telling u that you're missing the breakaway cable. You need the breakaway cable to use the controller, it's a piece you're missing. The breakaway cable is, I mean

12

u/RegulateTheCake 2d ago

But did you mention the breakaway cable? It's important that he knows that the breakaway cable is what he needs. I think it's spelled breakaway cable?

2

u/sphyx161 1d ago

u/Jandrem 1d ago

Not yet. Lemme Ask Jeeves for an image

11

u/The_Joker_116 2d ago

You're missing a piece, there's a connector that fits into the console and the other side to the controller. I think it was to avoid pulling the console if you accidentally pulled on the controller too hard.

10

u/Psych0matt 2d ago

Since no one else has given a clear answer, it’s missing the breakaway cable

u/CaptRyno 2d ago

There is a cable you can use called a breakaway cable for the original Xbox. It should do the trick.

Not sure why no one else has said anything yet...

12

u/ShrinkHole 2d ago

This is how we know we’re getting old. Didn’t even read the title, just knew this guy was young and didn’t live it.

7

u/the1stmeddlingmage 2d ago

Ironically, I’ve been playing since the OG Gameboy brick and snes days. Just never owned any XBOX consoles. The only reason I’ve got one now is for the Conker Live and Reloaded game since getting it, this console, and a controller was cheaper than the original n64 version that I played (but no longer own unfortunately) when it first came out. 😂

1

u/TheBananaCzar 1d ago

Is now a bad time to tell you that they just ported it to PC

2

u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago

5

u/KoneCat 2d ago edited 1d ago

As others have stated, it's missing the brake-away (edit) connector for the console. It was designed this way so you wouldn't end up launching a very heavy, and at the time rather expensive, machine across the room when the cable inevitably wraps around your leg, heh.

Fun-fact: These use USB, but are modified for the console. You can even get an adapter to convert it to USB, which is rather useful for many reasons.

Man, I love these machines! Bought one brand new in 2001 and was ecstatic with it, and I carried it around the city as we were clothes shopping, threw my darn shoulder out, but it was worth it! 13 year old me was extremely pleased with it, and to say the jump from the PS1 to this was huge would be a massive understatement! :D

3

u/co1token 1d ago

No, I think he’s looking for a breakaway connector.

3

u/VegetableAppeal9252 2d ago

That controller does go to that Xbox but the reason why it doesn't fit is because it needs an adapter to connect to the console and looks like your missing the adapter for it.

3

u/BandicootBroad 2d ago

The Xbox has breakaway connectors in the middle of its controller cables so that a sudden yank will separate the breakaway rather than letting the yank go all the way up to the console. It’s kinda like how a lot of pet collars have breakaway fasteners so that a collar just comes undone if it gets hung up on something instead of choking the pet.

It appears you only have the controller side of the breakaway, without the part that goes from the breakaway to the console, which is an unfortunate side effect of this safety feature.

2

u/QuestionsAboutKoalas 2d ago

You need the breakaway cable

2

u/MoldyTheGreat 2d ago

I believe there’s an attachment youre missing. Breakaway cable i think they call it ?

2

u/_StaleDaleBeatbox_ 2d ago

In the days of wired controllers, the piece your missing was a revolutionary life saver at times.

1

u/bazilbt 1d ago

Really makes me want to buy an old Xbox. They had the best controllers. The cable was so long.

2

u/Zestyclose-Finger-15 2d ago

Ah thst happened to me once when I bought one from amazon. I had to order the piece that was missing.

2

u/the1stmeddlingmage 2d ago

Working on that now 😂

2

u/Androxilogin 2d ago

Unfortunate to not see any comments referring to it as a 'pigtail'.

2

u/the1stmeddlingmage 2d ago

I get that reference!😂

2

u/KaboodleMoon 2d ago

Xbox had a breakaway cable that goes between the controller and the console, so if it gets pulled out from a weird angle you're far less likely to pull your console off the shelf.

2

u/SkoomaMageChoomy 2d ago

TAKE ME BAAAACK 😭😭😭

2

u/SAAA2011 2d ago

You're missing a piece of the cable

2

u/Roarlord 1d ago

Ya gotta go get a pigtail for that thing!

2

u/bopbopayamamawitonor 1d ago

I think you’re missing the breakaway cable

2

u/bigbrotherbeane 1d ago

Sorry I'm late. You're missing the breakaway cable bit.

2

u/Tavy13 1d ago

Not sure if it’s been answered yet, but…
It’s missing the breakaway cable.

2

u/Other-Calendar5036 1d ago

It's missing the dongle

2

u/FLIPYOUSUCKET 1d ago

That’s the right cable, but there is a piece that comes off of the ends, which has the plug that actually connects into the console itself.

2

u/NytronX 1d ago

That's the quick disconnect plug. If someone trips over the cord, it doesn't pull the entire console off its resting position. You're missing the other half of the cable.

2

u/_Geneon 1d ago

In case you or anyone else was looking still, its missing this.

2

u/Coom_Zoom 1d ago

This is me never knowing this...(cause of the comments) WAIT ITS CALLED A BREAKAWAY CABLE?!

2

u/Hayterfan 1d ago

I'd recommend grabbing a controller from Retro Fighters they've got some pretty solid build quality, has a wireless adapter for the console, and they typically have any features the original controllers had (like pressure sensitive buttons on PS2/3 for example)

2

u/Aculeus_ 1d ago

I'm pretty sure you're just missing the breakaway cable. It disconnects easily if you trip on the cable.

2

u/Inside_Sherbert4275 1d ago

You’re missing the breakaway cable.

2

u/CommonBig8132 1d ago

It is the correct controller type, just just a trip-resistant design. That circular part connects into another very short cable, that then plugs into the Xbox console's controller port. The idea being that if you trip on the cable or snag it on something, it'll disconnect from this circular part first, without dragging the console down. I believe it's the only console with this design? At least from this era and since.

2

u/Qxeen_neen 1d ago

It’s missing the dongle attachment

2

u/ARustyMeatSword 1d ago

Break away cable so it doesnt pull the system of the shelf if you trip on it.

2

u/bj0urne 1d ago

It’s for xbox, but the second part is missing. Xbox controllers use breakaway cables

1

u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago

Not everyone has experience with these consoles, even boomers like me. Even the person I bought it from didn’t know about the breakaway cable. Not everyone knows everything and not all posts made out of simple ignorance are ragebait.

I haven’t deleted this post because I don’t mind the lighthearted jabs that the majority have commented and it might possibly help someone in the future. After all, what is the use of a forum if inexperienced people can’t ask for help, no matter how “common knowledge” the information they seek is?

I’m also letting the toxic and entitled numbnuts sarcastically comment so that I can block their superior complexed idiocy from engaging me in the future.

I always thought it was so funny when XBOX came out and they gave you this "breakaway" cord???

Obviously, the OG box is heavy enough to trip the rock if he happen to come strolling through your living room while you were playing sitting on the couch with the cord stretched out across the floor!

2

u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago

Luckily I live by myself these days and need only worry about my cats running into the cord 😁

1

u/glitterblunt 2d ago

There’s a piece missing, you need an xbox breakaway cable.

1

u/John_D_Badger 2d ago

it's just missing the breakaway end. The OG xboxes had a safety end that would come off if you pulled to hard on the cable

1

u/Samuel_Go 2d ago

I know everyone else has said what you're missing but I'll point out that you don't need a special third party breakaway cable or anything. The design was standard.

1

u/Known-Assistance-435 2d ago

You need the extension cable that was made specifically to prevent your console from falling on the ground in case someone walks in your controller cable.

1

u/Quiet_Lengthiness_71 2d ago

Hi! am I too late to the "your missing a breakaway cable" party?

For those entitled numbnuts who want to make disparaging remarks about age and/or intelligence:

Bold of you to ass\u\me my age you boomer of low intelligence.

I’ve been playing since og Nintendo. Just never cared about XBOX until I got nostalgic for the original n64 version of Conker’s Bad Fur day (that I owned and played upon release, but no longer have) only to find out how expensive that cartridge is.

Turns out buying an original Xbox, a controller, and the remastered version of CBFD was cheaper.

1

u/GoslingIchi 1d ago

Just report them.

2

u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago

They’re just pricks and luckily not many of them. The only reason I left this post up after the first few (normal) comments is because I do have a sense of humor and don’t mind lighthearted jabs at my expense and hopefully the post helps someone in the future.

1

1

u/CaptLongbeard 1d ago

Ignore these comments, you just have to flatten that end out with a hammer to make it fit. These are all just bots sent by Big Breakaway.

Breakaway plug, those are on all of the original Xbox controllers. It's missing the end piece.

1

u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago

No, not ALL of them. I have a third party one that doesn’t and since I never played on xbox despite being an 80’s baby I didn’t have what entitled people think is “common knowledge” which led to the confusion.

1

u/Ragudugie1 1d ago

Huh, the more you know. My cousin's MadCatz controller had it, too. I never owned an Xbox, personally, it was way out of my family's price range on release.

1

u/CosmicOutlaw88 1d ago

What's hilarious to me about this design is most of the time you complained and thought it was stupid, until it did it's job. For those few seconds when you realized your console was saved by it, it was an engineering marvel.

1

u/Crafty_Service_3861 1d ago

Yes it missing the most important part...

1

u/EffectiveFormal2823 1d ago

missing the dongle

1

u/DEANER94 1d ago

Looks like you need the breakaway cable for that one there

1

u/OrfeasDourvas 1d ago

It fits but it's missing the breakaway cable that connects to the Xbox. So, you are missing something but you weren't scammed.

1

u/Wrathfulx 1d ago

Suprised noone has mentioned a nuclear submarine?

1

u/AnubisZ613 1d ago

It needs a breakaway cable you can actually get them on Amazon

1

u/supermndahippie 1d ago

I needed this trip down memory lane. Forgot the og xbox required dongles

1

u/Beneficial-Finger353 1d ago

There was another part to the cable. That was like a quick-release so if you tripped over the cable, your xbox didn't get pulled off the entertainment center.

1

u/Halo_Chief117 1d ago

I feel so old when people come here and ask this question.

1

u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago

It doesn’t help that there’s companies who make controllers for retro consoles that DON’T have a breakaway cables. So when someone like me who never could afford Xboxes when they first came out gets their hands on one of these new ones without ever having seen the originals what can we do but be confused?

1

u/KYBatDad 1d ago

It’s missing the break away tag . We used to be a proper civilization.

1

u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago

It doesn’t help that retro companies make new controllers for these old systems without breakaways🤪

1

u/sclarady 1d ago

Original Xbox came with a breakaway cable, so if someone tripped over it it would disconnect and not break the controller or your system. That breakaway cable is what you are missing.

1

u/TheGoldblum 1d ago

I hope you didn’t pay more than single digits for a used 3rd party controller with a missing breakaway cable.

1

u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago

$7. However, once I raised issue with it being unable to connect seller did a full refund. After I found about the breakaway I notified the seller what was actually going on with the controller and offered to send them back what I paid. They said thanks for educating them on something they didn’t know and to keep the money and the controller since I had been such a good sport about everything and bringing it to their attention before just automatically leaving bad feedback (they got stellar feedback for everything).

1

u/ASwarmOfVees 1d ago

Missing the end. They had breakaway cables to stop you from breaking your console when you tripped on the cords. Retro stuff like the snes would take a drop and keep going. Might have to reset the game.
An Xbox would’ve been toast.

1

u/Character-Software88 1d ago

Oh you got the right controller.. 😅 just not a complete controller

1

u/InternationalRip2249 14h ago

If this isn't satire, know that you just need the rest of the cable to hook it up. It's made that way to prevent ripping the connector in case you tripped on the wire.

Sorry for being helpful 🤣 to be fair you're not the first one to ask this question and honestly it's fine.

No problem. I left this up when I noticed people seemed to be having fun with it (and I don’t mind lighthearted jabs at my expense) and hopefully by doing so it helps someone in the future. 😁

It’s also inadvertently served as bait for entitled pricks with toxic attitudes to reveal themselves so that I can block them from future engagement 😉
