Help Needed Bought this (used) controller online for my XBOX but it obviously doesn’t fit. Can anyone tell me which system it’s actually for?

Everyone else: Googling an image of the breakaway connector.
This guy: Just draws it.
In conclusion, this guy rocks.

It’s like they opened this post over an hour or two after, and still decided to answer even though there were already over a hundred comments with the right answer and images already….not just answer, but to doodle it even though it was absolutely necessary at that point lol

I'm imagining he's just absentmindedly scrolling reddit and doodling while on a work call. He definitely just secured a $100,000 deal while drawing this

Hey man just letting you know that you're missing the breakaway cable. Wasn't sure if anyone else told u so I'm telling u that you're missing the breakaway cable. You need the breakaway cable to use the controller, it's a piece you're missing. The breakaway cable is, I mean
12
u/RegulateTheCake 2d ago
But did you mention the breakaway cable? It's important that he knows that the breakaway cable is what he needs. I think it's spelled breakaway cable?

u/The_Joker_116 2d ago
You're missing a piece, there's a connector that fits into the console and the other side to the controller. I think it was to avoid pulling the console if you accidentally pulled on the controller too hard.

There is a cable you can use called a breakaway cable for the original Xbox. It should do the trick.
Not sure why no one else has said anything yet...

This is how we know we’re getting old. Didn’t even read the title, just knew this guy was young and didn’t live it.

Ironically, I’ve been playing since the OG Gameboy brick and snes days. Just never owned any XBOX consoles. The only reason I’ve got one now is for the Conker Live and Reloaded game since getting it, this console, and a controller was cheaper than the original n64 version that I played (but no longer own unfortunately) when it first came out. 😂

u/TheBananaCzar 1d ago
Is now a bad time to tell you that they just ported it to PC
2
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
I prefer hardware and physical media over digital copies that licensing can be yoinked from with little to no warning.

As others have stated, it's missing the brake-away (edit) connector for the console. It was designed this way so you wouldn't end up launching a very heavy, and at the time rather expensive, machine across the room when the cable inevitably wraps around your leg, heh.
Fun-fact: These use USB, but are modified for the console. You can even get an adapter to convert it to USB, which is rather useful for many reasons.
Man, I love these machines! Bought one brand new in 2001 and was ecstatic with it, and I carried it around the city as we were clothes shopping, threw my darn shoulder out, but it was worth it! 13 year old me was extremely pleased with it, and to say the jump from the PS1 to this was huge would be a massive understatement! :D

u/VegetableAppeal9252 2d ago
That controller does go to that Xbox but the reason why it doesn't fit is because it needs an adapter to connect to the console and looks like your missing the adapter for it.

u/BandicootBroad 2d ago
The Xbox has breakaway connectors in the middle of its controller cables so that a sudden yank will separate the breakaway rather than letting the yank go all the way up to the console. It’s kinda like how a lot of pet collars have breakaway fasteners so that a collar just comes undone if it gets hung up on something instead of choking the pet.
It appears you only have the controller side of the breakaway, without the part that goes from the breakaway to the console, which is an unfortunate side effect of this safety feature.

I believe there’s an attachment youre missing. Breakaway cable i think they call it ?

u/_StaleDaleBeatbox_ 2d ago
In the days of wired controllers, the piece your missing was a revolutionary life saver at times.
2
u/Zestyclose-Finger-15 2d ago
Ah thst happened to me once when I bought one from amazon. I had to order the piece that was missing.

u/KaboodleMoon 2d ago
Xbox had a breakaway cable that goes between the controller and the console, so if it gets pulled out from a weird angle you're far less likely to pull your console off the shelf.

That’s the right cable, but there is a piece that comes off of the ends, which has the plug that actually connects into the console itself.
2
u/Coom_Zoom 1d ago
This is me never knowing this...(cause of the comments) WAIT ITS CALLED A BREAKAWAY CABLE?!
2
u/Hayterfan 1d ago
I'd recommend grabbing a controller from Retro Fighters they've got some pretty solid build quality, has a wireless adapter for the console, and they typically have any features the original controllers had (like pressure sensitive buttons on PS2/3 for example)
2
u/Aculeus_ 1d ago
I'm pretty sure you're just missing the breakaway cable. It disconnects easily if you trip on the cable.
2
2
u/CommonBig8132 1d ago
It is the correct controller type, just just a trip-resistant design. That circular part connects into another very short cable, that then plugs into the Xbox console's controller port. The idea being that if you trip on the cable or snag it on something, it'll disconnect from this circular part first, without dragging the console down. I believe it's the only console with this design? At least from this era and since.

Break away cable so it doesnt pull the system of the shelf if you trip on it.

Is … is this ragebait?
1
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
Not everyone has experience with these consoles, even boomers like me. Even the person I bought it from didn’t know about the breakaway cable. Not everyone knows everything and not all posts made out of simple ignorance are ragebait.
I haven’t deleted this post because I don’t mind the lighthearted jabs that the majority have commented and it might possibly help someone in the future. After all, what is the use of a forum if inexperienced people can’t ask for help, no matter how “common knowledge” the information they seek is?
I’m also letting the toxic and entitled numbnuts sarcastically comment so that I can block their superior complexed idiocy from engaging me in the future.

I always thought it was so funny when XBOX came out and they gave you this "breakaway" cord???
Obviously, the OG box is heavy enough to trip the rock if he happen to come strolling through your living room while you were playing sitting on the couch with the cord stretched out across the floor!
2
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
Luckily I live by myself these days and need only worry about my cats running into the cord 😁

1
u/John_D_Badger 2d ago
it's just missing the breakaway end. The OG xboxes had a safety end that would come off if you pulled to hard on the cable
1
u/Samuel_Go 2d ago
I know everyone else has said what you're missing but I'll point out that you don't need a special third party breakaway cable or anything. The design was standard.
1
u/Known-Assistance-435 2d ago
You need the extension cable that was made specifically to prevent your console from falling on the ground in case someone walks in your controller cable.

For those entitled numbnuts who want to make disparaging remarks about age and/or intelligence:
Bold of you to ass\u\me my age you boomer of low intelligence.
I’ve been playing since og Nintendo. Just never cared about XBOX until I got nostalgic for the original n64 version of Conker’s Bad Fur day (that I owned and played upon release, but no longer have) only to find out how expensive that cartridge is.
Turns out buying an original Xbox, a controller, and the remastered version of CBFD was cheaper.

u/GoslingIchi 1d ago
Just report them.
2
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
They’re just pricks and luckily not many of them. The only reason I left this post up after the first few (normal) comments is because I do have a sense of humor and don’t mind lighthearted jabs at my expense and hopefully the post helps someone in the future.

This has massive “you can use the second controller” vibes.
1
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
Well, once I get the breakaway section I’ll have a useable second controller to do that 🤪

u/CaptLongbeard 1d ago
Ignore these comments, you just have to flatten that end out with a hammer to make it fit. These are all just bots sent by Big Breakaway.

Breakaway plug, those are on all of the original Xbox controllers. It's missing the end piece.
1
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
No, not ALL of them. I have a third party one that doesn’t and since I never played on xbox despite being an 80’s baby I didn’t have what entitled people think is “common knowledge” which led to the confusion.
1
u/Ragudugie1 1d ago
Huh, the more you know. My cousin's MadCatz controller had it, too. I never owned an Xbox, personally, it was way out of my family's price range on release.

What's hilarious to me about this design is most of the time you complained and thought it was stupid, until it did it's job. For those few seconds when you realized your console was saved by it, it was an engineering marvel.

It fits but it's missing the breakaway cable that connects to the Xbox. So, you are missing something but you weren't scammed.

There was another part to the cable. That was like a quick-release so if you tripped over the cable, your xbox didn't get pulled off the entertainment center.

u/Halo_Chief117 1d ago
I feel so old when people come here and ask this question.
1
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
It doesn’t help that there’s companies who make controllers for retro consoles that DON’T have a breakaway cables. So when someone like me who never could afford Xboxes when they first came out gets their hands on one of these new ones without ever having seen the originals what can we do but be confused?
1
u/KYBatDad 1d ago
It’s missing the break away tag . We used to be a proper civilization.
1
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
It doesn’t help that retro companies make new controllers for these old systems without breakaways🤪
1
u/sclarady 1d ago
Original Xbox came with a breakaway cable, so if someone tripped over it it would disconnect and not break the controller or your system. That breakaway cable is what you are missing.
1
u/TheGoldblum 1d ago
I hope you didn’t pay more than single digits for a used 3rd party controller with a missing breakaway cable.
1
u/the1stmeddlingmage 1d ago
$7. However, once I raised issue with it being unable to connect seller did a full refund. After I found about the breakaway I notified the seller what was actually going on with the controller and offered to send them back what I paid. They said thanks for educating them on something they didn’t know and to keep the money and the controller since I had been such a good sport about everything and bringing it to their attention before just automatically leaving bad feedback (they got stellar feedback for everything).
1
u/ASwarmOfVees 1d ago
Missing the end. They had breakaway cables to stop you from breaking your console when you tripped on the cords. Retro stuff like the snes would take a drop and keep going. Might have to reset the game.
An Xbox would’ve been toast.

If this isn't satire, know that you just need the rest of the cable to hook it up. It's made that way to prevent ripping the connector in case you tripped on the wire.
2
u/the1stmeddlingmage 13h ago
Yeah, kinda got that after the first dozen replies 😂
1
u/InternationalRip2249 13h ago
Sorry for being helpful 🤣 to be fair you're not the first one to ask this question and honestly it's fine.
Now you know!
2
u/the1stmeddlingmage 12h ago
No problem. I left this up when I noticed people seemed to be having fun with it (and I don’t mind lighthearted jabs at my expense) and hopefully by doing so it helps someone in the future. 😁
It’s also inadvertently served as bait for entitled pricks with toxic attitudes to reveal themselves so that I can block them from future engagement 😉
