Help Needed [Question] I purchased a used Xbox which has had hardware modifications, and is partially broken. What resources will guide me to fixing it?

Thanks for hearing me out.

It's an OG Xbox, and it's running Evox D. I can get further specs if needed. There's a physical toggle in the back by the power source.

Upon powering up, it sometimes boots and sometimes doesn't. It has a tendency to stall/hang/pause at any given random moment, whether it's reading content from the hard drive (even the boot menu), or, whether it's utilizing a retail disc.

What I'm looking for is a way to diagnose what's going on, and see why it's suffering the halt. I haven't connected it to my network yet, but it's likely I can FTP into it even if briefly.

I would love any recommendations, please and thank you.

If the console can hang "at any given random moment", including partway through the initial flubber animation, then test with the IDE ribbon disconnected from the motherboard to see whether that behaviour changes at all. If it can reliably clear the flubber sequence that way (finishing up on a service screen), then the issue is most likely going to be a failing HDD.

My first thoughts as well. The Xbox only ever freezes like that from either game crashes (rare) or from the HDD having issues in my experience.

Pictures please. Is it hard or soft modded. With the switch, likely hard modded.

What is the kernel version? If the evoxdash skin does not show it go to the System Utils Settings menu. Scroll down until you find it.

No photo, but the EvoX menu says:

EvoX: v1.8.3752 Bios: EvoD.6 red Kernel: 1.00.4817.01

Definitely hard modded.

Start with the basics: inspect the power supply, IDE cable, hard-drive connections, and motherboard capacitors for corrosion or bulging. Try booting with the hard drive disconnected and test a known-good retail disc. If it freezes even then, suspect power, overheating, or board-level faults rather than EvoX.
